What is Extraction?

is a separation process consisting of the separation of a substance from a matrix.

Extraction Methods:
Solvent extraction.
Microwave-assisted extraction.
Ultrasound-assisted extraction.
Supercritical fluid extraction.
Ionic liquids.
Enzyme-assisted extraction.
Pressurized liquid/fluid extraction.

Extraction Process:
(1) the solvent penetrates into the solid matrix;
(2) the solute dissolves in the solvents;
(3) the solute is diffused out of the solid matrix;
(4) the extracted solutes are collected.

Types of extraction:
liquid/solid,
example: Coffee and tea=
The compound ( caffeine) is isolated from a solid mixture by using a liquid
extraction solvent (water).
liquid/liquid
acid/base

Extraction Equipments:
mixer-settler extractors
extraction columns
centrifugal extraction equipment.

Solvent:
able to dissolve other substances.
Solute:
Dissolve in the solvent.
Compound:
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture.
Mixture:a substance made by mixing other substances together

What is Grinding?
Grinding is the process of breaking up particles.

Grinding equipments/materials:
Ball mill
Mortar andpestle
