OBJECTIVES:
(13) With the use of examples, students will correctly define the term ‘sentence’.
(14) Given definitions and examples, students will correctly analyse sentences into
subject and predicate.

Concept: Sentences are divided into two main parts: subject and predicate

Content
A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought.
Examples:
- Mary is crying.
- The students were engaged in a game of cricket.

Parts of a Sentence
Every sentence has two main parts: a subject and a predicate.
When analysing sentences, identify the verb first and then select the subject of the verb. The
subject of the sentence refers to who or what is spoken about. The predicate forms the rest of
the sentence with the verb.

Exercise – Parts of a Sentence
Analyse the following simple sentences into subject and predicate as shown in the examples
above.
1. The baby is shaking the rattle.
2. Place the popcorn in the microwave.
3. All passengers boarded the plane by 4:00pm.
4. The girl scored a magnificent goal.
5. The severe winds ripped roofs off houses.
6. I lit a candle during the vigil.
7. The detective investigated the scene of the crime.
8. The nomads guided their camels to another area.
9. The hunter caught a deer in the forest.
10. He lost his pencil.
11. Gabriella knows her work.
12. I met him at the fair.
13. My family enjoys vacation time.
14. We saw an oasis in the desert.
