What is a simple sentence? Give simple sentence with simple subject with simple
predicate.

Read the paragraph:


Flying Kites in the Greenfields

It was a fineyard windy Saturday. Fate, Vincent, and Vergel went on their way to
the greenfields to fly kite. Flying kites is their favorite hobby. Blacky and Browny
were looking at them seriously. Birds and dragonflies could be seen up there in the
sky. Vincent and Vergel held on their kites tightly to make them fly high in the
wind. Fate was looking on, the mountains and trees made the greenfields
refreshing.

These are sentences taken from the paragraph.


1. Fate, Vincent , and Vergel went on their way to the greenfields to fly kite.
2. Blacky and Browny were looking at them.
3. Birds and dragonflies could be seen up there in the sky.
4. Vincent and Vergel held on their kites tightly to make them fly high in the
wind.
5. The mountains and trees made the greenfields refreshing.

Our pattern for these simple sentences is


compound subject and simple predicate or
CS + SP

Remember:
1. Two or more simple subject can be joined together to form
compound subject of the sentence.
2. The simple predicate includes only one verb that tells what the
subjects did or what happened to the subjects.
3. Two or more subjects can be joined by the connective , “AND”
4. We use the Pattern CS + SP to form a complete sentence.

Exercise 1. Combine the following pairs of sentences to make one


sentence using the pattern CS +SP

1. Eggplants are fruit vegetables. Tomatoes are fruit vegetables.


2. Makopa can be grown by marcotting. Chico can be grown by marcotting.
3. The guava is a fruit –bearing tree. The mango is a fruit-bearing tree.
4. The coconut is a useful plant. The chico is a useful plant.
5. The poinsettia has no scent. The bougainvillaea has no scent.
6. Birds help propagate plants. Animals help propagate plants.
Exercise 2. a. Write three sentences about the poinsettia and the
bougainvillaea based on the following paragraph.Begin your sentence with:
The poinsettia and the bougainvillaea……

The poinsettia is an attractive plant. It has brightly colored bracts which are
sometimes mistaken for flowers. It has tiny flowers which are hidden by bracts.
The bougainvillaea is an attractive plant. It has brightly colored bracts which are

b. Use the pattern CS + SP about the things below.

using the CS + SP pattern.

Mother and Baby

After work , mother loves to cuddle and play with her cute baby boy.
This has become her routine ,since she enjoys and feels the warmth of
baby’s touch through her fingers. She sees and assures herself that there
is never dull moment with her baby. Baby smiles and giggles with
mother while playing. Mother’s touch outgrows and complete baby’s
day.

 State one complete sentence from the paragraph and write on the board.

Ex.

Remember:
a. The simple subject is the word that tells who or what the sentence
is all about.
b. The compound predicate consists of two or more verbs/verb
phrases joined by and/or.
c. We use the connector and to join compound predicates.
d. Use the pattern SS+ CP to make a simple sentence.

Exercise 1. Read the sentences and use the “T- Chart” strategy to identify
the simple subject and compound predicate;

4. Jun shut the refrigerator and left.
5. Uncle Bob holds a book and sits on his rocking chair.
Exercise 2. Underline the simple subject once and the compound predicate
twice using colored chalk:

1. The birds feed on the ripe guavas and scatter the seed all over the place.
2. The teacher calls for a homeroom P.T.A. meeting and discusses the grading
system to them.
3. The models wore elegant gowns and travel the world extensively.
4. The gardener sweeps the dry leaves and buries them.
5. We visited Merry Hospital one Sunday afternoon and brought fresh flowers to
a sick friend.

Exercise 3. Join the pair of sentences using the SS + CP pattern.

1. The fern is a flowerless plant. The fern grows most anywhere.


2. The ampalaya is an edible plant. The ampalaya needs a trellis to climb on.
3. Pechay grows from seeds. Pechay produces edible leaves.
4. The sampaguita is a fragrant flower. It is grown in any part of the Philippines.
5. Jojo worked for the future. Jojo saved for the future.
