the smallest amount of drop will occur in the event that
CRT is backed off from Top Drive. Keep in mind that less
drop equals less shock load to the safety slings.
6. When using anti-rotation arms, adjust the distance
between the anti-rotation arms and the top drive track to
the smallest amount allowable. This will limit the shock load
on the anti-rotation arms.

Key Safety Points to Remember

Any time personnel are in the immediate area of the CRT during rig up or rig down the drilling console will be tagged out and the driller will be
aware of the hazards.

Critical Lifts- Before each critical lift is made, everyone must be clear of the rig floor (except essential personnel). At no time during the critical
lift shall anyone be conducting other activities.
• Critical Lifts include but are not limited to hammers, hammer drive adapters, tongs, pipe, handling tools, etc.

Management of Change (MOC) - When a significant change occurs in operations that is not captured by a JSA, Permit or Procedures; the Job
shall be STOPPED, and the change(s) managed.

When a significant change in operations will be made involving heavy equipment and tools, a JSA must be communicated with all personnel
involved. Also:
• A visual inspection of all lifting devices, lifting points (padeyes, etc.) and welds associated with the lift must be conducted.
• All non-essential personnel must be clear of the rig floor.
• Drillers DO’s & DON’T’s

Stop Work Authority - All employees and contractors have the authority and obligation to stop any task or operation where concerns or
questions exist about the safety of yourself or someone else.
➢ No work will resume until all stop work issues and concerns have been adequately addressed.
➢ All Stopped Jobs need to be properly documented to why the job was stopped and what step(s) were taken to continue safely or
control the hazard/condition.

Regardless how long or short is the tasks, apply step 7 process, starting work is not Step 1

Additional Key Points

IMPORTANT: CRT OPERATIONS PRESENT A UNIQUE HAZARD WHERE PIPE IS GRIPPED BY BOTH THE CRT AND SPIDER. THERE IS THE
OPPORTUNITY TO OPEN THE ELEVATOR OR SPIDER BEFORE THE JOINT IS MADE UP TO THE STRING, WHICH MAY RESULT IN A DROPPED JOINT
OR DROPPED STRING.

Warning: If CRT is used to back out a joint (i.e. turning in the “Left” direction) or a power tong is being used to make up a connection below a
CRT and the rotating pipe engages the CRT or part of the CRT during makeup; The threat exists for the right handed rotary shoulder
connections on the Top Drive or CRT to be backed off. Visually inspect connection makeup reference line on all rotary shoulder connections,
“Before the job”, “backing out connections” or “after an event occurs that could compromise the integrity of any rotary shoulder connection”
and as “often as necessary to ensure that all rotary connections are not backed off”.
Ensure retaining devices such as key rings, cotter pins, safety cables, lock nuts, etc., are in good working condition and properly installed. ie:
A cotter pin shall be properly installed to prevent backing out or becoming pulled out during operations.

Key Rings (when allowed) may be used in place of cotter pins when the retainer device is required to be removed multiple times during
certain tasks. A key ring shall be fully installed inside the retainer hole with the rings fully retracted and closed.

Should the contractor or operator have site specific rules in place for certain retainer devices, we will abide by their policy. ie: No cotter pins,
or no key rings allowed.
