Chapter 2

METHOD

Presented in this chapter are the discussions on the research design,

the research locale, the population and sample, the research instrument, the
data collection and the statistical tools.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers employed a descriptive correlational

research design. The data will be collected using questionnaires as the
primary tools for assessing the influence of listening to music on the academic
performance of New Corella National High School students.

Descriptive research aims to accurately and systematically describe a

population, situation, or phenomenon. It can answer what, where, when, and
how questions, but not why questions. Its primary aim is impartial observation,
thorough description, and meticulous documentation of the various
characteristics and attributes related to the subject being investigated. This
methodological approach avoids the use of any form of influence or
manipulation, allowing researchers to obtain a broad and accurate portrayal of
the topic under scrutiny (Shona McCombes, 2019). Descriptive correlational
research is a type of research design that tries to explain the relationship
between two or more variables without making any claims about cause and
effect. It includes collecting and analyzing data on at least two variables to
see if there is a link between them (Bhandari, 2023).
Research Locale

This study is to be conducted at New Corella National High School,

located in Purok 4, Poblacion, New Corella, Davao del Norte, which will serve
as the primary setting for data collection by the researchers.

The questionnaire on the Harmonic Influence of Music and the Impact

to the Academic Performance will be evaluated by the participants of New
Corella National High School.

Research Subject

The sample size for this study is according to Thomas (2022),

purposive sampling technique/method, is the deliberate choice of a
respondents possess. It is a nonrandom technique that does not need
underlying theories or a set of number of participant. Simply put, the
researcher decides what needs to be known and sets out to find people who
can and are willing to provide the information by virtue of knowledge.

Research Instrument

This study uses questionnaires constructed by the researchers. These

will be validated by the research panel. The first tool was the questionnaire
designed to elicit the responses on the harmonic influence of music. The
second tool is used to determine the Academic Performance in New Corella
National High School.

The respondents will answer these questions using the following 5-

point likert scale:

Range of Means Description Interpretation

4.20 – 5.00 Strongly Agree This means that the Influence of music on
academic performance is very high.

3.40 – 4.19 Agree This means that the Influence of music on

academic performance is high.

2.60 – 3.39 Neutral This means that the Influence of music on

academic performance is moderate.

1.80 – 2.59 Disagree This means that the Influence of music on

academic performance is low.

1.00 – 1.79 Strongly This means that the Influence of music on

Disagree academic performance is very low.
For the Academic Performance, the following rating scale will be utilized:

Range of
Description Interpretation
Means
This means that the Influence of music on
96-100 Excellent
academic performance is very high.
This means that the Influence of music on
91-95 Very Satisfactory
academic performance is high.
This means that the Influence of music on
86-90 Satisfactory
academic performance is moderate.
Needs This means that the Influence of music on
81-85
Improvement academic performance is low.
This means that the Influence of music on
80 below Unsatisfactory
academic performance is very low.

Data Collection

Following the approval of the proposed study by the thesis committee,

the researchers created two sets of items for the data-gathering tools based
on the existing literature regarding the harmonic influence of music and its
impact on academic performance. Subsequently, the initial draft of the survey
instruments underwent review and approval from the thesis adviser. Once this
checking process was completed, the instruments were finalized and
submitted to the panel of examiners for validation, incorporating all their
suggestions into the questionnaires. The researcher obtained permission from
the school principal in the chosen area to conduct the study. Following this,
the survey instruments and data gathering tools were distributed to the study's
respondents. Prior to the students answering the questionnaires, the
researchers provided explanations for each item in vernacular language. The
researcher personally collected the completed questionnaires, which were
then compiled and analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. Finally, the
findings were interpreted and analyzed.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The gathered data was tabulated and analyzed using the following
statistical tools:

Mean. This was utilized to determine the Harmonic influence of Music on

academic performance.

Correlation. This was employed to determine the significant relationship

between the Harmonic Influence of Music and academic performance

Linear Regression Analysis. This was used to see the predictability level of
one dependent variable and one or more independent variables.
