Technology has been a great help in a lot of things in life. In the field of parenting, it has been

significantly impacted by it. With a variety of tools, resources, and challenges available to parents

today, technology has completely changed how parents manage the process of raising children.

However, despite its potential benefits, technology in parenting brings forth numerous negative

consequences for both parents and their children, demanding careful consideration based on our

gathered data. The question that this research aims to answer is “How does technology affect parenting

and how to integrate it in parenting while minimizing the potential negative effects of it?” To be able

to gather the data that the researchers need, they interviewed participants that met the criteria which

are parents that let their children under 10 years old use technology using semi-structured interview.

The result of this research concludes that parents let their children use technology because of its

benefits on their children’s education and their safety as well as to occupy their children for them to be

able to focus in their other duties. This study wanted to raise awareness of the use of technology on

children and that parents must not rely on technology for their children because it have a detrimental

effect on them based on out study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND ITS PROBLEM)

INTRODUCTION

Technology has a great impact on how people relate to one another on a regular basis and in

society. Communication, education, and the thought processes of people are all impacted by

technology (Allen, 2019). It makes things interesting and easier, especially for parents. However,

parenting in the digital age has now become more challenging than ever before because of the benefits

and drawbacks that technology provides for parenting and general wellbeing that must not be ignored

(Pietrangelo, 2019). Parenting is mentally and emotionally taxing, and it frequently necessitates

substantial financial hardship and personal sacrifices (Association for Psychological Science, 2011).

As the world enters the technological age, parents must control their own use of the internet and

mobile devices, as well as their kids’ utilization of and access to the same technology, to maintain a

balance (Auxier et. al., 2020). One benefit of technology in parenting is that parents can regulate their

children's internet use on all of their devices by using mobile applications to limit when and how much

time they spend online. Their kids will pick up good technology usage habits from them. Conditioning

youngsters to know when and how to limit their screen time leads to a balanced online diet for kids

(Mikell, 2022). Nevertheless, this is still really difficult for most parents, especially those who have

just started being parents. As a result, some parents hire nannies to babysit their children, while others

use the new, modern type of babysitter, the "Technological Nanny".

Page 1
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
According to Vulic (2020), the phrase "tech nanny" refers to a parenting style in which parents

utilize technology to entertain their kids, such as cellphones, tablets, and iPads, so they can attend to

their other duties. However, other parents have their own reasons for letting their children access

technology at a young age. Based on the survey conducted by Auxier ET. al. (2020), in addition to

providing entertainment, parents believe that technology aids in their children's education since it is

easier to access, particularly when it comes to engaging videos on the internet that introduce them to

various cultures. Moreover, for parents who lack confidence in their parenting skills and have limited

support from their partners, technology is being used to provide their presence and information about

taking care of their own children (Nikken, 2019). Aside from that, based on the study of

Mallawaarachchi ET. al. (2022), social norms play a significant role in shaping parents' attitudes and

behaviors around the use of technology as a babysitter. When parents perceive that the use of

technology as a babysitter is common and accepted within their social circles, they are more likely to

use it themselves. Furthermore, many parents today have busy work schedules and social lives, which

can make it difficult to spend enough time with their children. As a result, parents turn to technology

as a convenient way to keep their children occupied while they attend to their other responsibilities

(Gushée, 2023). On top of that, the digital play market has become increasingly commercialized, with

companies using a variety of marketing strategies to promote their products to parents, including

claims about educational benefits, positive developmental outcomes, and interactive play experiences,

which can make parents, feel more comfortable using technology as a babysitter (Marsh & Bishop,

2018).

In addition, parents use technology to calm their children when they throw tantrums, which

greatly relieves them of so much stress. They noticed that when they permitted their kids to use

gadgets, their kids became more compliant and peaceful (Mostafavi, 2016). However, this can also

Page 2
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
make children dependent and obsessed with technology, resulting in negative behavior and reduced

interactions with their parents (Dashevsky, 2014). On the other hand, some parents expose their kids to

technology at a young age in order to prepare them for their future careers and for the future when

technology becomes more prevalent (Laditan, 2013). Unfortunately, some parents are not aware of the

possible risks associated with too much screen usage by their children (Radesky & Christakis, 2016).

1.1 Effects of Tech Nanny on Children’s Development 1

There’s much more to learn about technological nanny, including the benefits and downsides it

may bring to its users. Children as young as two are able to use technologies such as television and

mobile gadgets, and allowing this to continue will have unfavorable effects on the kids (Ortiz, 2018).

Based on the study of Radesky (2022), the technologies those children use might lead them to miss out

on a lot of opportunities that carry what children need for developing self-regulation. There are a lot of

dangers associated with letting kids browse the internet and use gadgets. One of these consequences is

concern for security. Youngsters don't always understand the concept of security, and they are more

likely to become targets of criminals. According to Sadowski (2012), cybersecurity is an important

factor that can have a major impact on children because criminals can also use gadgets and the internet

to harass them. It is also challenging for parents with demanding schedules to closely monitor their

children's use of technology. Children may thus be exposed to a variety of online material, including

incorrect or unreliable information (Woda, 2019). Due to the lack of guidance and supervision,

children may also be more prone to trusting anything they read online without questioning its validity

or credibility (Cyberwise, 2021). They can also be exposed to unsuitable content and interact with

dishonest people online (Capriola, 2019). Moreover, the overuse of technology can cause children to

have issues with face-to-face social interaction and mental stability, as well as physical problems

(Sadowski, 2012).

Page 3
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Children's social skills may not be properly developing due to the rising usage of technology.

As a result, there is an increase in the number of kids who develop lower self-esteem, become

introverted and awkward, and have the potential to lack interpersonal skills (Necthem, 2021). Besides

their social development, excessive use of technology among children can lead to serious health

problems. Early childhood habits establish the groundwork for the development of lifestyle patterns,

such as eating habits, physical activity levels, and screen time (Mallawaarachchi et. al., 2022).

Spending extended periods of time on phones, video games, or watching TV reduces physical activity,

increases sedentary behavior, and develops bad habits that result in children’s obesity, poor posture,

and even eye strain (Simms, 2022). Children's development is absolutely important to polish from a

young age, but because most children are becoming more technologically dependent, they have fewer

opportunities to practice developing those skills (Organization for Economic Co-operation and

Development, 2019). Also, due to their ongoing exposure to constant stimulation from digital devices,

children tend to have short attention spans. Their short attention span and lack of concentration have a

significant impact on their academic performances (Oaten, 2022). Additionally, a child's mood can be

significantly impacted by the sleep disruption caused by too much screen usage. As a result, they

spend less time being creative or active and get less exercise, which increases their risk of developing

emotional and physical problems (Kowalski, 2016). These are the reasons why specialists are advising

parents to stop relying on technology to babysit their children (Veloso, 2017).

1.2 Effects of Technology as a new Obsession of Children 2

Children who grow up surrounded by technology run the risk of becoming overly dependent on

it and developing an obsession with using it. Parents must limit their children’s usage of technology;

however, when their children become angry or sad, they will give them gadgets to soothe them.

Unfortunately, allowing them to spend time on their screens as a form of comfort won't teach them

Page 4
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
how to handle those emotions in a healthy way. In fact, it may lead to a dependence on or habitual use

of technology (Rumpf, 2013). Based on the study of Hazelden (2023), technology dependence will

lead to possible addiction. Being overly obsessed with technology, they tend to think rashly, which

could have unfavorable effects. Their obsession may even impair their problem-solving abilities,

leading them to rely solely on technology rather than employing their own abilities to come up with a

solution (Nechtem, 2021). Also, one of the effects of being overly dependent on technology is being

tense, unable to unwind, and having trouble falling asleep (Youlden, 2019). Most worryingly, they

lose interest in their own favorite pastimes and other interests (Frey, 2021).

1.3 Benefits of Tech Nanny to Children and Parents

Despite the fact that technology can have detrimental effects on kids who are exposed to it, if

used properly, it can still be beneficial to them. Particularly to parents who have children with autism

or other medical conditions. It can improve communication for a child with a medical condition who

has trouble speaking or is unable to talk at all (Campbell, 2016). They would be able to learn properly

and interact with their peers and teacher more effectively. As such, technology has been a very good

tool used for education by the school and parents (Dixit, 2022). According to Adhikari (2022), for

children, gadgets promote enhanced and advanced learning experiences. It helps them to enhance their

skills and even learn a basic skill because of the video that they watched. Also, it allows them to

explore their topics of interest. Technology gives them an unlimited source for expressing their ideas

and develops their creativity (Kolber, 2018). Not only that, but according to Emini (2023), when

children are exposed online, they can be encouraged by others to think maturely, like respecting other

cultures and accepting things that are different from them.

1.4 Technological Nanny as a form of Monitoring

Page 5
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
When talking about technology, it does not only include mobile phones and gadgets. The use

of technology, such as cameras, to monitor the children is actually helpful, especially if the parents are

not by their side. And by doing so, parents make sure of their child's security (Jargon, 2016). With a

short phone text, parents and kids can check in on each other throughout the day. Knowing where the

children are at all times and knowing that they can be reached immediately in an emergency gives

parents peace of mind (Ana, 2015). One of the reasons parents let their children play with gadgets is

because they believe it is much safer to do so. In some cases, digital devices can provide a safe and

controlled environment for children to play and explore, particularly when compared to unsupervised

outdoor play or other activities (Sundus, 2017). Some digital media products and apps allow children

to interact with others and make new friends in a virtual space, which can help improve their social

skills, strengthen their mental health, and provide a platform for expressing themselves (Gordon,

2022).

Technology has already spread its influence to different parts of the world. Additionally, many

kids under the age of 12 have already been exposed to various kinds of technology (Pew Research

Center, 2020). Although parents use technology to nanny their children, there are still numerous

concerns that arise from parents whenever they let their children use gadgets. The genuine problem,

though, is that as kids spend more time on their devices, family interactions and communication are

being left behind (Gushée, 2023). Despite the fact that both parents and kids use technology for

entertainment and relaxation, it is still necessary for the both of them to spend time together, which

helps strengthen personal connection and foster empathy towards each other's concerns and to other

people (Singh, 2023).

Tech nanny is an issue that needs further awareness among people, especially parents. Children

need the care and guidance of a human being. Several parents have said that once their children spend

Page 6
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
a significant amount of time using a smartphone or tablet, they notice behavioral issues in their kids

(Hefferman, 2015). According to Ceder (2020), technology cannot give the attention, guidance, and

security that a parent can give to their children. Children do not understand properly how they can

affect other people. Positive guidance and discipline are essential for kids because they encourage self-

control, educate responsibility, and aid in the development of deliberate decision-making (Fletcher,

2023).

Thus, the difference between a tech nanny and a parent is fundamental to the development of

the child’s character, beliefs, and behavior (Vulic, 2020). Tech nanny is not only a problem of the

technology but also of how the user uses it. Although there are a lot of studies about the effect of

technology on children, not much can be found about the technological nanny that greatly affects the

future development of children. As the world becomes more technological, parenting too will be much

different (Aggarwal, 2019).

1.5 Synthesis and Rationale

This study aims to understand the potential risk and benefits associated with using technology

as a babysitter through the observation and experiences of their parents.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Here are the questions this study aims to answer:

1. What are the factors that lead parents to rely on technology as a method of supervision for their

children?

2. What are the benefits of using technology as a babysitter for their children’s development?

3. What are the drawbacks of using technology as a babysitter for their children’s development?

Page 7
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
4. What are the implications of this study to the field of ICT?

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Theories and concepts for children’s engagement with digital technologies

A theory of Stoilova (2020), the field of knowledge related to children's online risks, safety,

and the impact of technological changes on children and youth is highly multidisciplinary. This means

that understanding these topics requires insights and expertise from various disciplines, such as

psychology, sociology, education, and technology. In summary, the theory emphasizes that the study

of children's online risks, safety, and the impact of technology on youth requires a multidisciplinary

approach, offering both advantages in terms of a broader knowledge base, but also challenges in terms

of integrating diverse findings and concepts from different disciplines. This theory assist in identifying

and addressing potential dangers and security issues related to the use of technology in parenting for

children. Through it deeper comprehension on the online risk of children being expose to technology,

this theory's use can aid in addressing the complicated issues and opportunities brought on by

technological nanny, ultimately encouraging their responsible and advantageous use for kids and

families.

Page 8
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

After all the

study. Technology in parenting is said to have both advantages and disadvantages on parents and their

children. The researchers have found that children’s education and safety benefited and can be

monitored if they use technology. It is also one of the main reasons why parents use technology in

their children. However, it also has drawbacks on their physical, social, and psychological well-being.

Overall, to be able to integrate technology on parenting while minimizing the potential drawbacks of

it, the researchers found that parents must raise their awareness about technology as well as limit and

discipline their children on the effects and use of technology on them.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

As this age group is thought to be the most vulnerable to the possible effects of using

technology as a nanny, the researchers delimited the study to parents who had kids under 10 years old

in the area of Dasmariñas, Cavite. To maintain the specificity of the research aims, children older than

10 were not be included in this study. This study focuses on the possible impacts of technology as a

Page 9
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
babysitter on the growth of young children. The researchers did not consider the socio-economic status

of the families using technology as a babysitter and only focused on the experiences of the children

and their parents' usage of technology. This study recognizes that parents make important choices

about how to raise their kids and whether to use technology as a nanny. This study does not, however,

seek to impose any particular viewpoint on parents regarding the usage of technology. The opinions

and decisions of parents were respected and considered in the interpretation of the results.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study could raise awareness among parents about the potential risks and benefits associated

with using technology as a babysitter. Secondly, it could contribute to the academic literature on the

impact of technology on child development and well-being. Additionally, this study could contribute

to a better understanding of the complex relationship between children, parents, and technology in the

modern world. Therefore, there are several potential groups of people that could benefit from research

on technological nanny, including:

Parents. Parents may make more informed decisions about their children's gadget usage, how and

when to introduce technology to their children, and how to reduce any potential bad impacts by being

aware of the risks and advantages of using technology as a babysitter.

Educators. Learning about the benefits and cons of using technology as a babysitter can also assist

educators in developing rules and regulations for utilizing technology in the classroom and educating

kids on how technology impacts them.

Pediatricians. This research can help healthcare professionals about risks associated with young

children's excessive screen use. This research can be particularly useful in developing programs that

motivate kids, their families, and other people to use media properly.

Page 10
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Children. By enhancing their comprehension of the benefits and drawbacks of using technology, it

can also help kids develop positive online habits. Children can also learn how to use technology safely

and ethically as well as how it can be used in educational contexts.

Technology companies and developers. This study can help technology businesses and developers

by providing them with important advice on how to make more age-appropriate and practical digital

material for young children.

Future researchers. This study provides a foundation for further exploration and study in the field of

child development and technology. Future researchers may use it to investigate how technology affects

early childhood development and to identify any potential areas of concern. Additionally, it might

provide light on the most effective and secure ways that technology might enhance children's learning

and development.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

To be able to guarantee that the research is carried out with rigor and transparency and that the

findings are accurate, legitimate, and trustworthy, this chapter discusses the research design,

participants of the study, instrumentation, data gathering procedures, and data analysis for the research

about technological nanny.

RESEARCH DESIGN

A research design refers to the gathering of crucial data through the application of specific

research methods. In simpler terms, it involves compiling information or data by formulating a

hypothesis and systematically deriving significant findings (Team Leverage Edu, 2023). And the

research design that the researchers applied in this study is phenomenology. Phenomenology is an

approach to research that proves particularly beneficial when delving into the depths of the audience's

thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This research design serves as a valuable tool for gaining

profound insights into the audience's perspective, raising awareness about the subject of study, and

cultivating new theories surrounding the audience's encounters within a specific, controlled setting

(Gerind, 2023).

Phenomenology is to delve into the subjective realities of individuals and gain insight into their

lived experiences and emotions. That’s why the researchers employed a phenomenological approach

in their research. The focus was on capturing the essence of the phenomenon through the narratives

provided by participants. By embracing their unique perspectives, the researchers can create in-depth

descriptions that illuminated the intricate nature of the phenomenon under study. Phenomenology

Page 14
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
allowed the researchers to go beyond surface-level observations and uncover the underlying meanings

and significance attributed to the phenomenon by those who have experienced it firsthand.

PARTICIPANTS OF THE STUDY

The researchers used a non-probability sampling technique called "Purposive Sampling".

Purposive sampling includes selecting individuals who meet specified criteria that are relevant to the

research or objective of the study (Hassan, 2022). This sampling technique is also known as

judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling. The goal of using purposive sampling in research is to

choose participants with particular experiences that are significant to the study (Crossman, 2020).

To collect the necessary data for the research, this study needs a certain set of participants who

provided the necessary data for the research. Hence, the researcher used the purposive sampling

technique since it is a time-efficient sampling method that benefited the study. Also, the researchers

provided certain criteria for selecting participants. The number of participants was around 10–20. The

researchers looked for participants who met the criteria and asked their consent.

For identifying the participants of the study, the following criteria were taken in consideration:

 Parents that lived in General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite.

 Parents who had kids that uses technology.

 Parents who had kids under 10 years old.

INSTRUMENTATION

Instrumentation is the process of constructing research instruments that could be used

appropriately in gathering data for the study. The questionnaire, interview, and observation are the

most commonly used tools for gathering data (Bitonio, 2014). Interviews are most effective for

Page 15
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
qualitative research because they can help the researchers better understand and explore the research

subjects' opinions, behaviors, experiences, and phenomena (DeBose, 2015). According to George

(2022), there are several types of interviews, often differentiated by their level of structure. Each

structure has its own elements; however, the researchers used the semi-structured interview because it

is more beneficial for the research. A semi-structured interview is a type of interview that has some

questions or topics planned in advance but also allows for flexibility and spontaneity in asking other

questions. It is a combination of structured and unstructured interview styles that can offer the benefits

of both. Lastly, the researchers asked open-ended questions to the participants so that in-depth

information were collected (Stolle et. al., 2022).

The data collection instrument that the researchers used was an interview guide where all the

questions were written. It is for ensuring that the interview is orderly, comprehensive, and consistent

across interviews and enhancing the comparability of data between participants. Another instrument

that the researcher used was a recording device to ensure that the participant's comments were

precisely recorded so that they can be thoroughly reviewed and studied after the interview.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers aim to understand the effects of technology on both parents and children’s

lives. To be able to find the right information, the researchers looked for participants who met the

given criteria. The researchers provided a waiver for the participants in the study.

Using the prepared research questions, the researchers gathered information from the

participants. The researchers conducted a semi-structured interview with the aid of an audio recording.

For thorough and comprehensive information, experts and witnesses were also interviewed. It was for

the benefit of the researchers as well as the participants, in order to provide them with more

Page 16
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
information and a more thorough analysis. After the data is collected, the researchers analyzed the

information given by the participants, professionals, and witnesses to further expand the research.

Lastly, to be able to answer the research questions, the researchers drew a conclusion using the

gathered data.

DATA ANALYSIS

Data analysis is the process of systematically applying statistical and/or logical techniques to

describe and illustrate, condense and recap, and evaluate data. This study used triangulation as the data

analysis tool for qualitative data.

A. Triangulation

Triangulation refers to the use of multiple methods or data sources in qualitative research to

develop a comprehensive understanding of phenomena (Bhandari 2022). Triangulation has also been

viewed as a qualitative research strategy to test validity through the convergence of information from

different sources. According to Denzin (2016), in addition to validation, triangulation aims to broaden

and enhance understanding about a certain topic. It can be used to produce innovation in conceptual

framing. It might result in multiple meta-interpretations. By examining human behavior from multiple

angles, triangulation aims to map out or completely explain its variety and complexity (Cohen &

Manio, 2020). Therefore, the researchers consulted with expert in childcare and development, such as

pediatricians and teachers, to further deepen the understanding of the researchers about the

technological nanny.

Page 17
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade

B. Thematic Analysis

The examination of patterns in order to clarify meaning is known as thematic analysis. To put it in

another way, it involves analyzing the trends and themes contained in the data collected to determine

the underlying significance and make a conclusion out of it (Crosley, 2021). According to Caulfield

(2019), when analyzing a collection of qualitative data, such as interview transcripts, social media

profiles, or survey results, thematic analysis is a useful method for learning more about people's

beliefs, knowledge, experiences, or values.

CHAPTER III

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In this chapter, the researchers had conducted a semi-structured interview on participants that

met the criteria needed for the research. The followings were the findings based on the answers of the

participants that the researchers interviewed.

Research Question no. 1: What are the factors that lead parents to rely on technology as a

method of supervision for their children?

“…hindi ko maasikaso ng maayos yung anak ko tuwing umaga kasi busy sa work kaya ano...

pinapagamit ko sila ng cellphone para naman tumahimik at may malaro.”

- Parent 10

“...Mas nakakapagpokus ako sa ginagawa ko kase natatahimik lang sila sa isang tabi.”

- Parent 4

“…maaliw ang anak naming habang abala kami sa trabaho…”

- Parent 2

Parent 10, Parent 2 and Parent 4 have stated that work make it difficult for them to spend

enough time with their children, as a result, they tend to rely on technology to keep their children

occupied. Mostafavi (2016) has justified that kids became more compliant and peaceful when they use

gadget that entertain them or occupied their time.

Page 19
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
"Meron naman, tulad na lang din na kapag busy ang parents, papagamit nila ng technology na

sobrang popular ngayon, upang ang mga parents eh may time to do their jobs."

- Nurse 3

Nurse 3 stated that when parents have busy schedules and need to prioritize their work

responsibilities, they may turn to technology as a solution. Parents can use technology to handle their

responsibilities more effectively while freeing up time for their jobs. This style of parenting allows a

balance between their work and children.

Research Question no. 2: What are the benefits of using technology for their children?

“…para sa kanilang pag-aaral. Need kasi nila non pangsearch kaya ayon, ayon lagi pinapagamit

ko sa kanila.”

- Parent 9

“Mabilis silang natututo…”

- Parent 2

“…pinapanood ko nga sila ng mga video na pambata para matuto sila mag-english.”

- Parent 1

"Ah ano d’yan din kase kame kumukuha ng information tungkol sa school ganon…"

- Parent 6

Page 20
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Parent 9, Parent 2, Parent 6, and Parent 1 have stated that because technology can help their

children with their school activities, they let them have access on them. Mittha (2021) justified that

technology can bring many benefits on children when it comes to their school activities because it

provides children with access to a vast amount of information and educational resources.

"…ang natutunan nila at nakuha nila sa internet ay talagang very informative at makakapag bago

ng kanilang ways."

- Teacher 1

“…walang kahirap hirap silang mag ano magsasaliksik dahil punta lamang sila don sa google.”

- Teacher 2

Teacher 1 and Teacher 2 stated that technology made students life easier because of some

online source where they can get the answers that they need.

“…madali ko malaman kung saan ‘yung anak ko.”

- Parent 9

“…maaring makausap sila through video call.”

- Parent 2

"Kapag wala sila mabalis silang matatawagan…"

- Parent 6

Page 21
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Parent 9, Parent 2, and Parent 6 had stated that it is safer for their children to have technology

because they will have access to their children’s location if they are away from them or for

communicating with each other. Wrablewski (2015) justified that with a short phone text, parents and

kids can check in on each other throughout the day. Knowing where the children are at all times and

knowing that they can be reached immediately in an emergency gives parents peace of mind. /

Research Question no. 3: What are the drawbacks of using technology for their children?

“Tsaka sa school din pala, napapansin ko lang ahh, ano, doon na talaga sila laging nalapit sa

mga cellphone nila at internet…”

- Parent 1

Parent 1 stated that although technology has greatly helped her child in their education, she

also notice that they are being dependent on it. Kaspersky (2016) justified that being overly dependent

on technology for children’s education has negative effect on their behavior at school, hinder

children's ability to think critically, problem-solve, and engage in face-to-face interactions.

"…dedepend na lang sila ng mag dedepend sa technology…"

- Teacher 1

"…pagawin mo lang ng isang sentence, sentence ng nga lang hahanapin pa ang cellphone para

mag hanap ng translator…"

- Teacher 1

Page 22
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Teacher 1 stated that by being technology dependent, students are losing their originality and

just prefer to look information in technology instead of using their mind. They won’t learn properly if

they continue to depend on technology for their education.

“…nanlalabo na ang kaniyang paningin kakapuyat sa gadget niya.”

- Parent 10

“…minsan nasosobrahan na sila sa gamit so yung mata talaga unang unang naaapektuan.”

- Parent 8

Parent 10 and Parent 8 have stated that because of too much exposure of their children on

gadget, they noticed that their children’s vision got badly affected. Simms (2022) justified that

spending extended periods of time on phones, video games, or watching TV result in children’s

obesity, poor posture, eye strain, and even blurry vision.

“…sa mga batang gumagamit ng digital na screen at ipinikit ang kanilang mga mata ay maaaring

magkaroon ng kondisyong tinatawag na myopia, o nearsightedness.”

- Nurse 1

“…makakaapekto eto sa bata ng nearsightedness tsaka visual blurry sa paraang ano too much

using gadget o too much staying on the screen can cause bad effect on the eyes."

- Nurse 2

Page 23
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Nurse 1 and 2 stated that excessive use of gadgets can cause an eye disease called myopia or

nearsightedness in a child who uses too much gadgets. Excessive exposure to the lights of the screen

can also cause visual blurry.

“…nag-iiba ugali haha kaya ayoko din na pagamitin siya eh.”

- Parent 7

"…’yung mga napapanood nila minsan sa mga website ginagaya nila."

- Parent 5

“…yung mga mura na natutunan niyang magsalita ganon.”

- Parent 2

Parents 7, Parent 2, and Parent 5 have stated that their children imitate what they watch and see

on websites. Capriole (2019) justified that children can also be exposed to unsuitable content and

interacts with dishonest people online as well as copying what they see on the internet without

questioning its validity or credibility.

“…sa kanilang mental health naman dahil sa mga napapanood nila sa social media minsan

kinokopya nila ito at kung ano anong nakikita nila don…”

- Nurse 3

Nurse 3 stated that children’s mental health is impacted by the content they consume on social

media. They may be influenced by what they see, leading them to imitate or mimic certain behaviors

Page 24
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
they encounter online. This can have implications for their mental well-being as they try to emulate

and incorporate what they perceive through social media into their own lives.

“…sa sobrang busy kakagamit ng tablet nakakalimutan niya na ang ibang gawaing bahay.”

- Parent 9

“…hindi na sila active sa pagtulong sa bahay minsan paggising pa lang ano, nasa cellphone na

sila agad.”

- Parent 8

Parent 8 and Parent 9 have stated that their children forget to do other things because they were

too invested and focused on their gadgets.

“…nahihirapan na silang makatapos ng isang gawain, tulad ng gawaing bahay or takdang aralin,

nagiging emotionally unstable…”

- Nurse 1

Nurse 1 stated that because of technology, children are facing difficulties in completing tasks,

such as household chores or assigned work, and are experiencing emotional instability. It is because

they are too attached on their gadgets.

Page 25
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
“…simula nung nagkaroon na siya ng gadget na ‘yan madalang na lang siya makipag-usap.

Ano… umiiwas na rin siya sa ibang tao.”

- Parent 10

Parent 10 had noticed that technology has a detrimental effect on their child’s social

development because before, Parent 10’s child was active with interacting to others. Charles (2021)

justified that because children spends a lot of time with their gadget, they will and can develop lower

self-esteem, become introverted and awkward, and have the potential to lack interpersonal skills.

“…sa kanilang social development naman po, yung iba nagiging anti-social kase mas gusto nila

mag gadget kesa makisalamuha sa ibang tao."

- Nurse 3

“…sa social develpment naman nag cacause ito ng pag kawala ng ganang makihalubilo sa iba."

- Nurse 2

Nurse 3 and Nurse 2 have stated that due to technology, children can lose interest with social

interaction to other people which can negatively affect their ability to make friends and can also affect

their mental health.

“Nagtatrantum na siya minsan pagkinukuha ‘yung phone…”

- Parent 2

Page 26
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Parent 2 had stated that she noticed how her child threw tantrums because she took her child’s

gadget away from her child. Petersen (2020) justified that young children lack the emotional self-

control necessary to consistently make the change without freaking out.

“…naiimpluwensyahan ng gadgets ang ugali ng bata hanggang sa pag laki nito, at may

posibilidad na habang lumalaki ang bata mas dumedepende ito sa gadget na maaaring maging

dahilan ng pag tatantrum nito kapag kinuhaan mo siya ng gadget.”

- Nurse 1

“…at nababawasan ang self-control ng isang bata na madalas gumamit ng gadgets."

- Nurse 1

Nurse 1 have justified that children that use technology at an early age can develop dependence

on technology which also cause their behavior and attitude to change. Tantrums and other excessive

behavior can be the sign of them being dependent on technology.

Research Question no. 4: What are the implications of this study in the field of ICT?

The advantages and drawbacks of technology in parenting were explored in this thematic

analysis through the interviews with parents that have children that use technology. The results of the

interview based on the parent’s observation regarding their children’s use of technology, provided

insight into the questions that this research needed.

The first theme is “Advantages of technology in Parenting” which highlighted the benefits of

technology on parenting for both the parents and their children. Based on the findings, there are two

subthemes under the advantages which are Education and Safety. The technology has greatly helped

the children with their education to become independent learners and a convenient tool that make it

easier for children when it comes to their school activities. The second sub-theme is about their

Page 28
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
children’s safety. It reveals that due to the practical use of technology, they will be able to contact their

children anytime and speak with them if they are away from each other. Parents may rest easy

knowing where their kids are at all times and that they can be reached right away in case of an

emergency.

The second theme, “Drawbacks of technology in Parenting” is about the challenges and

negative effect of technology on children based on their parent’s observation. The first sub-theme is

Physical Health. It delves into the physical discomfort that the children encountered because of using

technology. Parents can't always keep an eye on how their kids use technology, and kids can't always

control how much they use it. This has an impact on their physical health, particularly their eyes.

Based on the findings, most parents have noticed that technology negatively affected their children’s

eye causing a blurry vision, and even caused them to sleep late at night.

The second sub-theme would be the negative effects of technology in children’s social

development and interaction with other people. This sub-theme explores the detrimental impact of

their children excessive use of technology in their social life and development. The findings showed

that kids who were exposed to technology ceased interacting with others and even avoided them.

Psychological sub-theme delves into the negative effects of technology in children’s behavior

and the influence of it on them. Children simply copy what they see online, and they don't even

consider if it's good or negative. The findings suggest that technology may potentially have an impact

on their attitude.

The analysis also explores the reasons why parents use technology as a nanny for their

children. The two reasons of them are for entertainment and time management. According to the

findings, parents find it challenging g to spend enough time with their kids because of jobs, therefore

Page 29
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
they frequently turn to technology to occupy and entertain them. The two sub-themes are closely

related, because parents entertain their children for them to be able to have enough time to do their

other duties and manage their time properly. It is a strategy employed by the parents to assist them

with parenting.

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

In this section, a concise overview of the research study is provided. It includes a recap of the

research objectives, methodology, and key points discussed in the previous chapters as well as a

detailed analysis and interpretation of the data collected during the research process. Also, practical

suggestions or recommendations are made based on the findings and conclusions.

SUMMARY

Technology’s role in society and people has grown prominently in the modern era, even taking

on the job of a nanny for children. With the advancements in digital devices and applications,

technology has the potential to assist parents in various aspects of child care. A modern parenting style

that refers to the concept of using technology, such as digital devices, apps, and smart home systems,

to assist in childcare and parenting tasks is called "Technological Nanny". A technological nanny

encompasses a range of technologies designed to support parents in various aspects of child care,

including monitoring, education, safety, and entertainment. Technology can bring many benefits to

children when it comes to their education because it provides them with access to a vast amount of

information and educational resources. Furthermore, many parents today have busy work schedules

and social lives; as a result, they turn to technology as a convenient way to keep their children

occupied while they attend to their other responsibilities. However, as much as it is beneficial to

children and parents, there are still a lot of dangers associated with letting kids browse the internet and

use gadgets. Youngsters don't always understand the concept of security, and they are more likely to

become targets of criminals if not monitored properly. Most importantly, children’s development will

be affected if they are exposed to technology at an early age. Children's social skills may not be

properly developing if they are constantly glued to their gadgets and have no time to interact with

other people or even with their family. Besides their social development, excessive use of technology

among children can lead to serious health problems such as eye strain, obesity, poor posture, and bad

habits. Additionally, children who grow up surrounded by technology run the risk of becoming overly

dependent on it and developing an obsession with using it. However, it's crucial to maintain a balance

and utilize technology sensibly; making sure that it enhances rather than replaces human interaction.

Page 31
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
Therefore, this study aims to understand the potential risks and benefits associated with using

technology as a babysitter through the observation and experiences of their parents.

To be able to do that, the researchers conducted an interview with specific participants who

met the criteria. The criteria include parents who have children who use technology under the age of

10. The researchers used a semi-structured interview, and they prepared a guide question to ask the

participants. Another instrument that the researcher used was a recording device to ensure that the

participant's comments are precisely recorded so that they can be thoroughly reviewed and studied

after the interview. The researcher has chosen to use the purposive sampling technique due to its

efficiency and alignment with the study's goals. This approach ensures ethical considerations are

upheld throughout the study.

The data analysis through triangulation provides a robust framework for analyzing qualitative

data and enables researchers to broaden their understanding of the subject under investigation. By

consulting with experts in childcare and development, such as pediatricians and teachers, the

researchers aim to deepen their understanding of the technological nanny and gain insights from

various perspectives. This approach allows for a more comprehensive exploration of the complexities

and nuances of human behavior related to the technological nanny phenomenon.

FINDINGS

The findings of this research study offer insightful information about how technology affects

parenting for both parents and their children. The analysis of this study, based on the interviews and

observations of parents about their children’s use of technology, produced several important

conclusions.

Page 32
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
1. It has been noted that many parents recognized the values of technology in supporting their

children's school activities. This is attributed to the fact that technology offers several benefits

for educational purposes. It provides children with easy access to a vast amount of information

and educational resources, aiding them in their learning endeavors. It has been observed that

providing children with access to technology is often perceived as a safer option by some

individuals. They believe that technology enables them to have better control over their

children's whereabouts and facilitates communication between parents and children.

2. The researchers found out that technology has some negative impact on children’s social lives;

some parents stated that their children have conversations with others rarely and often avoid

people around them. The researchers found out that most children are having some self-

changes depending on what they see on the internet. Some parents stated that because of the

contents those children watch online, their attitude starts to change and they even learn how to

curse.

3. The researchers found out that the study has implications for the fields of ICT Strand and

found out the different themes based on the thematic analysis: THE ADVANTAGES AND

DRAWBACKS OF TECHNOLOGY IN PARENTING and REASONS WHY PARENTS USE

TECNOLOGY AS A NANNY.

Page 33
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this research study sheds light on the impact of technology when used as an

alternative tool for parenting. It discusses the necessity for extensive measures to reduce the harmful

effects of children and parents overusing technology and relying on it for parenting, as well as to

establish a healthy digital environment for the wellbeing of today's youth.

1. Through those findings, it has been shown that excessive use of technology among young

children affects their social, physical, and psychological health and development.

Therefore, they must always be monitored and be limited of the time of their technology

use.

2. The researchers found out that children’s behaviour and attitude will change as they

become dependent on technology. As such, they can be aggressive in their behaviour

towards their parents if they take their technology away from them.

3. Based on the findings, technology such as mobile phones is popular among parents

because they can check in on their children throughout the day and communicate with

them. More importantly, knowing where the children are at all times and knowing that

they can be reached immediately in an emergency gives parents peace of mind.

4. The researchers also found that technology has a positive influence on their education. It

has been proven that technology greatly assists children in their schoolwork.

5. As such, interventions and strategies should be implemented to promote healthy

technology and form healthy habits.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Page 34
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
1. To Parents, the researchers recommend that parent's should reduce any potential negative impacts

by being aware of the risks and advantages of using technology as their babysitter.

2. To Educator, the researchers recommend that if educators teach about the benefits of technology as

a babysitter, educator can also assist in developing rules and regulations for utilizing technology in the

classroom and educating kids on how technology impacts them.

3. To Pediatricians, based on the findings, the researchers recommend that a study like this can inform

them about the risk related to children's excessive screen use, and the knowledge they gained could

help motivate kids, families, and other people to use media properly.

4. To Children, based on the findings, the researchers recommend that children should enhance their

comprehension regarding on benefits and drawbacks of using technology so that they can develop

their social habits positively.

5. To Technology companies and developers, based on finding, the research recommends that tech

companies should make technology products that are age- appropriate and practical, so technology

companies would be more responsible and their products would be beneficial.

6. To Future researchers, this study provides a foundation for further exploration and study in the field

of child development and technology that could let them understand the issues and provide them with

awareness.

Nurse and Teachers

Nurse 1

kanilang physical health, mental health, at social development?

isang gawain, tulad ng gawaing bahay or takdang aralin, nagiging emotionally stable, at nababawasan

much using gadget o too much staying on the screen can cause bad effect on the eyes.

NURSE 2: Meron, kase nowadays ngayong henerasyon mostly we using gadget in everyday life hindi

kanilang physical health, mental health, at social development?

kanilang physical health, mental health, at social development?

Page 64
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade

saka nila sinasabi yon kahit di nila original na idea so parang hindi tama yon diba it has to be something
coming from their mind not directly found the a... influence of technology ganon.

TEACHER 1: Okay, negatively and positively, meron silang makukuha jan na maganda, magkakaron
you can see it from most of the student these days pagawin mo lang ng isang simpleng sentence,
sentence na nga lang hahanapin pa ang cellphone para mag hanap ng translator that is techn ology okay
what more if you are going to ask them to do a research what are they going to do they will just seek the
help of their uncle google para sa mga bagay na hindi nila kaya ma produce yon.

Teacher 2

Page 65
Philippine Technological Institute of
Science Arts and Trade
