Acids, Methanol & Brines Supersedes:

Approved by:

1.0 Purpose
To acquaint user with Section 6 and it’s intended usage.

2.0 Scope
Applies to field and office personal.

3.0 Definitions
Baume: (Be’) a European scale of fluid density now superceded by °API.
Titration: adding a standard solution to another solution to determine the amount of a
substance in that solution, in this case, acid and we seek it’s % strength.

4.0 Procedure
 Work through a sample of examples that relate to calculations required for fieldwork.
 A calculator, pen or pencil and work sheet is required.
 This material will be used in conjunction with course material for training purposes.

4.1 Section 6 – Acid, Methanol & Brines

 Page 6-1 gives a description of Acetic acid, properties and exposure effects, as well the
formula required to dilute it from 60% to a desired strength.
 Page 6-2 gives a description of Hydrochloric acid, alternate names for it, usage &
exposure effects.
 Page 6-3 illustrates how much limestone or dolomite is dissolved with 4 different
strengths of HCl or HAc, also shown are 4 other strengths of HCl, their SG, How many
gallons of water needed for 250 gallons of HCl acid and the amount of limestone or
dolomite dissolved.
 Page 6-4 to 6-12 refers to various technical information beginning with a brief
description of methanol.
 Page 6-13 has 3 brine charts for CaCl 2, KCL & NaCl that includes the SG &
hydrostatic gradient all based on the given percentage.
 Page 6-14 has various acid formulas, the must commonly used would be the 12%-3%
HCl/HF blend formula and the volume of strong acid required to make weak acid
formula.
 Volume of diluted acid possible = Volume strong x % strong x SG strong
% dilute x SG dilute
 Page 6-15 gives a detailed explanation on how to titrate or check the strength of HCl
acid, however titration tables are required
