Where in the U.S. are homes most likely to be
broken into?
To mark National Crime Prevention Month, Fence
Gnome ranked 2023’s Most Vulnerable Cities for
Burglaries.
We compared nearly 500 of the biggest U.S. cities
based on target attractiveness — average home value
and share of single-unit detached homes — and bur-
glary prevalence.
See the 10 most vulnerable (and 10 least vulner-
able) cities for burglaries below, followed by key stats
from our report.

Leonardo S.p.A’s AW609 was designed to bring the

capabilities of a helicopter together to create a tiltrotor
aircraft suitable for the civil sector. It was way back in
2002, that tests of the first prototype began, but it would
be a long time yet before this aircraft would attain its
certification.
12 years later, in 2014, certification flights began,
when the AW609 took its first customer on a demon-

manufacturers have, for quite some time, turned to na-

designers were looking at the wrong terrain. Perhaps,
they should have been looking to the bird of the sea, the
stingray.
Still, in its concept phase, Boeing’s blended wing
body (BWB) aircraft looks like something out of a
science fiction film. The obvious benefit of the aircraft’s
design is the increased aerodynamics, however, its
unique shape also provides the aircraft with an added
lift that other designs miss out on – thus the name “Air-
lifter”.

4. 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft

Production Company: Boeing 5 6
Feature: Longer Non-Stop Flights
EST. Cost of Production: $145 Million* (2018)
Boeing’s 787 is not simply a wide-body twin-engine
jet airliner, it’s a “Dreamliner”, and with each new
model the dream keeps getting better. One of Boeing’s
later installments in the series, the 787-9, has a range of
8,786 miles and a cruising speed of Mach 0.85, or 560
mph.
Over the years, Boeing has continued to strive to pro-
vide its customers with the best service possible, and,
now, that service includes taking 280 passengers on a
non-stop 17-hour flight from Perth, Australia to London,
2 England. A world without extended airport transits is
not just a dream any longer, it’s a reality.

Sure, Yellowstone is the nation’s first official national park. But it was Yo-

before Yellowstone received national park designation in 1872, good ol’ Abe

government set aside parkland for preservation and public use.
(714) 536-6300 It’s not unusual to see Yosemite at the top of a “best of” list — it’s almost im-
possible to place it anywhere else. Few other places in the world have inspired
generations of environmentalists, poets, artists, hikers, climbers, and general
outdoor enthusiasts the way that Yosemite has. Yosemite also checks just about
every box when it comes to accessibility, accommodations, activities, and gran-

famous stretch of road in the park, will leave you awestruck before you even

World-class climbing routes attract climbers from around the world. Scenic

Lets Her Hair

Down For Vogue,
1966
T he girl who made the pixie cut famous doesn't look half bad with hair
down to her waist, does she? Of course, Audrey Hepburn was one of
the ideals of feminine beauty in the '50s and '60s, so it was impossible for
her to look bad or even half-bad. While she sported a pixie in her early
hits Roman Holiday (1953) and Sabrina (1954), she began growing her
hair after those films, wearing her longer locks in a series of bobs, up-dos,
buns and half-beehives.
By the time of Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), Hepburn sported a full bee-
hive, but she wasn't done yet. In My Fair Lady (1964), the girl who brought
us the pixie had very long hair, piled up in dramatic tiers like a wedding
cake. Though it's tempting to assume that her My Fair Lady coiffure was
a hairpiece, she appeared to have just as much hair, piled nearly as high,
at the movie's premiere. And then, in 1966, she did what we all must do
once in awhile -- she let her hair down. Photographer William Klein
snapped these pictures for a Vogue feature showing off Givenchy gowns.
But it's safe to say Hepburn's extremely long mane steals the show.

1963 Volkswagen Bus Is a Tiny Camper-Hauling

Semi With a Surprise Engine Swap
Andrew Beckford

A vocal contingent of purists strongly believe

that certain classic cars should be meticu-
lously restored to their original grandeur (or
better). And when the vehicle has a cult following,
like the Volkswagen Type 2, the voices get
louder. That type of car person would hate
this particular custom, but it seems the
owner didn't much care what anyone else
would say. And that's good, because the re-
sult is really fun.
What you're looking at is a 1963 Volks-
wagen Type 2 Split Screen Bus—or, rather,
a '63 Bus and another Type 2 that have been
cut up and mashed together for a truly
unique take on a fifth-wheel concept. The
one-off conversion was completed by the
owner who is now offering it for sale at Ca-
rAndClassic.com. The owner started by
chopping most of the rear end off of one of
the buses, reinforcing the chassis, and turn-
ing it into a truck. Detail shots of the build
show that the owner did a clean job. The
owner didn't stop there, tossing the stock
flat-four engine in favor of a 2.0-liter tur-
bocharged engine sourced from an Audi S3
paired with an automatic gearbox.
That extra power and torque is more than
enough to tow the second Type 2, which

A charging plaza with 258 fast-charging stalls is now
a reality, but when will we see these here?
BY JAY RAMEY PUBLISHED:
• Shell has opened its largest EV station in the world outside the airport in Shenz-
hen, China, with 258 fast-charging stalls.
• The energy company is experimenting with converting gas stations to EV charg-
ing stations, complete with solar cells on canopies for extra power generation.
• Some efforts are under way in the US to bring large charging plazas with dozens
of connectors to the US East Coast, but such projects have yet to come online.

FAMOUS MURDERS
THAT REMAIN
UNSOLVED
By Thomm Quackenbush
Despite what television would have you believe, not every mur-
der is solved in under an hour. No matter how much effort police
put into the cases at the time and amateur sleuths do afterward,
some murders will never be solved.
That's not to say that all unsolved murders are created equal. For
some, almost everything about the case is unknown: the culprit,
the victim's identity, the method, the motive. On occasion, the best
the police can tell the public is that someone was definitely killed,
but anything after that is nebulous. With other cases, everyone
knows who did it, but they managed to get acquitted or gave the
police an alibi. In still others, the only reason that witnesses aren't
pointing fingers at the culprit is that these fingers will be immedi-
ately cut off — along with their heads.
However, for what little good it did for the victims, sometimes
being unable to solve a murder drives those left behind to improve
the world so that no one else has to suffer the same fate.

BOB CRANE:
HOGAN'S HERO

United Archives/Getty Images

Bob Crane was most famously known for his eponymous role
in "Hogan's Heroes" — the only hit he ever had despite nearly two
decades in the industry. AZCentral reports that his body was found
in a Scottsdale, Arizona, apartment on June 29, 1978, his skull
broken and an electrical cord wrapped around his neck.
Owing to the downturn of his career, Crane ended up working
the dinner theater circuit, which brought him into a friendship with
John Carpenter. The two would hook up with Crane's fans. Since
Carpenter was always at the cutting edge of videography, Crane
used him to make allegedly sometimes non-consensual videos of
the sessions. That alone could give a jilted husband motive to end
Crane's life, but one of the main suspects was Carpenter himself.
Carpenter was brought to trial in 1994, based on a speck on a
photo that prosecutors said might have been fat from inside Crane's
skull. The Phoenix New Times quoted Carpenter: "I never even
had a fight with Bob, goddammit. He was my friend. And he was
the goose who laid the golden egg for me, in terms of meeting
ladies." In the end, the forensic evidence was too weak for con-
viction. The Scottsdale police had failed to secure the crime scene
The Local News, October 15, 2023 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

and even lost the supposed human tissue.

In 2017, a Phoenix television anchor wrote a book about the
case: He had managed to analyze some blood found on Carpenter's
rental car. It did not match Crane.

CALIFORNIA — Billionaires in the Golden State got
richer in 2023, according to The Forbes 400, an annual rank-
ing of America’s super rich released Tuesday.
Overall, the 400 richest billionaires in America are worth
$4.5 trillion, tying a record set in 2021. They are about $500
billion richer than they were a year ago, in large part because
of rebounding stock markets and an AI-driven tech boom,
Forbes said.
Billionaires had to have a net worth at least $2.9 billion to
be included on the prestigious list, up from $2.7 billion a
year ago. Forbes said its net worth calculations use stock
prices from Sept. 8.
Oracle software development company founder Larry El-
lison, 79, is the richest person in California. His worth is an
estimated $158 billion and ranks third on the overall list.
Last year, Ellison ranked fourth with $107 billion and was
new to California's list.
Ellison skyrocketed to the top of the state's billionaires list,
beating last year's number one Larry Page worth $114 bil-
lion. Other big names from California that made Forbes' top
400 include filmmakers George Lucas (net worth $4.9 bil-
lion) and Steven Spielberg (net worth $4.88 billion)
This year, however, the richest people in California, hail
from the tech world (Oracle, Meta, Airbnb, Alphabet, What-
sApp, and Apple), finance and private equity, and real es-

tate.
Notable billionaire entertainers and athletes aren't on the
list this year. That includes Oprah ($2.8 billion), Kim Kar-

billion), and LeBron James ($1 billion).

hen an actor plays a role, he or she does everything in their power to really get
into it, to feel as that person would feel, and to portray those feelings on the film.

I Shot Andy Warhol (1996)
This 1996 film is based on the life of the radical feminist writer, Valerie Solanas. Actress
Lili Taylor portrays Solanas during the dark and troubling time in her life that led her to
murdering Andy Warhol. The story goes that after Solanas felt rejected by Warhol, she then
tried to get her book published by French publisher Maurice Girodias. After confusion over
the rights, she felt compelled to kill Warhol after feeling that him and Giordas were con-
spiring against her.
After a mental health evaluation, Solanas was declared mentally unstable and transferred
to the prison ward of Elmhurst Hospital. The film was first screened in 1996 at Cannes,
opening up to mainly positive reviews, and holds a 75% approval rating from critics on
Rotten Tomatoes. It holds the same score on fellow review site, Metacritic.
