NO.: W.293.BR. RAILWAY BOARD CIRCULAR
Sr. DEN (Co) BB, BSL, NGP, PA & SUR
Sub: Span arrangement of Road Over Bridges.
Ref. Railway Board's letter no. 2015/CE-IV/ROB-RUB/Misc dated 15.02.2023
It has been observed that in some cases divisional officers are insisting to place piers
outside railway boundary causing to increase of span unnecessarily and leads to steel
girder with higher depths.
It is further stated that adoption of longer spans require non-standard steel girders
with higher depths thus raising the Road Top Level and in turn causing increasing cost
of the project. Launching of larger spans, from boundary to boundary, will require
more elaborate arrangements, heavier cranes & larger blocks. Also, the maintenance
& replacement, if needed, larger spans shall be more difficult during its service life.
In connection with the above-mentioned subject, kind attention is drawn towards
Railway Board's letter under reference, vide which it is directed that- "Provision of pier
location at boundary need not to be blindly insisted upon at all locations. As far as
possible large span should be adopted considering future requirements’
Therefore, it is advised that span arrangements for ROBs to be finalised judicially &
Pier locations outside railway boundary need not be insisted upon blindly.
