Gaffer = The gaffer is the main head of all lighting for a production.

They are in charge of the lighting and


power department and would be the ones mainly setting up and placing lights and making sure they
have sufficient power for the use. To be a gaffer you need to be a fully qualified electrician.

Best boys = The best boys are second in seniority and control of lighting on a set. They are mainly
responsible for the technical side of lighting, ordering, and maintaining inventory, and assisting the key
grippers with inventory. To be a best boy you do not need any formal qualifications only to do a
course/apprenticeship in lighting.

Lighting technicians = Lighting technicians are responsible for setting up, rigging, programming,
monitoring, repairing, and operating lighting equipment to enhance events and performances. To
become a lighting techniction you would need a qualification in physics or electrical engineering.

Apprentice lighting technicians = apprentice lighting technicians arrive at the set early and may assist in
unloading the equipment. Following the instructions of the best boy and the Sparks, they help set up the
filming under supervision and run errands. To become an ALT you need qualifications in BTEC
Diploma/Extended Diploma in Electrical and Electronic.

Controle operator = The job and responsibility of a control operator is to monitor the quality of the feed
when something is live and ensuring it meets the standards and regulations of the government. They
can also troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and make the program able for playback in the future. To
become a control operator, you need experience working in controlling lights and sounds in film on
plays and tv sets.

Generator operator = The generator operator as the name implies will control the generator and
provide sufficient power in areas of low power or lower access to power for equipment such as lights or
cameras. To be a generator operator you need to be fully qualified electrinos.

Lamp operator = They're in charge of making sure the lighting in a period film is suitable for the time it is
set in. They need to make sure the equipment and fittings are ready to go once filming is finished. To
become one, you will need technical skills in lighting.

Set electricians = The Film Electrician is responsible for the lighting of a movie set and is usually part of
the team that sets up the lights for a movie and works closely with the best boys, gaffers, and lighting
technicians. To become a set electricians you need qualifications in Level 2 Diploma in Access to Building
Services Engineering (Electrical) Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation.
