SECTION B

QUESTION 1

(a) Nuclear fission makes heat -> heated water makes steam -> steam turns turbines -> turbines
turn generator -> power is distributed around the country.
(b) Geothermal is a renewable source of energy because it can be used again/re-used again.
(c) – not expensive
- No air pollution.
- Large amount of energy is produced from small amount of fuel.
- Produces small waste.
- Is reliable.

QUESTION 2

(a) Because when there is no wind, there is no energy.

(b) – telecommunications
- Solar geysers
- Solar furnaces
(any relevant applications)

QUESTION 3

(a) Energy cannot be created nor destroyed but, can only be converted or transformed from one
form to the other and the total amount of energy never changes under the same temperature.
(b) Work is the process of transferring the energy through motion while energy is the capacity to do
work.
(c) Work is done when there is a force applied on an object over a distance in the same direction as
the force applied.

QUESTION 4

(a) P.E = mgh

= (7 kg)(9.8m/s^2)(210 m)

= 14406 J

(b) For energy to be conserved,

K.E = P.E
1
mv 2 = mgh
2
v = √2gh
= √2(9.8)(210)
= 64.1 m/s

(c) Power is the rate at which work is done.

(d) (i) power = voltage x Current

180 w = 30 V x I
I = 180 W/ 30 V
=6A

(ii) R = V/I
= 30 V/6 A
= 5 Ω (Ohm)
