Lesson Plan

Grade 9 American Physical Geography

Objectives:

● To understand the different types of mountain ranges in America and their


locations.
● To identify the physical characteristics of mountain ranges and how they
were formed.
● To understand the importance of mountain ranges to the environment and
human activities.

Materials:
● Computer with internet access
● Whiteboard or smartboard
● Map of the United States
● Handout with a summary of key points for each mountain range
● Writing materials for each student

Introduction (10 minutes):

● Show a map of the United States and ask students to identify the different
mountain ranges on the map.
● Write the names of the mountain ranges on the whiteboard or smartboard.
● Explain the objectives of the lesson.

Lecture (30 minutes):

● Use a PowerPoint or another presentation software to explain the different


mountain ranges in America.
● Cover the following points for each mountain range:
● Location
● Physical characteristics
● How they were formed
● Importance to the environment and human activities
● Show images and videos to help students understand the features and
importance of each mountain range.

Assignment (40 minutes):

● Distribute a handout to each student that summarizes the key points for
each mountain range.
● Have students work in groups of 4-5 to research one of the mountain
ranges and prepare a 5-minute presentation for the class.
● Students must include the following information in their presentations:
● Location and physical characteristics
● How the mountain range was formed
● Importance to the environment and human activities
● Any unique or interesting facts about the mountain range
● After each presentation, have the class ask questions and have a
discussion about the mountain range.

Conclusion (10 minutes):

● Review the key points of the lesson.


● Ask students to reflect on what they learned and how they can apply their
knowledge to understand the physical geography of other regions in the
world.
● Summarize the main points of each presentation and emphasize the
importance of mountain ranges to the environment and human activities.
Evaluation:

● Student presentations
● Class participation
