Q.1. Find the current through the Zener diode when the load resistance is 1
KΩ. Use diode approximation.

Answer:
Given:
I= 15 v.
VZ=VL= 9v.
RZ= 1k Ω
RL= 2k Ω
To Find:
IL=?
I=?
I2=?
Solution:
I= I2 + IL
As load resistance is connected in parallel with Zener diode, so voltage is same at
both point.
IL= VL / RL
IL= 9 / 2x103
IL= 4.5x10-3
IL=4.5 mA
I= Vmax – Vz / Rz
I= 15-9 / 1x103
I= 6mA.
I= IL + I2
I2= I – IL
I2= 6 – 4.5
I2= 1.5 mA.

Q.2. An ideal diode and a 5 Ω resistor are connected in series with a 15 V

power supply as shown in figure below. Calculate the current that flows
through the diode.

Answer:
Given:
V = 15V
R = 5Ω
To Find:
I=?
Solution:
As diode is ideal so voltage drop across it is zero, Hence:
V=IxR
I=V/R
I = 15 / 5
I = 3 A.

Q.3. Find the current through the diode in the circuit shown in Fig. Assume
the diode to be ideal.

Answer:
Given:
R1= 50 Ω
R2= 5 Ω
V = 10 v
To Find:
I=?
Solution:
As diode is ideal so voltage across it is zero.
R T= R 1 + R 2
I= V / R total
I= V / (R1 + R2)
I= 10 / (50 + 5)
I= 10 / 55
I= 0.18 A.
