PROBLEM SOLVING:
Using GRESA, solve the following problems:
G-Given; R-Required; E-Equation; S-Solution; and A-Answer
1. Find the current I through a resistor of resistance R = 2 Ω if the voltage across the resistor is 6 V.
Given:
V= 6 V, R=2 Ω
I=?
Formula: I = V/R
Solution:
I= 6/ 2
I= 3
2. In the circuit below resistors R1 and R2 are in series and have resistances of 5 Ω and 10 Ω, respectively.
The voltage across resistor R1 is equal to 4 V. Find the current passing through resistor R2 and the voltage
across the same resistor.
Given:
Answer:
V2 = 8V ; I2 = 0.8V
Explanation:
I = V/R
I = 4V / 5 ohm
I = 0.8A --- this will also be the value of I2 since Current across a series circuit are of with the same values.
Getting the value of V2,
V = IR
V2 = 8V
3. In the circuit below resistors R1 and R2 are in parallel and have resistances of 8 Ω and 4 Ω, respectively.
The current passing through R1 is 0.2 A. Find the voltage across resistor R2 and the current passing
through the same resistor.
Given:
Rt= R1+R2=
I=0.2 A
V=?
Solution:
Rt= R1+R2=
Rt= 8+4=12 Ω
V= I R
V=0.2/12
V= 0.016
4. The current passing through a resistor in a circuit is 0.01 A when the voltage across the same resistor is 5
V. What current passes through this resistor when the voltage across it is 7.5 V?
Given:
Current passing through a resistor in a circuit = 0.01 A
Voltage supply across the resistor = 5 V
Solution
V = RI "
Resistance = voltage/current
current = voltage/resistance
Resistance of the resistor
= voltage supply/current drawn
= 5 V / 0.01 A
= 500 ohms
voltage supply/resistance
= 7.5 V / 500 ohms
= 0.015 A
5. In an experiment of measuring the current through an unknown resistor, a student obtained the following
data.
3.0 0.151
6.0 0.310
9.0 0.448
12.0 0.511
15.0 0.750
(a) By drawing a graph on paper, show the relationship between current and voltage.
