Instructions: Read LG 4.1 and 4.2 and answer the following questions in your Bio3 notebook. We will
check your answer upon our return next week.

I. Provide 1 sentence definition/description for the following terms:

1. Conserved gene
2. Apoptosis
3. Cytochrome C
4. rRNA
5. mDNA
6. Gene Duplication
7. Orthologous genes
8. Paralogous genes

II. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if otherwise.
__________1. By speciation, paralogous genes for a trait are found in organisms that have the same
recent ancestors.
__________2. To deduce the relationship among groups of organisms that have diverge million years
ago, a DNA sequence that mutates relatively slow will be used.
__________3. Neutral mutation in genes can still lead to genetic variation.
__________4. A specific gene can perform different tissue functions within an organism.
__________5. All gene duplication can lead to genomic and phenotypic variation.
__________6. The higher the number of mutations or changes in the nucleotides or amino acid
sequences, the farther is their relationship.
__________7. rRNA is useful in tracing the ancestry of races and identifying the origins and relationships
of organisms.
__________8. Cats and dogs do have homologous genes despite having different recent ancestors.
__________9. With the availability of molecular techniques, duplication events can now be observed in
the laboratory allowing scientists to look into an organism’s genome and examine events of gene
duplication.
__________10. Orthologous genes resulted from gene speciation while paralogous genes are genes
brought by gene duplication.
