3.7 Operation

3.7.1 Controls and indicators

The following table lists the main controls and indicators of the excitation system.
These controls and indicators are accessed locally, either by using push buttons or
a dedicated ControLCP, and also a remote control system. The controls and
indicators listed below are available on the ControLCP but depend on the project
configuration. Local controls are only active if appropriate user level and local mode
control have been selected.

Please refer to part 2 of “Operating and maintenance manual” document for

supplementary information on the indicators and controls of the ControLCP.

Local/Remote control

The command signals may originate from, and status signals may be displayed at
different locations: the local control system (in front of the excitation cubicle), a
separate control cubicle, or a remote control system (e.g. a DCS system) in a
separate control room.
Remote control means that only the command signals received from the remote
control system are taken into account, therefore the local control system is
disabled.
Local control means that only the commands given on the ControLCP on the
front of the cubicle are effective, whereas the commands from other locations are
ineffective.

To toggle between Local and Remote control refer to part 2 of “Operating

and maintenance manual” document.

Channel 1/Channel 2 changeover

In a redundant configuration with two regulators, it is possible to change over

from Channel 1 to Channel 2 and from Channel 2 to Channel 1.
Regulator changeover may be automatic after a fault in the active channel, or it
may be selected by the operator in both control modes, Remote and Local.
Automatic regulator changeover takes place after the following faults:
Excitation overcurrent – 1st stage fault.
Regulator watchdog.
Measuring system fault.
Thyristor firing pulse generator fault.
.
Modbus connection to DCS lost.
Faults indicated above are not exhaustive and further indication on the reason for
changeover can be obtained through the LCP alarm display.
The inactive channel operates in tracking mode, i.e. it behaves as a shadow
regulator; this is to ensure a smooth changeover from one channel to the other.
Channel 1 or Channel 2 is selected either from the ControLCP with the
appropriate user level, or by a command from the remote control system.

To toggle between Channel 1 and Channel 2 through LCP refer to part 2 of

“Operating and maintenance manual” document.

OPERATING INSTRUCTION
12/27
Auto/Manual switching

Each channel has an integrated manual mode, and the generator can be
controlled by this manual mode as well.
When the generator is controlled by the automatic mode, its voltage is maintained
constant whatever the network conditions.
When the generator is controlled by the manual mode, only the excitation current
is maintained constant. In case of a network disturbance, it is the responsibility of
the operator to ensure a constant generator voltage by adjusting the excitation
current. The manual mode is mainly used at the commissioning stage, or for
special start-up and maintenance operations.
During operation with the manual mode, when the field breaker is closed, the
excitation current setpoint is set to the no load rotor current value of the
generator. When the generator breaker is opened, the excitation current setpoint
is also automatically set to the no load rotor current value.
At any time it is possible to switch between the automatic and the manual mode
without any problems, since the non active mode operates in follow up mode.
The automatic channel is selected either from the ControLCP, or by a command
from a remote control system. The status is indicated on the ControLCP.

To toggle between the different regulation modes through LCP refer to part
2 of “Operating and maintenance manual” document.

OPERATING INSTRUCTION
14/27
Voltage control

During operation with the automatic mode, the generator voltage is controlled by
the voltage regulation loop.
It is possible to switch from other regulation modes (reactive power control or
power factor control) to the voltage control mode. To switch to voltage control a
command may be sent either with the ControLCP on the front of the excitation
cubicle, or through the remote control system. When voltage control is in use, this
is displayed on LCP.
As soon as the field breaker is closed, the voltage setpoint is set to the rated
value of the generator.

To toggle between the different regulation modes through LCP refer to part
2 of “Operating and maintenance manual” document.
On ControLCP, the voltage set point can be adjusted by means of lower and
raise commands. In remote control mode, if the external setpoint is validated
(Modbus, HMI or hardwired), the voltage setpoint will be followed with a ramp.

Reactive power control

During operation with the automatic mode, provided the generator is connected
to a network, it is possible to control the reactive power of the generator. For this,
the regulator is switched to the reactive power control mode through the LCP, or
through the remote control system.
When reactive power control is in use, this is displayed on LCP.

To toggle between the different regulation modes through LCP refer to part
2 of “Operating and maintenance manual” document.
When reactive power control is not active, the reactive power set point follows the
actual reactive power. Hence, switching to reactive power control is always
smooth since the generator will keep on working at the same operating point.
On ControLCP, the reactive power set point can be adjusted by means of lower
and raise commands. In remote control mode, if the external setpoint is validated
(Modbus, HMI or hardwired), the reactive power setpoint will be followed with a
ramp.

When the generator breaker is opened, the regulator is automatically

switched to the voltage control mode.

OPERATING INSTRUCTION
16/27
Setpoint raise \ Setpoint lower commands

These commands are used to adjust the set points for different control modes,
i.e. manual control, voltage control, reactive power control or power factor control.
Only the operational set point is adjusted, the other set points simply follow their
respective actual values.
Setpoint raise \ setpoint lower are given either on the ControLCP on the front of
the excitation cubicle or through the remote control system.

To raise or lower setpoint through LCP refer to part 2 of “Operating and

maintenance manual” document.

Set point changes can also be commanded by means of analogue 4-20 mA

current signals.

Which set point is changed depends on the control mode selected. E.g: If
the voltage control has been selected, the voltage setpoint will be adjusted, but in
manual mode it is always the current setpoint which is adjusted.

This function is available in all operating modes. The setpoint values can
also be set directly by a digital signal from the remote control system (HMI or
Modbus).

Automatic voltage control

If the automatic mode with voltage control has been selected, the operating
point of the generator can be changed by means of Setpoint raise \ Setpoint
lower commands.
As long as the generator is not connected to a power network, the Setpoint
raise \ Setpoint lower commands cause the output voltage of the generator to
change.
When the generator is connected to a power network, the Setpoint raise \
Setpoint lower commands cause the reactive power of the generator to
change.
When the operating limits of the generator are reached, the Setpoint raise \
Setpoint lower commands are no longer effective. This is indicated on the
ControLCP.
Manual current control
If the manual mode has been selected, it is the excitation current of the
generator which is changed by the Setpoint raise \ Setpoint lower commands.
As long as the generator is not connected to a network, the Setpoint raise \
Setpoint lower commands cause the output voltage of the generator to
change.
When the generator is connected to a network, the Setpoint raise \ Setpoint
lower commands cause the reactive power of the generator to change.

Operating and maintenance manual – Part 3 EC2-400044-A4-CGOMM-03-EN

OPERATING INSTRUCTION
17/27
When the operating limits of the generator are reached, the Setpoint raise \
Setpoint lower commands are no longer effective. This is indicated on the
ControLCP.

During operation with the manual mode, the only limitation is usually that
of the field current, which is not allowed to exceed 110 % of its rated value.
This limit may permit operation with a stator current above rated when the
generator voltage is less than rated.
Optionally, the manual mode may include an upper and/or a lower stator
voltage limitation.
The operator must ensure that the generator's operating point remains within
the range of safe operation (referring to the P/Q diagram of the generator).

When the manual mode is used, it is essential that the generator is

operated by experienced staff.

Reactive Power control (option)

When the generator operates with reactive power control control, the regulator
controls and imposes a reactive power supply consistent with the turbine
power to maintain a constant power factor. The operating point of the
generator can be changed by using the Setpoint raise \ Setpoint lower
commands.
This facility is only available with generators connected to a powerful network.
When the generator is disconnected from the network to operate as an
isolated power source, the regulator is forced to voltage control.
This function is interlocked with the position of the generator breaker or of any
other circuit breaker designed to disconnect the generator from the power
network.
When the operating limits of the generator are reached, the Setpoint raise \
Setpoint lower commands are no longer effective. This is indicated on the
ControLCP.

Field breaker closing / opening

Field breaker closing is selected either on the ControLCP or through the remote
control system. When the field breaker is closed, the status is displayed on the
ControLCP.

To close or open field breaker through LCP refer to part 2 of “Operating and
maintenance manual” document.
On field breaker closing, the setpoint value, depending on the operating mode
(automatic or manual) is automatically pre-set to a previously defined value.
Field breaker opening is selected either on the ControLCP, or through the remote
control system and forces the pulse generator in inverter mode during 200ms
(standard value) and open the field breaker after. When the field breaker is
opened, the ControLCP displays the status of the breaker.

3.7.2 Start-up sequence

When the generator is about to be synchronised with the network for the first
time, check carefully that the phase sequence of the network is consistent with that
of the generator and also that the synchronisation equipment is properly connected
and working correctly. Such checks must be made after any works carried out on
the power circuits, whether on the generator side or on the network side.
Automatic mode
During operation with voltage (V) control using the automatic mode, when the
load is increased, the reactive power does not change as long as the network
voltage is constant.
Any change in the network voltage produces a change in reactive power, which
must remain within the limits of the reactive power capability curve (P/Q
diagram).
With power factor (tan phi) control, the reactive power changes only with the load,
keeping the power factor at its reference value.
With reactive power (Q) control, the reactive power is maintained at its reference
value.
Manual mode
During operation with excitation current control using the manual mode, the
reactive power changes when either the load or the network voltage is changed,
and the operator must adjust the field current set point to keep the generator
within its safe operating range.

3.7.3 Shut-down sequence

Normal stop sequence

The normal stop sequence is the following:

Step Description AVR status or actions

1
Reduce the power of the driving - Give +Stp/-Stp commands to
engine (active power will decrease). decrease the reactive power

2
- Reduce the reactive power to
zero before opening the generator
Reduce reactive power through circuit breaker.
AVR (Normal Unit Stop digital input
command)

3
- Generator breaker opening
- The generator breaker is
Generator breaker opening opened. This causes the excitation
current reference to be pre-set to the
no-load field current, or the voltage
reference to the value corresponding to
the rated voltage.
4
- Field breaker will be opened
when reactive power is reduced to Zero
Field breaker opening and GCB is opened,

Emergency shut-down

Emergency shut-down
An emergency shut down can be selected by the generator protection device.

Step Description AVR status or actions

1
Depending on the type of fault, the driving Tripping fault
engine is tripped or its power is reduced.
The generator breaker is opened
2
The thyristor bridge is forced to operate in Field breaker opening
inverter mode. In all cases, when the turbo-
generator slows down or is stopped, the
field breaker must be opened

Thyristor bridge fault

Depending on the redundancy structure, in case of a thyristor bridge faults (over
temperature, fuse fault, non-conduction) the generator is able to operate without the
faulty bridge. The supply of firing pulses to the faulty bridge is interrupted and
maintenance actions can take place according to the configuration of the excitation
system (excitation system isolated and shut down or during operation of the
generator).

The field breaker cannot be opened unless the generator breaker has been
opened
