4.2 Risks & Protection

ELECTRICAL PROTECTION
Your equipment may imply various risks for you or your equipment.
These risks essentially concern Electricity
• electric shock
• transient increases and decreases in electrical power
• electrostatic discharge
As a result, you may be injured and/or your operator station may suffer
damage. Please remember that operating or working inside your
equipment may impact your physical integrity.

POWER OFF
Power off your equipment before hardware installation.

RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE

Most electronic equipment is influenced by radio frequency
interference (RFI). Caution should be exercised with regard to the use
of portable communications equipment around such equipment. Signs
should be posted near the equipment cautioning against the use of
portable communication equipment.

STATIC SENSITIVE DEVICES

Modules in the ALSPA system may contain static sensitive devices
which can be damaged by incorrect handling of the module. The
procedure for module removal is detailed in relevant product
descriptions and must be followed. All ALSPA equipment must have
labels fitted to the personnel to observe antistatic precautions when
touching modules.

4.3 Standards & codes

ALSPA Control System’s operation station has been developed, manufactured and
tested in compliance with the relevant standards.
All these standards are indicated in the following document
ALSPA System - Standards and Codes ptp20a49970
Always bear in mind that optimal operation of the equipment begins with the
compliance with its standards.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
6/26
The abovementioned document specifies the certification, the operating
environment and the electro-magnetic environment in which your equipment should
be operated.

4.4 General

Preventive maintenance aims to ensure that the equipment works correctly, to a

high degree of reliability and availability.
The electronic boards do not require any particular maintenance, but other devices
could suffer from accumulations of dust, leading to flashover between live parts. In
addition the excitation system may be installed in a place where it is exposed to
strong vibrations; which could cause damage to the contacts.

4.5 Safety recommendations

Before any action detailed in this manual is carried out, the Site Health and Safety
Instructions should be read and fully understood. The instructions in this document
should also be read and fully understood.
Safety procedures must be followed to lock the excitation system during operations
inside the excitation cubicle by using a key switch or other equivalent devices.
High voltages and heavy currents are present inside the cubicle and on the
excitation transformer. People can be severely injured by accidental contact with live
parts (field breaker, busbars,...).
Maintenance work should only be carried out with the excitation system switched off
and all sensitive parts (field breaker, discharging resistors, ...) discharged. Before
starting any maintenance work, the cubicle must be earthed.
Requirements to maintenance personnel
Whenever the equipment is operated, maintained or used in any way, the
procedures in the Site Health and Safety instructions and any procedures detailed in
this document should be followed.
All maintenance personnel must be trained on preventive and corrective
maintenance.
They must be well acquainted with the excitation system, its power supply structure
(redundancy, etc...), as well as its operating modes (local, remote ...).
Personnel must be informed and trained in emergency actions like emergency shut
down, fire fighting etc...
Only authorised personnel may perform manipulations inside the excitation cubicle.

4.7 General requirements

Although the electronic boards and most electrical devices do not need any
particular maintenance, some environmental conditions, mainly vibrations, are likely
to alter the reliability of the equipment. Under normal operating conditions, the
equipment only requires regular visual inspections and periodical cleaning.
The recommended cleaning consists of removing dirt and dust by means of a brush
and a vacuum cleaner, and oil and grease by means of a non-toxic cleaning agent,
ensuring sufficient aeration.
Recommended inspections include the following:
Check for the absence of dirt, moisture or foreign materials.
Check that all electrical connections are tight and clean.
Check that all parts are tightly secured with their mounting hardware.
Check that no cable insulation are worn, cut or burnt.
Note: Switch off power to the equipment before cleaning and inspection.

4.9.4 Testing regulator changeover

Special tools
No special tools
Safety requirements

The cubicle is switched on. Attention should be paid when performing this
work.
Preliminary conditions
The checks below have to be performed before a regulator changeover is
command is sent.
Check that there are no problems or faults in the stand-by regulator,
Check that there are no problems or faults in the manual mode,
If OK, inform the control room that manual changeover from the active to the
stand-by channel or from the automatic to the manual mode, is possible in safe
conditions.
Procedure

The response of the generator must be carefully observed during the

changeover process. Check the generator parameter values. If the field current
and/or the generator voltage change considerably, switch back immediately to
the previous channel.
Check that there is no stand-by channel fault (and/or manual mode fault),
If OK, perform manually a change-over from the active to the stand-by channel
(and/or from the automatic to the manual mode).
Switch back to the formerly active channel (and/or the automatic mode).
Failure to perform such tests on a regular basis could result in malfunction, at
least in tripping of the Turbo-Generator unit, in the event of a regulator fault.

Special tools
No special tools
Safety requirements
All unused power supplies should be locked to prevent any other person from
switching on the equipment during maintenance works.
Preliminary conditions
The main power supply must be switched off and disconnected. The auxiliary
power supply must be available for testing purposes.
Procedure
1. Checking the fused thyristor switches
Check the fuses micro-switches of each thyristor bridge. Open the blowing
indicator (with a small screwdriver) on each micro-switch in order to simulate
switch closing. Check the alarms corresponding to the thyristor faults. Shut the
indicator and acknowledge the alarms by pressing the "FAULT RESET"
button.
2. Checking the set points and proper working of thermostats (option)
Reduce the set point of the thermostat in front of the cooling duct of the
thyristor bridge.
Check switch closing by means of an ohmmeter. Check for a temperature
alarm and acknowledge it.

The setting has to be low enough to detect a low differential air pressure, clue
of the fan operation (i.e: between 20 and 100 Pa).
When the fan is stopped, check the contact actuation when the differential air
pressure is no more detected.
