Activity 16.01: Reacting Appropriately
Directions: With your partner read a statement below. Your partner must respond appropriately using
phrases learned in the last lesson.
Ask each other questions and have a real conversation based on the statement, then continue with
a new phrase.
Ex: Student 1: I won the lottery!
Student 2: Wow! I’m so happy for you! What are you doing with the money?
Student 1: I’m going to buy a car.

1. I’m pregnant!
2. I found out today that I'm going to win a prize for a short story I submitted to a
competition in a national newspaper.
3. I’ve won the lottery!
4. Did you hear that she got engaged, changed her job and moved to a new
house all in one week?

Activity 16.02: Backwards Story!


Directions: As your partner tells a creative story about their last vacation or past weekend, make sure
to use all the phrases below to interject in their story.
Ex: S1: I was walking down the street yesterday and I found $20!
S2: Wow! That’s great news!
S1: Yeah, but then I tripped and fell in the mud and the money went flying.
S2: Oh no! I’m so sorry for you.
S1: It’s ok, because then, Beyonce appeared out of nowhere!
S2: You’re kidding me!

Activity 17.03: Managing Practice


Directions: Read each situation and give suggestions to the challenges faced in the meetings.

1. Nobody is listening and you would like to start an important meeting.


2. You are running a meeting, but don’t have any actual expertise on the subject.
You are just here to mediate.
3. No one is talking in the meeting, or giving ideas.
4. People can’t agree on an important topic and the argument is going nowhere.
5. Your company has just gone through a merger and people are excited about the
news, but the meeting is about a different topic.
6. One person has brought up an important topic, but it’s not the one you’re
discussing at the moment.
7. You are participating in a meeting and would like to add something to the
discussion.
