CHAPTER 2 & 3

Research Activity

Read the Chapter 2 and 3 in our manuscript and thoroughly answer the following questions below:

Chapter 2

What are the two variables present in our study? Briefly define each.

1. Level of Motivation- refers to a psychological element needed by a student to continue pursuing his or
her goals

2. Academic Self-Concept- in my understanding, academic self-concept is the foundation of the

student’s self-awareness of his or hers experiences and knowledge.

What do you think is the purpose of Related literature (variable discussion)?

-The importance and the purpose of Related literature is that it helps to prove the point of the study by
grouping all of the other related manuscripts that will help the researches prove their point and it acts
as a shield for the research itself.

Choose a defining paragraph under the variable discussion - one for each variable and explain in your
own words.

- Student commitment and attentiveness in class are essential conditions for active learning. They must be
inspired, as per Naylor et al. (2017), and have high motivation to be active and engaged in class. Knowing
the students' motivation levels is vital to use as a tool to perform better academically. Additionally, it was
concluded that students are affected more by motivational factors and that motivation level decreases as
grade level increases. Mastery-oriented learning is a significant predictor of all dimensions of class
engagement.

- Active learning requires students' motivation and focus in the classroom, which are both necessary. To
participate actively and be interested in class, they must be motivated and inspired. To use as a tool to do
better academically, it is essential to understand the students' levels of motivation.

What do you think is the purpose of including the Theoretical Framework in our study?
-It acts like a foundation for your hypotheses and the chosen research method, it supports the study’s
theory.

Read and understand each theory under our theoretical framework. Explain how it is related to our
research.

McClelland’s Achievement Motivation Theory

-There are 3 stages of why a person is motivated, The need for achievement, power, and affiliation. It is
said that the need for achievement usually means liking the challenge and the feeling of success. While
in power it means control, influence, motivation, and responsibility among other people. Lastly,
affiliation is driven by the social connection that is to be gained. It’s related to our study because we are
discussing the factors affecting a students level of motivation.

Rogers’ Three Parts of Self-Concept

-Ideal self, self-image, and self-esteem are the three parts of an individual’s self-concept. Rogers
proposed that ideal self means the skills and qualities the individual is capable of, Self-image is how the
individual see’s himself presently, and lastly is self-esteem is the amount of worth and approval we
assign to our self-concept as influenced by what we and other people believe, as well as the role we play
in society.

What is the essence of including a Conceptual Framework/Model in our study?

-It represents the relationship between the two variables which in our study is the “Level of Motivation”
and “Academic Self-concept”

Briefly explain figure 1 under Conceptual Framework.

- shows the connection between the academic self-concept and motivation levels of honors students in
grade 12.

Chapter 3

What is the complete description of the research design we utilized in our study? Why did we use it?

- The research is a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational study. Because we want to prove the
relationship between our two variables.

Where is our research conducted, and which respondents are included in it (include the full criteria)?
-Grade 12 honor students of Our Lady of Fatima University – Valenzuela, located at MacArthur Highway,
in Brgy. Marulas, Valenzuela City,

Which two sampling techniques did we utilize in our study? Where are those derived from, and why
were those used?

-Purposive Sampling and Quota Sampling Techniques, derived from Non-probability Sampling.

-Purposive Sampling allows the researchers to choose the respondent that best fits the research’s
criteria or requirements.

-Quota Sampling is used because the research only needed a small number of individuals from the area.

What is the purpose of Research Ethics? What ethical principles are mentioned in this section?

-Research ethics serves as a protection for the researchers and the research’s rights.

Which research instrument is most useful for you while completing our study?

-A screening tool, because it filters the respondents by those who are fit and aren’t fit to participate in
the study.

What content is included in Data Collection?

-Clearly specify research objectives and details

-Composing a research questionnaire to represent its objectives

-Choose the most appropriate approach to gather and extract the information needed in the study

-Permission and consent from the respondents to participate in the inquiry

-Selected methods and techniques to analyze gathered data will be employed to extract information and
present a conclusion.

How do you understand Data Analysis?

-A part of the research where the researchers analyze the data collected from the study and from there
it’ll determine whether there is a relationship between the two variables using the Pearson correlation
coefficient formula.

Which statistical tool will be employed in analyzing the data we will gather? Why was it specifically
chosen?

-The Pearson correlation coefficient approach was chosen by the researchers since it is effective for
identifying linear correlations and assessing statistical hypotheses. It is also used to identify the
relationship between two variables which in our case are Level of Motivation and Academic self-
concept.

Special Section
Enumerate the two standardized tests we used in our study. Briefly explain how it works (question type
and measures).

- Motivation - AMS-C 28- a 7-point Likert scale, it has a total of 28 items. It is used to measure the level
of motivation.

What is the essence of presenting the respondents with an Informed Consent Form?

An informed consent is a written agreement from the researches to the respondents, it serves as a
protection for the respondent’s rights and a “go” sign for the researches because without the informed
consent the research will not proceed.
