MOTION in ONE DIMENSION

Motion- change in position of an object with respect to a reference point; the

result of the unbalanced forces

Types of Motion

1. According to its speed

a. Uniform motion- a motion which has a constant speed
b. Non-uniform motion- a motion which speeds up or slows down

2. According to the path of the motion

a. Linear motion- a motion in a straight path
b. Circular motion
c. Vibrational motion
d. Projectile motion
e. Elliptical motion

Vector Quantity –described with magnitude and direction

Ex. Velocity, displacement
Scalar Quantity- described with magnitude only
Ex. Speed, distance

DISTANCE- the length/ ground that has covered

dt=d1+d2………..
N
DISPLACEMENT- the change of position from one point to another point.
E (+)
d= d2 - d1……….. W

or
S (-)
d = final position – initial position

NOTE: Apply the concept of vectors when getting the magnitude and direction when dealing with
displacement and velocity.

Speed - how fast or slow an object is.

Velocity- how fast or slow an object is with a specific direction

Example: A car travels 48 km going south for half an hour. Calculate its
velocity.
Given: Solution Answer:
d = 48 km, South The velocity of the
t= 0.5 h 𝑑 car is 96 km/h, South.
