QUESTION: Write a paper entitled Of robotics and mechatronics–a scholarly

perspective
INTRODUCTION
In recent years, the field of mechatronics and robotics engineering has seen rapid growth and
development. This is due in part to the advancement of technology, which has made it
possible to create increasingly sophisticated robots and automated systems. These advances
have led to many exciting applications in a variety of industries, including manufacturing,
healthcare, and transportation. This paper will explore some of the key technologies that have
enabled these advances, and the ways in which they are being applied to improve our lives.
This essay aims to explore the interdisciplinary nature of robotics and mechatronics, their
significance in academia, and their potential implications for the future. By delving into the
scholarly perspective, we can gain a deeper understanding of the impact these fields have on
society. The goal of mechatronic engineering is to create automated machines. Electrical
engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science come together at this point. But it
stands out because it only considers the interactions between the mechanical and electrical
components of the system as a whole.

MECHATRONICS
Mechatronics engineering is a rapidly growing and highly interdisciplinary field that
combines the principles of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering to design,
develop, and maintain mechatronic systems (National Engineering Accreditation Board,
2022). Mechatronic systems are "controlled by computer programs" (Davis & Winston,
2017), and are used in a wide range of industries. Mechatronics engineers must "ensure the
reliability and efficiency of their systems" (Hamilton & Watts, 2016). Mechatronics, coined
by the Japanese engineer Tetsuro Mori in the late 1960s, signifies the integration of
mechanics and electronics into a harmonious whole, culminating in the creation of systems
that exhibit synergistic behavior beyond the capabilities of individual components.
Mechatronic systems blur the lines between traditionally distinct disciplines, combining
mechanical components with sensors, actuators, and computational intelligence to achieve
desired objectives.
To design and create intelligent systems, the multidisciplinary area of mechatronics combines
mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science. To manage complexity,
uncertainty, and communication in engineered systems, it entails the integration of sensors,
actuators, signal conditioning, power electronics, decision and control algorithms, and
computer hardware and software.
Mechatronics systems typically consist of the following four components:
Sensors: Sensors are used to measure physical variables such as position, force, temperature,
and speed.
Actuators: Actuators are used to convert electrical signals into mechanical motion.
Controllers: Controllers are used to process sensor data and send control signals to actuators.
Computers: Computers are used to program and control the system.
Here are some of the key aspects of mechatronics:
System integration: Mechatronics systems are often complex and involve the integration of
mechanical, electrical, computer, and control systems.
Real-time control: Mechatronics systems often need to respond to changes in their
environment in real time.
Intelligence: Mechatronics systems are becoming increasingly intelligent, with the ability to
learn and adapt to their environment.
Mechatronics is a rapidly growing field with a wide range of applications. As mechatronic
systems become more intelligent and capable, they are likely to play an increasingly
important role in our lives.
Mechatronics is a challenging but rewarding field of engineering. Mechatronics engineers
have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies and develop products that have a
real impact on the world.

APPLICATIONS
Computer systems, mechanical structures and design, electrical and electronic systems,
networking and telecommunications as well as instrumentation and embedded control
systems are engineering specialties that fall under the umbrella of mechatronics. This field of
engineering concentrates on mechanical and electrical systems and may make use of
computer, robotic, control, electronic, and telecommunications systems. SCADA
systems/PLCs/ DCS, robotic manipulators in health and mining sector, drones in military
sectors, anti-lock brake systems for automobiles, and printed circuit boards are a few
examples of items that have been built employing mechatronics engineering. All of these
goods are mechanical, but in order to operate, they need electrical, electronics and computer
control systems thus encompassing integration of mechanical and electronics to come up with
smart mechatronics systems.
Here are some examples of mechatronic systems:

 Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) in cars

 Automatic cruise control in cars

 Robotic arms in manufacturing

ROBOTICS
Robotics, according to Merriam Webster, is the field of technology concerned with the
design, manufacture, and use of robots in automation. Robotics is an interdisciplinary field
that draws on knowledge from a variety of disciplines, including mechanical engineering,
electrical engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence. A robot is a machine that
automatically completes difficult, frequently repetitive tasks. Robotics is a branch of
engineering and computer science that involves the design, construction, operation, and
application of robots. Robots are machines that can be programmed to perform tasks
automatically, either by receiving instructions from a human operator or by following pre-
programmed instructions.
The main aspects of robotics are:

 Robot design: This involves designing the robot's physical structure, actuators,
sensors, and control system.

 Robot programming: This involves programming the robot to perform specific tasks.

 Robot control: This involves controlling the robot's movement and behavior.

 Robot perception: This involves giving the robot the ability to sense and understand
its environment.

 Robot intelligence: This involves giving the robot the ability to make decisions and
learn.
APPLICATIONS
Robotics is a rapidly growing field with a wide range of applications. Robots are used in a
variety of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and agriculture. Robots
are also used in the military and for space exploration.
Here are some examples of robots and their applications:

 Industrial robots: Industrial robots are used in a variety of manufacturing tasks, such
as welding, painting, and assembly.

lives. As robots become more intelligent and capable, they are likely to play an increasingly
important role in society.

INTERDESCIPLINARY NATURE OF MECHATRONICS AND ROBOTICS

ROBOTICS MECHATRONICS

Merriam Webster defines robotics as Mechatronics is a superset of robotic

technology dealing with the design, technologies. The discipline is a study of
construction and operation of robots interaction between mechanical systems,
in automation electrical systems and control theory

Robotics and mechatronics are both interdisciplinary fields that combine knowledge and
methods from various disciplines.
Robotics involves the design, construction, operation, and use of robots. It draws on
knowledge from mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, control engineering,
and artificial intelligence. Mechanical engineering is important for designing the physical
structure and mechanisms of robots, while electronics and control engineering are necessary
for controlling their movements and behaviors. Computer science and artificial intelligence
play a role in programming robots and enabling them to perceive and interact with their
environment.
Mechatronics, on the other hand, focuses on the integration of mechanical engineering,
electronics, computer science, and control engineering to design and create intelligent
systems and products. It involves the development of systems that combine mechanical
components with electronic sensors, actuators, and control algorithms. Mechatronics
encompasses a wide range of applications, including robotics, automation, automotive
systems, aerospace systems, and consumer products.
The interdisciplinary nature of robotics and mechatronics is essential because it allows for the
development of complex systems that can perform tasks autonomously or with minimal
human intervention. By combining expertise from different fields, engineers and researchers
can leverage the strengths of each discipline to create innovative solutions that are efficient,
reliable, and intelligent.
ROBOTICS AS A SUBFIELD OF MECHATRONICS
Robotics is a subset of mechatronics because mechatronics is a broader field that
encompasses the design, development, and control of intelligent systems. Robotics is
specifically focused on the design, construction, operation, and application of robots.
Robots are mechatronic systems because they consist of mechanical components, electrical
components, and computer components that work together to achieve a goal. Robots are
typically programmed to perform specific tasks, but some robots are capable of learning and
adapting to their environment.
Mechatronics is essential for robotics because it provides the foundation for the design,
development, and control of robots. Mechatronics engineers use their knowledge of
mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and control systems
engineering to create intelligent robots that can perform complex tasks.
A mechatronic system is a system that combines mechanical, electrical, and computer
components to achieve a goal. Robots are mechatronic systems because they consist of all
three types of components. For example, a robot arm has mechanical components such as
joints and motors, electrical components such as sensors and actuators, and computer
components such as a microcontroller.
The microcontroller is responsible for controlling the robot arm's movement and behavior. It
receives data from the sensors and sends control signals to the actuators. The actuators then
move the robot arm's joints according to the control signals.
Robotics is a subset of mechatronics because it is concerned with the design, construction,
operation, and application of mechatronic systems. Robotics engineers use their knowledge
of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and control systems
engineering to create intelligent robots that can perform complex tasks.
Here are some examples of the relationship between robotics and mechatronics:

 Mechatronics engineers design and build the physical structure of robots, including
the actuators, sensors, and control systems.

 Mechatronics engineers develop the software that controls robots, including the
software that plans and executes robot movements and the software that enables
robots to interact with their environment.
 Mechatronics engineers integrate mechanical, electrical, and computer systems to
create robots that function as a whole.

 Mechatronics engineers test and evaluate robots to ensure that they meet performance
and safety requirements.
