1. Why is planning important in the assessment of the English communication

skills?

Assessment of English communication skills involves a process that must be clear and
organized. It involves standards that must be met along with rubrics as a guide. Hence,
planning is essential in the assessment of the English communication skills because it is
the basis in achieving the subject goals, provides clarity for teachers and gives directions
to students in terms of academic goals (DePaul, 2022).

For teachers, planning is not just a random task of putting activities together for
students to answer. Carefully constructing tasks for assessment must be
considered(Utas,2022). Not only that, rubrics for assessment must be reviewed. The
purpose of this is because each subject- English communication in this case, has a goal.
For most, the end point is for students to become fluent in English and to be proficient
users of that language as well. Thus, planning is like “beginning with the end in mind”
because when a teacher plans the assessment, there is a standard in mind to be met
which also matches with the goal of the subject. Planning ahead of time for assessment
does not only benefit teachers but students as well. If students are informed of the
standards that they need to meet, then they too can prepare for the coming weeks
ahead. Assessment that is laid out clearly to students will aid them in studying since they
know what areas will be given focus on. Hence, planning for assessment is very
important since it is a guide for students when they are presenting a written or a
performance task.

In a nutshell, planning serves as an imperative step in assessment because it guides both

teachers and students in their tasks through which they ultimately meet the goals of the
subject.
 2. What makes this course significant and relevant to you as an English educator?

Learning about assessment is always fun and challenging. As an English educator, this
course serves as an important guide for me to improve my knowledge about
assessment. In addition, this course also aids me in becoming more flexible in terms of
learning new styles to incorporate in making rubrics for my class.

This course is very timely because I am teaching two English subjects that require
students to write a lot. Moreover, having a subject about assessment helps me think of
new ways to assess my students in a clear and fair manner. In addition, I also get to
refresh my memory about standards and rubrics that have slipped my mind.

Overall, this course is very important to me as an English educator because it has

sparked my creativity in improving my skills in assessment and it has reminded me that
setting standards is very imperative in class so that the goals of the subject can be met.
