EFFECTS OF RADIOACTIVITY

Dangerous ionization by removing electrons from atoms which can

damage genetic material of a cell (the DNA) and lead to cancer
Deposition of large amounts of energy into the body which can damage
or destroy cells completely.
Damage to DNA which can cause acute Radiation Syndrome or
Cutaneous Radiation Injuries (CRI) and lead to cancer later in life
Damage to different body parts such as lungs reproductive organs skin
and bone marrow

EFFECTS THAT RADIATION HAS ON A HUMAN BODY

 Eyes; High doses on eyes cause cataracts
 Thyroid; Radioactive iodine can build up and cause cancer
particularly during growth
 Lungs; Breathing in radioisotope can sit in the stomach and
irradiate for long time.
 Reproductive organs; Radiation can cause sterility or mutations
 Skin; Radiation can burn skin or cause cancer
 Bone marrows; Radiation can cause leukemia and other diseases
of the blood
Note ;
Acute Radiation Syndrome(ARS); Sometimes known as radiation
toxicity or radiation sickness) is an acute illness caused by irradiation
of the entire body (or most of the body by high doses of penetrating
radiation in a very short period of time
Cutaneous radiation syndrome is caused due to exposure of the skin
from whole or partial body radiation which penetrates deeply into
tissues (e.g .gamma, neutrons )
