Performance Task in Physical Science

“StaTension Genggeng”
I. Demonstration of the Activity.

II. Five point Discussion of the Activity.

Relevance to Scientific Concepts

“StaTension Genggeng” is a simultaneous game where the participants will use static
electricity and liquids’ surface tension to perform the game correctly in just 9 minutes.

Execution/Organization
1) Before the game starts, the team should assign themselves to which part of the relay they
will take part (to maximize their participation). Preferably, there should only be 10
players for the needle game and 10 should also be playing the pipe game.
2) The team will shout “GENGGENG” if they are ready to start the game, so the facilitators
will start the 9 minute timer.
3) As the game starts, all participants will take part on their designated games
simultaneously.
4) The 10 participants for the needle game will try to use the surface tension of the water to
put 5 needles in each of the 3 basins. If one of the needles sinks on the process, they try
again until they successfully float 15 needles in total. Hand-ups if done, then they can
help their teammates on the pipe game.
5) The other 10 participants will try to get static electricity created by rubbing the pipe and
the silk cloth together to make 1 can of each of the 3 lanes to move to the designated
finish line. There must be 3 cans in total on the designated finish lines.
6) Team work, makes the dream work. Enjoy and have fun with your team!

Clarity and Attainability of Objectives

Move total of 3 cans to the finish lines using static electricity from the rubbed pipe.
Float total of 15 needles onto the basins using surface tension of the water.
Work simultaneously with your team.
Anyone could join and learn to perform this silly, focus-based science game.

Our group reused 9 soda/beer cans in total, recycled 1 meter of silk cloth, reused old
needles of our group members that they used on our last General Chemistry experiment, and
1
bought some extras; and bought 5 meters of blue pipe at a hardware because our group
2
members doesn’t have at home.

Uniqueness
Most students may find our game silly and really fun especially during the pipe game,
where you rub the pipe with the silk cloth to create static electricity. The movement they were
making (if you’re green minded) are considered silly/naughty because the action is like they are
“ejaculating their male genitals”, that is why the participants (even the facilitators) were laughing
all throughout the game.

III. Three Paragraph Explaining the Relevance to Science Concepts and Your Participation.

"StaTension Genggeng" is a simultaneous game in which players must complete the task
in 9 minutes using static electricity and the surface tension of liquids.

In the needle game, players will attempt to make five needles float in each of the three
basins by manipulating the surface tension of the water. Due to the cohesive nature of its
molecules, surface tension is a feature of liquids that enables them to resist an external force.
This is an intriguing unique physical characteristic of liquids. Since molecules move freely in a
liquid, water has a high surface tension, which keeps an object like a needle stationary on the
water's surface by allowing hydrogen bonds to form.

In the pipe game, participants will try to create static electricity by rubbing the pipe and
silk fabric together to make the can move, there are 3 lanes you need to move 1 cans in each of
the lanes towards the finish line. Static electricity is an imbalance in electrical charge on the
surface of a material or between materials that occurs when electrons move toward another
material, which can cause that material to move. The unbalanced charges between the silk fabric
and the pipe due to static electricity are transferred into the cans, causing it to move so that the
pipe carries it to the finish line. This works like magic!

My role/contribution in our game is aim the one assigned to facilitate in the needle game,
I gave instructions, cleaning my area and preparing it for the next players, and making sure and
reminding them to have caution for them to not get hurt. I also help in preparing our room and
the things that we need for the game and helping my team in keeping the players discipline and
making sure that they have fun.
