As a multi-country chapter, we have several Schools of Nursing across the

Caribbean. We wanted to highlight a few as we shared more about our chapter’s
countries. For this edition we share one school each from Jamaica, Trinidad &
Tobago and The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. All nursing students across the
Caribbean (except at the University of the Bahamas – they are in the process of
doing so) currently sit the Regional Examination for Nursing Registration [RENR] to
obtain their license to practice nursing once they have completed their nursing
training. Please enjoy our islands.

The authors for each of the three schools are listed below the information.

Colleague colaboration and mentoring

for nursing leadership: A perspective
from the Nursing Now Challenge
By Daniel A. Guerrero and Geraldine Jimenez

How to chart a new way of experiencing

the practice of nursing?

To answerthis question, the following definitions will be made.

Leadership in nursing includes autonomy in practice, knowledge-based decision

making, correct problemsolving and assertive communication with the
interdisciplinary team.

Colleagueship is understood as solidarity and support in the professional practice,

in the case of nursing it is essential to lead the provision of health services, since
one of the greatest challenges is to provide human, warm and quality care.

For the correct exercise of the science of care, the organizational climate is a
determining factor, which is determined by the working conditions, the structure
of the processes, but especially by the functioning of the work team. When this is
fragmented or weak, the result tends to be blurred. Therefore, it is necessaryto
have a joint, collaborative and demanding exercise that allows the growth and
strengthening of the nursing profession and the creation of trust networks.

It is necessary to develop and strengthen these skills in nursing human talent to

transform theirglobal vision, recognition and visibility in society.

At this point it is worth mentioning the impact of training processes such as the
Nursing Now Challenge, which is committed to forging sick transformational
leaders in the world. One of the pillars of this training is mentoring, which is
understood as a fundamental process for the development and sustainability of
society. The Nursing Now Challenge, in addition to promoting leadership in
recently graduatedprofessionals, uses mentoringas a tool for leadership
succession, empowerment, appropriation of the profession and evolution.

Colleague colaboration and mentoring

for nursing leadership: A perspective
from the Nursing Now Challenge
By Daniel A. Guerrero and Geraldine Jimenez

Mentoring does not require a person who is an "expert" in a specific subject, but
rather a person who has already gone through certain stages and circumstances,
which allows guiding and directingthose who are just startingthe process. To
exemplify mentoring, let us think like a flower grower: The growers are the
mentors, the seeds are the mentees; the water and nutrients are all the knowledge
and experiences that can be transferred. The seeds, which are all those people who
have the potential to grow, develop and strengthen their abilities, being out in the
open, can germinate despite the rough conditions in which they are exposed;
however, those conditions are not ideal. If those same seeds are in a seedbed, with
more favorableconditions, less coarse and with adequate water, nutrients and
light, they can germinate in a better way.

However, the process is not unidirectional; mentors also receive and learn from the
seeds. They receive learning from mistakes made, the happiness of seeing the
seeds grow and strengthen, the satisfaction of a job well done, among so many
other possibilities, unique to being.

Mentoring in nursing should transcend academia and become involved in clinical

practice. Nursing professionals are born leaders in their services, being the
professionals responsible for programmanagement, health care management of
their patients, information management, being the communication bridge
between the family and other health professionals, among others. Despite this
leading role, there is not always collegiality among professionals, but rather they
look for ways to overcome each other. This unhealthy competition affects the
health care provided, the appropriation of the role as a professional, the
recognition as a profession, among many others.

As Sigma members, leaders in nursing, we must be an example for our colleagues

to follow, not only with words, but with concrete actions and collegiality, through
the pillars of our society: Love, Courage and Honor.

conference "Be BOLD: Lessons learned and accomplishments" by Dr. Kenneth

Dion, President of Sigma, who spoke about how nursing must actively collaborate
with other disciplines to influence decisions about the profession, populations and
the planet through three domains of dialogue: economics, technology and
conservation. In these pillars nursing professionals must be bold and collectively
raise their voices to inspire and lead the way in education, research and models
ofcare.

Afterwards, the chapter leaders participated in the panel discussion "From Call to
Action: Boldness of the Latin American and Caribbean Region" where each one
shared how they have responded to this call throughvarious activities, such as
participation in social and philanthropic activities, the development of conservation
or mentoring actions, the creation of educational material and research
development. They also expressed the importance of global representation of
nursing, sharing experiences and collaborative work between chapters, their
members and those who do not belong to Sigma. The next plenary to be
highlighted were the experiences of Sigmain the world, with the participation of Dr.
Marie-Louise Luiking, former regional coordinator of the European Region of
Sigma, who presented how excellence in nursing is evidenced in the European
Region and Aimée Horcasitas, registered nurse, who commented on how
excellence in nursing is as a young representative of Sigma to the United Nations.

Similarly, Dr. Nancy Rollins' plenary on mentoring in nursing was highlighted,

where she emphasized how the face of nursing can be transformed through a
mentoring approach and defined it as a process in which more experienced people
support the development of others outside the normal lines of relationships. This
has specific elements including voluntariness, both formal and informal structure,
and the intention to share knowledge, teach, encourage and nurture both the
mentee and the mentor through the alliance of two minds to create synergyand a
relationship of mutualtrust. Dr. Rollinsconcludes by invitingprofessionals and
students to empower themselves and get involved in mentoring either as a mentor
or mentee because it is absolutely necessary for the profession as it aids in problem
solving, enhances diversity and inclusion, development of hard and soft skills,
