We are writing to you to share more information on the situation that occurred in the
neighborhood near the East Kentwood High School campus earlier today. This situation,
while unrelated to the district, required that we take safety precautions at East Kentwood
High School, Freshman Campus, and Pinewood Middle School right before dismissal.
Our school safety team, including our School Resource Officers from the Kent County
Sheriff’s Office, received information of an incident near a store in the area. We
immediately followed district protocols to ensure the safety of our students. This involved
going into lockdown mode for roughly 5 minutes at East Kentwood High School. Pinewood
Middle School also went into lockdown mode at this time.
As more information regarding the incident became available, we transitioned into secure
mode, which means we were able to allow our students and staff to continue with their
activities while remaining safely inside our building. Because the situation in the
neighborhood was taking place at dismissal time for the high school, we delayed dismissal
in order to keep all students and staff in the building until advised by law enforcement that
all was safe. Once that happened, we resumed daily activities, which included school
dismissal.
At no time was there a direct threat to our buildings or our campus. Our priority is always
the safety of our students, and so working together with law enforcement, we took steps to
make sure that everyone remained secure inside buildings on the East Kentwood campus.
Special thanks to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office for their work and support. We
appreciate our ongoing partnership with them. Working together, we have clear lines of
communication to keep our school community safe. Special thanks to our school staff,
including our bus drivers, students, and parents for their patience as these events delayed
transportation at the end of the day.
These types of situations can be difficult for students to process. Should you need
resources to talk with your students about this situation, please feel free to go to the
following link:https://www.kentwoodps.org/ourdistrict/tips-for-parents/. In addition, if
your child needs additional support, please contact our building principals or other trusted
adults at school.
We are appreciative of how our students, staff, and families responded during this event
creating a calm atmosphere while law enforcement ensured the area was safe. This event
demonstrated the capability of the community to effectively respond to difficult situations.
As was demonstrated today, school safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we could not be
more proud of everyone’s response.
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
evin Polston
