Introduction

Is there another way to fold T-shirts?

Yes, there is, although apparently the most efficient way to pack is to roll
everything up--but that's entirely another story.

The aim for this session is to demonstrate skills and knowledge required to Fold
T-shirt in Japanese style.

At first, I'll do it normal so you can see how it's usually done. Then, I'll do it again
with step-by-step explanation. Then we'll do it together so you can mirror what I do. After
you've understood the steps, I'll give you time to practice on your own. Then after the
practice, when you're confident enough, I will assess you on whether you are competent
in doing the proper procedure.

The criteria for the assessment are the following:

1. Demonstrate folding t-shirt in Japanese style as instructed.

2. Complete folding 10 T-shirts within 1.5 minutes..
3. Present to professional industry standard
*Linen not crumpled
*Even square shape with collar in the centre
*Less than 2 cm variance in length or width between folded t-shirts

Achieving Learning Objectives

The learning objectives were met except the second criteria. Trainees did not meet
the desired time. I based competency based on the following Key Performance Indicators
(KPI's):

1. Demonstrate folding t-shirt in Japanese style as instructed.

2. Complete folding 10 T-shirts within 1.5 minutes..
3.Present to professional industry standard
*Linen not crumpled
*Even square shape with collar in the centre
*Less than 2 cm variance in length or width between folded t-shirts

Strengths

Well organized resources (3 tables, 3 T-shirts to demonstrate to the trainees, and

20 t-shirts divided equally to the 2 trainees), and clear explanation of the objectives and
criteria for assessment worked well. It helped the training successfully, since it gave the
trainees a clear understanding of what they are going to do, to know the application of this
style of folding, to be competent, and how to do it in a timely manner.

Areas of Improvement

The only area of weakness that I ever noted was the standard time set. It was very
challenging for the trainees since they have just learned the particular skill to fold the
t-shirts in Japanese style, it was difficult for them to acquire and apply the new skill at a
fast pace. It would have been better if they were given ample time to practice.

Recommendations

Based on the actual performance of the two trainees, instead of 1.5 minutes,
trainees should have been given the standard time of two minutes, reasonable enough to
fold 10 t-shirts.

Monitor and Report on Progress

As the trainer, I would make sure to give emphasis on the following:

*That I know each trainee by name and make them feel like an important part of
an organization.
*I would encourage supervisors to keep a closer eye on the trainees, and ask
that they ensure trainees feel welcome and are not bullied or intimidated.

*I would also give them an overview of the industry, and what their role is
within the company. I let them see the "bigger picture."
*I would also use "buddy up system" in which the trainee gets to work closely
with a senior/ experienced worker.
*Monitor trainees for problems such as fatigue, muscle soreness, strains.

If I can catch the signs early of any of these occurring and move them to another
job or allow them to take a break the company increases its chances of that trainees
coming back to work the next day.

To report on their improvement, I would inform their respective managers or

supervisors by giving them the Training Assessment Sheet, and the feedback given by
their buddy in the production area. Furthermore, the trainees would know how they are
doing, from the training to the production area.

Identify Performance Problems or Difficulties

Based on the performance of the two coaches, I could say that they lack the
resources, and confidence in delivering or giving instructions on their respective training
sessions. I highly recommend to practice reciting their learning objectives and
competency criteria since it will have a great impact on the overall outcome of the
session. I would be glad to refer them to the training manager or expert on improving their
skills.

Conclusion

In summary, it is vital to review the effectiveness of the training in the workplace to

know how successful is the trainees' training, to make a good impression on them, to
provide them with the necessary support and guidance (on their strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities, and threats) in order to retain them, thereby increasing workforce
productivity.
