Activity 2 – Self, Society and Culture

1. Answer the following questions cogently but honestly.

a. How would you describe yourself?

I describe myself as an ambitious person and driven. I thrive on challenges and constantly set
goals for myself,
so I have something to strive forward.

b. What are the influences of family and other social institutions in your development as an
individual?

In my life the influences of my family and other social institutions by friends, teachers, idols
but most significant is family,
My family influenced me positively and negatively as individual today, positively is they
taught me what is life and how’s life working
Negatively is they down me like comparing to other person.

c. Think of a time when you felt you were your “true self.” What made you think you were
truly who you are during this time of your life?

There were numerous occasions when I felt as though I wasn't being who I really am in some
settings.
You might be a member of some organizations for a considerable amount of time. But
honestly, even though I used to overthink my behavior a little,
it never really troubled me since I never gave it that much priority in my life.

d. Following the question above, can you provide a time when you felt you were not living your
“true self”? Why you have to live a life like that? What did you do about it?

It started happening when I was in elementary school until a while ago. My mother was a
OFW, they expected me to to follow their footsteps because of life
But I prefer to study nursing here and not to go overseas. What did I do about it? When I
graduated SHS I ventured and tell my parents that I don’t want to be a OFW but
To study nursing here in my country.

e. What social pressures help shape yourself? Would you have wanted it otherwise?

Peer pressure to perform well or face judgment from my peers, and academic pressure to
perform well or face failure.
I developed a competitive nature as a result of these pressures, and being competitive causes
me to become meticulous,
especially when it comes to my academic performance because of the anxiety I feel about
disappointing my mother and being evaluated by others if I fail my subjects.
I set my goals higher, which motivates me to work more and perform better. When I
accomplish my goals or reach my aim,
I am happier and more satisfied. Even though these demands cause me tension and anxiety,
I still wanted them since they will help me succeed and will undoubtedly help me become a
better person.

f. What aspects of your self do you think may be changed or you would like to change?

Was more of an aesthetic girl because I knew that if I didn't take care of my face, hair, and
body, I wouldn't look well and would later have to blame my past for not looking good.

2. Write down (3) three social institutions that you think have big effects on your concept of your
“self”. Then, write down what those effects are (i.e., attitude, behavior, expression, likes and
dislikes, beliefs, and so on).

expression.
b. Education- education helps to socialize by teaching them the norms, values, and beliefs of
their culture. Education effects are attitude, behavior, expression.
C. Religion- is an organized system of beliefs and practices designed to fill the human need for
