BME3204 Instrumentation and Control (Assignment 1)

1. The automatic control system for the temperature of a bath of liquid consists of a
reference voltage fed into a differential amplifier. This is connected to a relay which
then switches on or off the electrical power to a heater in the liquid. Negative
feedback is provided by a measurement system which feeds a voltage into the
differential amplifier. Sketch a block diagram of the system and explain how the
error signal is produced.
2. Explain the significance of the following information given in the specification of
transducers:

(a) Ranges: 70 to 1000 kPa, 2000 to 70 000 kPa

(b) Supply voltage: 10 V d.c.
(c) Full range output: 40 mV
(d) Non-linearity and hysteresis: ±0.5% of full range output
(e) Temperature range: -54°Cto +1200C when operating
() Thermal zero shift: 0.030% of full range output/°C
3. A pressure sensor consisting of a diaphragm with strain gauges bonded to its surface
has the following information in its specification:
Ranges: 0to 1400kPa, 0 to 35 000 kPa
Non-linearity eror: t0.15% of full range
Hysteresis eror: t 0.5% of full range
What is the total error due to non-linearity and hysteresis for a reading of 1000 kPa
on the Oto 1400 kPa range?
