History: Lihir and New Ireland Province

Lihir exists within a wider network in New Ireland Province of trade

through exchange and marriage
History: Putput 1980

Before the mine Now

• Note the changes to the landscape, and the pre-mining level of development in Putput
• The small settlement in the ‘before the mine’ image (where the plant site is now
located) was relocated to make way for the mine.
Lihir Culture: Men’s Houses

Men’s houses are known in Lihirian as

rihri or hausboi in Tok Pisin and are
the centrepiece of Lihirian culture

• Traditional male leadership is based

within the men’s house
• Deceased clan members are buried
within the confines of the men’s house
• Traditional knowledge is taught in the
men’s house

• Important ceremonial feasts and

exchanges are regularly performed
inside the men’s house
• They are a place for providing hospitality
to guests

Women are not permitted to enter a

NB men’s house unless they belong to
the clan who owns the men’s house
Lihir Culture: Sacred Sites

Sacred Sites are normally associated with a powerful spiritual being, known as a
tandal or masalai

• There are many different types of sacred sites in Lihir

• Each clan has their own spirit being and sacred sites, which are a traditional source
of power for the clan

Examples of Sacred Sites are:

Men’s houses Restricted or taboo

Cemeteries Ailaya Rock
(rihri or hausboi) areas (mok)
Lihir Culture: The Gorgor

The Gorgor is a traditional

Lihirian taboo marker made
from a ginger plant.

It serves two key purposes:

1. Traditional dispute handling

mechanism
2. Symbol to indicate that
something, or an area, is
restricted or taboo

The Gorgor is common to many

coastal communities throughout
Gorgor placed around a coconut Melanesia and the wider Pacific
trunk symbolising a taboo marker region.
Lihir Culture: The Gorgor

Newcrest’s position on the use of the

Gorgor:

• The Mineral Resources authority (the state

regulator of the mining industry) issued a
public notice that the gorgor is illegal under
the PNG Mining Act

• Newcrest respects the gorgor but does not

endorse it

• Newcrest is expected to continue to

operate the plant and mine at a minimum
rate so as not to put people at risk in
accordance with the PNG Mine Safety Act
Lihir Culture: The Gorgor

What do you do when you see a Gorgor?

Do not touch or remove

Report it immediately to your Supervisor or Manager

Community Relations team will discuss and resolve with
