TOEFL is an acronym for Test of English as a Foreign which is used to measure a
person's ability in English. This test is a registered test service from ETS (Educational Testing Service) which has been around since 1947 in the United States. The uses of this test are many, from registering for school to registering for a job. However, the minimum score given will be adjusted to the needs of the agency. There are three types of TOEFL tests, namely the international TOEFL test, institutional TOEFL test and TOEFL Like-Test. These three types of TOEFL have different validity periods and uses. The International TOEFL test will use new questions in each test and has a validity period of two years. This test is accepted at universities all over the world and can also be used to apply for scholarships abroad. The institutional TOEFL test questions will be based on previous year questions from the international TOEFL test. The validity period of this test is only six months and the cost is lower. However, it cannot be used to apply to outside universities but some scholarship requirements allow this type of test. TOEFL Like-Test is also based on questions from previous years from the international TOEFL test. This type of test cannot be used to apply to study abroad and can only be used to fulfill the requirements of several universities in Indonesia and has no validity period. TOEFL Functions and Uses The following are some of the functions and uses of TOEFL: 1. University Entrance Requirements When registering to study abroad or at home, there are several universities that require TOEFL to determine each student's English language skills. Domestic universities will require a minimum score of 450 and foreign universities will require a minimum score of 600. 2. Job Application Requirements Currently, several corporate agencies require applicants to take the TOEFL test first. English language skills will provide added value for applicants, especially in international companies. 3. Requirements for Obtaining a Scholarship Institutions providing scholarships, especially overseas scholarships, often require a TOEFL test for applicants in addition to academic and non-academic qualifications. This is intended so that prospective scholarship recipients are not hampered by the language of instruction during lectures. TOEFL Types and Formats The following are the types and formats of the TOEFL test issued by ETS:
1. Paper-based Test (PBT)
This form of test is the first test issued by ETS. This test is very popular in educational institutions and language institutes. The system will use question papers and answer sheets which must be filled in using a 2B pencil. However, in the international scope, TOEFL PBT is no longer used, but this type of test is still widely used in Indonesia. The duration of this test is three hours with four sessions, namely listening, structure and written expression, reading and writing. And has a value or score range from 310 to 677. 2. Computer-based Test (CBT) This type of test uses a computer as the testing medium. Currently, many people are using this type of test as a substitute for the TOEFL PBT test. The processing time is 2-2.5 hours with the material being tested on listening, structure and written expression and listening. The score range for this test is from 0 to 300. 3. iBT (internet Based Test) TOEFL The TOEFL test is an internet-based test and is recognized globally.
