Advantages and Disadvantages of Screwed Joints

Advantages
1.Screwed joints are highly reliable in operation.

2. Screwed joints are convenient to assemble and

disassemble.

3. A wide range of screwed joints may be adopted to

various operating conditions.

4. Screws are relatively cheap to produce due to

standardisation and highly efficient manufacturing
processes.
Disadvantages
The main disadvantage of the screwed joints is the stress
concentration in the threaded portions which are Vulnerable
points under variable load conditions.

Q: initial tightening force F: tensile force

i : (no. of plates -1) µ :coefficient of friction

Example 1.

The cover of a pressure vessel is held by ten M15 bolts. The

pressure is 15 Kp/mm2 and the effective area of the cover
exposed to the pressure is 1400 cm2 . Each bolt is tightened
initially before the pressure is applied to 2000 Kp.

A)Will the joint separate as a result of the load due to internal

pressure?

B)If the joint dose not separate, determine the axial stress in
each bolt due to the axial load. (Take Cb= 0.4, Cj= 0.19).
Given:
Z : 10 (Number of bolts)

do : 15 mm (M15)
P : 15 Kp/cm2

Acover: 1400 cm 2

Q : 2000 Kp
cb : 0.4 , cJ : 0.19
Solution:
A)Separation will occurs when
Dropping in tightening force in the joint = initial tightening force
Q
No separation
B)

From table at do =16 mm di= 13.402 mm
