Application
A Faulted Circuit Indicator (FCI) is mandatory to locate faults on Distribution
PE55561
networks. It must fulfill all customer needs and be very visible in order to help
maintenance crew to quickly locate network faults.
A FCI must be coordinated with the upstream recloser or circuit breaker
and therefore, depending on its location on the MV network, the trigger value
may change.
b If needed be, Flite 11x-SA is adjustable on site thanks to its embedded
dip-switches.
b One single product therefore covers all customer requirements.
A FCI is always able to indicate permanent faults, but utilities are often interested
to track transient faults as well (a fault is transient when the upstream protection
device eliminates the fault and successfully recloses).
b Flite 110-SA offers both facilities with the same unit, flashing differently
upon permanent faults and transient faults but with the same flash power.
This feature is user adjustable.
b One single product therefore covers these two applications.
Fault detection
Flite 11x-SA is fitted with two sensors, one measuring the magnetic field
(image of the current) and one measuring the electric field (image of the voltage).
A fault is either a passing over a absolute current threshold (Imax) or a current
variation (di/dt ).
b Detects both short-circuits
and low current earth faults
b Self adaptation to network voltage Operation
and frequency Upon installation on a live conductor, Flite 11x-SA adjusts itself to power frequency
and network voltage, then enables its fault detection function.
b Highly visible red flash light Fault types: Flite 11x-SA detects and indicates both earth faults and short-circuits
between phases. In addition Flite 110-SA indicates both permanent and transient
b Indicates both permanent faults.
and transient faults (Flite 110-SA) Fault confirmation: to avoid false indications, faults are confirmed with a voltage
dip occurring within 70 s after the threshold has been reached, which indicates that
b User adjustable the upstream protection system has opened the circuit or started a reclosing cycle.
Inrush restraint: upon line energising, a inrush restraint filter avoids possible false
fault indication due to transformer magnetising currents.
Reset: once a permanent fault has been detected and flashing has started, upon
power return, Flite 11x-SA waits for the MV to stabilise before resetting its flash,
thus avoiding to stop flashing if the fault has not been cleared.
Transient fault evolution: once Flite 110-SA is busy flashing for a transient fault,
if a permanent fault occurs, the flash fault indication automatically changes from
transient to permanent, thus helping the maintenance crew to treat fault priorities
(first permanent faults, then transient ones).
