2
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind.

It is here to help you get information from news reports, speeches, informative
talks, panel discussions, and many other more that can be used in everyday
life. The scope of this module permits it to be used in varied reading activities.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But
the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the
textbook you are now using.
The module is divided into two lessons, namely:
• Lesson 1 – Information Gathering through Noting for Specific
Details
• Lesson 2 – Scanning and Skimming to Gather and Locate
Required Information

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. note for specific details or information;

2. summarize information through words and graphic organizers;
3. scan for facts;
4. get information that can be used in everyday life by skimming;
5. explain the importance of information gathering for everyday life
usage.

3
Lesson Information Gathering
1 through Noting for
Specific Details

What’s In

One of your major responsibilities is to gather information related to the

subjects that you are studying. You read your textbooks, watch informative
medias and even listen to news reports in order to fully understand not only
your academic topics but as well as what’s happening around you.
Information gathering is the act of getting varied kinds of information
for a particular reason or purpose. The type of information you are trying to
obtain, as well as the people or other resources providing the information will
determine which techniques you should use.
The common methods in gathering information are the following:

1. reading
2. interviews
3. questioning
4. questionnaires
5. observation
6. study of existing reports

Notes to the Teacher

Prior to understanding the lesson on information gathering through noting for
specific details , the students are given a brief background on the general
meaning of information gathering. The students should be able to discern that
information gathering is significant in all aspects of human life.

4
What’s New

Activity: Note for Specific Details

Gather information by reading the news report below and then answer the
questions that follow on a separate paper.

RIGHT INSTINCTS
Other cases to be reviewed by the new committee will be the death
sentence of the rapist whose victims have forgiven him.
This study was apparently prompted by the recent execution of Eduardo
Agbayani, who was convicted of raping his own daughters. On the eve of his
execution, his victims announced that they had already forgiven him and
pleaded his life be spared. They had suffered enough and they didn’t want
their father’s death to weigh on their conscience they said.
The study will obviously be too late to save Agbayani. While Mr. Estrada
wanted to give him reprieve, the order to stop the execution could not be
relayed on time because the phone in the execution chamber wasn’t working.
But such cases certainly merit some serious thought for reasons brought out
dramatically by the appeal of the Agbayani sisters. The sisters were saying
in effect that after the trauma of the rape, they don’t want to be victimized a
second time by being haunted by the guilt feelings about their father’s death.
This raises the questions of whether it is fair for the state to impose its own
brand of justice? If it insists on carrying out the extreme penalty, the
probability is high that many victims will simply hide the crime rather than
feel responsible for their abuser’s death, particularly if he happens to be a
brother, a father, or a grandfather.
In this issue, Mr. Estrada’s instincts are pointing him in the right direction.
Perhaps he should trust them even more than the advice of his committee,
whose members lean toward a strict application of the law rather than a more
liberal exercise of clemency.

6
What is It

Reading for details is the easiest skill to learn and the most utilized
information gathering technique by students like you. It is a practice of
reading information from another source. When you note details in gathering
information, you often prove a point, find specific details and even solve a
problem. This skill also enables us to distinguish significant details. Moreover,
gathering information by noting details is a great help not only for academic
purposes but also when you need urgent information in relation to everyday
life requirements.
The methods that you can use to effectively note details for information are
Cornell Method, outlining method and mind mapping.
I. The Cornell method is used by dividing the paper in two columns. The
first column is used to enter key or cue words while the second is the notes
column for recording ideas and facts. (No citation)
Additional Information
The CORNELL METHOD OF NOTE TAKING

What is the Cornell Method of note taking?

• A method of recording, organizing and using the notes you take in in

class or from your textbook or readings
• A time-tested method with a great record of success, developed at Cornell
University.

What would I use the Cornell Method for?

• Recording information from lectures or texts

• Recording comments, questions, or thoughts about this information
• Summarizing the main ideas in your notes
• Integrating notes from lectures and textbooks or readings
• Studying your notes for tests and exams and testing your understanding.

How does the Cornell Method work?

• Divide the page into three sections:

1. a large column on the right side of the page

2. a smaller column on the left side of the page
3. a short row at the bottom of the page

7
• The column on the right is used for lecture or text notes
o Record your notes during the lecture as you normally would, and
review after the class to add in any missed information
• The column on the left is the “cue” column
o Record questions here based on the main ideas in the lecture notes
o Test your understanding by covering the lecture notes and
answering the questions in the cue column
• The bottom section is used for a summary of the notes on that page

Electrons are tiny particles that revolve around the nucleus or center of
atoms. Each electron carries a very small charge of negative electricity. An
electric current is a flow of electrons moving from one place to another.
Electrons always flow from high negative pressure areas to areas of lower
negative pressures. They do not always need to flow along the wire but may
jump across a gap if the pressure difference is high enough.

Column 1 Column 2

• Main Idea: Electrons are tiny particles that revolve

8
Outlining Method organizes information into main topic and sub topic
through numbers, roman numerals and letters.
Some suggested ways in outlining:
1. Use only one form of outline, either number letter sequence or decimal
sequence.
Number letter Sequence: Decimal Sequence:
I. Food 1. Choose desired college university
A. Vegetables 1.1. Visit and evaluate college
B. Fruits campuses
1.Vegetables 1.2. visit and evaluate college websites
a. Cabbage 1.2.1. Look for interesting classes.
1.2.2. Note important statistics.
b. Broccoli
2. Fruits
a. Apple
b. Mango

2. Write related topics in parallel construction.

Not parallel:
I. The first part of the race came out according to predictions.
II. The excitement of a race is its unpredictability, as indicated by the
second part.
Parallel:
I. The first part of the race came out according to predictions.
II. The second part went contrary to predictions.

3. See to it that each topic should have more than just one sub topic or
none at all.

Incorrect:
I. Planning a party can be both enjoyable and tiring.
A. The guest list must be made and the invitations be mailed.
II. The day of the party is the most hectic.
III. Cleaning up after the party is no fun.
Correct:
I. Planning a party can be both enjoyable and tiring.
A. The guest list must be made and the invitations
be mailed.
B. The recreational activities must be worked out. II.
The day of the party has the most hectic schedule.

9
4. Classify your materials accurately into major and subordinate topics.
Do not place a subordinate topic in the same ranking as a major topic
and vice versa.
Incorrect:
I. My young brother has a self-acquired knowledge on different
machines.
A. He can build a model airplane.
B. He can repair an automobile motor.
C. He can put it together again.
D. He can repair a tractor.
Note: The topic which is inappropriately ranked is letter C, which should
belong as a subtopic under B. A, B, and D belong under the category of
different machines mentioned in the main topic.
Correct:
I. My young brother has a self-acquired knowledge on different
machines.
A. He can build a model airplane.
B. He can repair an automobile motor.
1. He can put it together again.
2. He has worked on different automobile motors so far.
C. He can repair a tractor.

5. Do not overload your outline.

Incorrect:
I. I made preparations carefully, since a visit to grandfather’s did not
happen everyday, and also because the vacation promised to be full
of opportunities for outdoor activities.
Better:
I. I made preparations carefully.

Mind Mapping Method is the method to see the main idea and how

COVID-19: Too Little, Too Late?

Although WHO has yet to call the outbreak of SARS-Cov2 infection a

pandemic, it has confirmed that the virus is likely to spread to most, if not all
countries. Regardless of terminology, this latest coronavirus epidemic is now
seeing larger increases in cases outside China. As of March 3, more than
90,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in 73 countries. The
outbreak in northern Italy, which has seen 11 towns officially locked down and
residents threatened with imprisonment if they try to leave, shocked European
political leaders. Their shock turned to horror as they saw Italy become the
epicenter for further spread across the continent. As the window for global

11
containment closes, health ministers are scrambling to implement appropriate
measures to delay the spread of the virus. But their actions have
been slow and insufficient. There is now real danger that countries have done
too little, too late to contain the epidemic.

Computer viruses are scary. If an attacker gets control of your computer, they
can snoop through your files, steal your sensitive information, and even use
your computer’s webcam and microphone to spy on you. But just because
there are scary things on the Internet, doesn’t mean that we should stay off of
the Internet. Instead, practice safe habits such as installing virus protection.
Virus protection will not protect you against all attacks, but it may stop the
most common ones. It also helps to keep your software up to date. Software
updates close security holes. By installing updates from software providers,
you will have a stronger system. Perhaps the most important thing that you
can do is to be smart about how you browse. Don’t click on suspicious links
and don’t open attached files unless you are expecting them. The Internet can
be a dangerous place, but you’ll be safer if you take a few precautions. Happy
browsing!

Buying a computer can be a frightening and overwhelming task, but
don't let that prevent you from getting the right one. The first thing that
you have to do is figure out which one you want. Start by researching on
the internet: read reviews and compare features. Decide what's important
to you and how much you are willing to pay. Once you have found the right
computer, it is time to compare prices. Search by the model number of the
computer. Check prices from at least three websites before you make your
purchase, and don't forget to factor in the cost of shipping and handling.
Also Google the name of the website on which you are planning to buy the
computer and read reviews to make sure that they are reputable before
placing your order. If it looks good, enter your information, await your
shipment, and enjoy your new computer!

Deaf-mute Negros man shows appreciation to BTS for using

sign language in ‘Permission to Dance’ MV
By: Ves Garcia INQUIRER.net / 05:32 PM July 14,
2021

A 33-year-old deaf-mute man from Negros Occidental expressed his

appreciation to the South Korean boy group BTS for incorporating sign
language in the choreography of its new single “Permission to Dance.”

In a trending TikTok video uploaded by user @leevouge20 on Monday, July

12, her brother Richmond P. Alberto can be seen closely watching on their
television the music video of the K-pop idols’ new track.

14
“He is absorbing it very well. This is my brother who is deaf and mute.
Please watch until the end,” Xandra Lee P. Alberto, the owner of the TikTok
account, captioned her post along with the hashtags #permissiontodance,
#bts_official_bighit and #btsarmy.

One TikTok user, Ember Parpa, who is a deaf rights advocate, noticed
Alberto’s video and left a comment about her interpretation of Richmond’s
hand gestures.

“He said, ‘They are talking about dance. I like BTS more. It’s good that they
included (he signed tagged). They [are] always good in dancing, I observed,”
Parpa wrote.

The video, which was noticed by ARMYs, has already earned over 68,500
likes, 1,344 comments and 748 shares on TikTok as of this writing. It was
also shared by BTS’ local fan base, ARMY Cavite, on its Facebook account
on Monday, July 12.

In an interview with INQUIRER.net, Alberto, who is currently residing in

Makati City, said she just requested her sister Lexlyn P. Alberto to film
their brother’s reaction while watching the music video from their house in
Negros Occidental.

“He’s a lowkey fan of BTS. As for me, I just started being a fan last March,
while my daughter, as well as my niece, has been an ARMY since 2018.
The three of us are really diehard fans,” Alberto added.
Alberto also said she could not determine when exactly her brother became
a fan of BTS since he often watches the group’s music videos due to the
poor internet connection in their province. However, she said Richard loves
the group’s songs “Dynamite” and “Butter” as he is fond of dancing.

When further asked what his brother’s reaction was after watching BTS’
new song’s music video, Alberto said: “He is very thankful and he told my
mom that the BTS is thoughtful for adding sign language to their
choreography in ‘Permission to Dance.’”

For Alberto, she was really a proud ARMY fan because BTS is “not just an
idol but a great example to the youth.”

“They tell us that there’s no language barrier when it comes to music. We

can all enjoy and understand, that’s why I stan them [so much].”

15
Of the four siblings in their family, Alberto said that two of them have
disabilities. One is her brother Richmond and the other is their youngest
sibling adopted by their parents, who went blind in one eye due to an
accident.

Meanwhile, Alberto said her brother has been practicing the group’s dance
steps. She intends to post another video of Richard’s performance once it
is sent to her. Further, she hopes that BTS will get to see her brother’s
video, and she won’t mind if the video does not elicit any reaction or
comment from the group.
BTS’ ‘Permission to Dance’
The phenomenal septet superstars’ third all-English language track
“Permission to Dance” was released last July 9 to celebrate the eighth
anniversary of their global fandom known as ARMY, which is an acronym
for “Adorable Representative MC for Youth.”

What I Can Do

Activity: Inform Me More

Read a reliable Direction: Gather information from the text using any of
the three methods you have just learned.

Not all bugs slither and crawl. A bug can also be an error in a computer
program. When a computer tries to read a program with a bug in it, the
bug will affect the computer in one of two ways: the computer may process
the error and continue running the program. In this case the bug only has
a small effect on the computer; however, if the computer cannot process
the error, then the bug will cause the computer to freeze and crash. This
will require the user to restart the program or the computer. Bugs are
pesky to computer programmers and users.
Viruses can mess up computers and make them run slowly. If you’ve
ever gotten a virus on your computer, you may have wondered why
someone would go through all of that trouble just to ruin your computer.
There are two reasons why people spread viruses: money and power. If
someone infects your computer with a virus, they can make money by
stealing your sensitive information and selling it to identity thieves. Or,
they can gain power by using your computer to attack other computers
and websites to take them offline. Your computer makes an attractive
target to cybercriminals because they can use it to gain money and power.

Information

What’s In

In the present-day society, there is a great and urgent need for access
and availability of accurate information because it is an aid in decision
making, policy making or simply increasing the knowledge of the information
recipient. Thus, noting details plays crucial part in gathering truthful
information for everyday life usage.
You can gather information from news reports, speeches, informative talks,
panel discussions and many other more. You can note details using the
Cornell method wherein as you listen to the informative talks you divide the
paper in two columns. The first column is used to enter key or cue words
while the second is the notes column for recording ideas and facts. The

HELP YOUR CHILD TAKE A STAND AGAINST BULLYING

by Tyler Jacobson

According to StopBullying.gov, one in four school aged children report

that they have been the victim of bullying in the past.

Our reliance on technology isn’t helping. DoSomething.org reports that

68% of teenagers admit that cyber bullying is a real problem. Our kids used
to be victims of targeting outside of the home. Now they are being tormented
in the place where they should be safe: their own home. They carry a means
of destroying their self-esteem right in their pockets in the form of a
smartphone.

The Very Real Threat of Depression and Anxiety

Our children are under a great deal of stress, more so than past
generations. Recent research has shown that their pressures are equal to
that of adults. But teenagers don’t have the brain development, self-care
knowledge, emotional maturity or experience to deal with it in nearly as
effective a way as adults do.

That may explain why depression seems to be on the rise in children and
teens. With suicide being the second leading cause of death in young people,
it is critical that we do something.

Ending Bullying from the Inside

As adults, parents, teachers and others who are involved in the lives of
our children, it is our job to help end this harmful epidemic. However, we
can’t be there 24-hours a day. We can’t protect our children from every hurt
feeling or confront bullies when they appear.

What we can do is be proactive in teaching our kids to recognize and

stand up to bullying. By raising young people to be brave and firm in the
face of this behavior, we can stop bullying as it happens.

19
Questions:
1. What is the panel discussion script all about?
a. Policies c. Bullying
b. Education d. Freedom
2. What is the ratio of bullying as reported by StopBullying.gov?
a. 1:1 c. 1:3
b. 1:2 d. 1:4
3. What kind of bullying was reported by DoSomething.org?
a. Verbal Bullying c. Cyberbullying
b. Physical Bullying d. Social Bullying
4. Where does the bullying usually occur?
a. School c. Gym
b. Home d. Cinema
5. Why do teenagers feel real threat of depression and anxiety when being
bullied?
a. because of their brain development and emotional maturity to
deal with the problem
b. because children are really weak both inside and out
c. because the society doesn’t care about the children
d. because bullying is deadly
6. Who can help children from bullying?
a. everybody involved in c. counselors only
the children’s lives d. themselves
b. nobody

What is It

The activity above is an example of scanning and skimming for

information. When we read informative texts and time is very limited for you
to gather information, you can still be effective in information gathering
through the use of scanning and skimming.
To successfully gather information, you must be skilled in reading. If it
is a news report, you can read the headline of the news. Check the title and
the main points carefully. The more you read them, the better and deeper you
understand. Understanding is a process. The following techniques in
gathering and locating required information will help you to be successful in
your reading comprehension.
20
Skimming is reading swiftly or glancing quickly through printed material in
search for the main idea. When skimming, familiarize yourself with the
general topic of your information source and while you skim try to notice the
words more stressed and clearly pronounced. This will enable you to note the
keywords which will help you gather the information. Furthermore, if you have
a sufficient background knowledge or believe you don’t need the information,
then skip it. However, pick and choose carefully what you skim and skip
While reading, ask yourself the following questions to help you decide
whether or not to skim. If you answered ‘yes' to any of these questions, then
skimming is a useful tool.
Is the material non-fiction?
Do I have a lot to read and only a small amount of time?
Do I really know something about this material?
Can any of the material be skipped?
Scanning is finding the special details to find specific facts or to answer a
question. For scanning to be successful, you need to understand how your
material is structured. Comprehend what you read so you can locate the
specific information you need. Furthermore, establishing your purpose and
locating the appropriate material before you scan is essential.

Use your hands when scanning because using your hand or finger is
extremely helpful in focusing your attention and keeping your place while
scanning a column of material. Moreover, use your peripheral vision when
scanning. When your hand moves down a list of names, you see not only the
name your finger is pointing to, but also the names above and below. Let your
eyes work for you when searching for information.

21
What’s More

Activity: Maze Test!

Good job! The skill you have developed in skimming and scanning may now
be applied in the maze test. Read the selection from beginning to end. Record
the time it took you to read the whole selection. Then go back and choose the
right word or phrase from the choices given. Work as fast as you can. Answer
on a separate paper.

What I Have Learned

Where is This?
Are you familiar with Talisay City and its famous Ruins? Read the feature article
about the city and its tourist attraction and then gather the important information
by applying the scanning and skimming steps. Be guided by the instruction below
the article.

TRAGEDY AND LOVE STORY: THE RUINS OF TALISAY CITY

by Traveling Morion

1) Romeo and Juliet, Beauty and the Beast, Jack and Rose; All the stories of these
classic love affairs is nothing compared to the story behind the beautiful and majestic
The Ruins in Talisay City or commonly known as The Taj Mahal of Negros.

2) By its name, The Ruins, you can tell that its story is a tale as old as time. A love
that still lives; a love that does not die; The Ruins has been labeled as the Taj Mahal
of Negros for the reason that the story behind why this famous structure was built is
actually identical to the story behind Taj Mahal.

4) This remarkable landmark was built by Don Mariano Ledesma

Lacson in order to honor, dedicate and remember his beautiful wife, Maria
Braga.

5) The story begins with a handsome bachelor, Don Mariano, who

came from a well-off family and has a love for seeing the world. And in an
unexpected time and place, during one of his visits in Hong Kong, the
surprising happened. It was in Hong Kong where he met the gorgeous Maria
Braga. It didn’t take long for him to show his interest towards her and
through the course of time, the two got married.

7) The couple decided to settle in one of the land owned by Don

Mariano which is in Talisay. And from then on, through time, Maria bore a
child, the two ended up having 10 children. And during the pregnancy of
Maria for their 11th child, a terrible accident had happened. Maria
accidentally slipped while she was in the bathroom, which caused her to
bleed extensively. The accident was really painful for Maria that even
traveling to the physician was close to impossible for her. So Don Mariano
decided to send one of his horsemen to fetch the physician but it would take
two days to get to the physician. During this time, Don Mariano took care of

24
his wife but even before the physician arrived, both Maria and their child
were not able to survive.

8) Devastated and torn with the death of his wife and child, Don
Mariano decided to build a house for his children who are yet married; this
is so that he would slowly let go of the grief in his heart. He told his plan to
his father-in-law, and he supported this idea by giving Don Mariano extra
funds and as well as some design plans as a guide.

9) And that is the story of this beautiful mansion that even survived
during the times of World War II, a story borne out of love and strengthening
family bonds.

10) Mr. Raymund Javellana, grandson of Mercedes (one of the daughters

of Don Mariano), developed The Ruins. The remains of the mansion is now
being recognized as one of the 12 most fascinating ruins in the world. Today,
aside from the mansion, The Ruins has a café, restaurant, mini-gold course
and stores that are frequented by many visitors and even tourists. You can
also meet Roger, the funny tour guide of The Ruins. He became famous
because of his funny lines/stints while guiding the visitors. His video while
touring a group inside the mansion went viral on YouTube, which leads him
to different TV shows and also, became his passport to Big Brother’s house
in 2015.

THE ELOQUENT LANGUAGE OF A LADY’S HANDKERCHIEF
By August Miranda

A handkerchief is a piece of cloth for wiping the face or nose or other

parts of the body. But here are some of its meanings in the art of flirtation.

• Drawing across the lips- desirous of acquaintance.

• Drawing across the eyes- I am sorry.
• Taking it by the center- you are too willing.
• Dropping- we will be friends.
• Twirling in both hands- indifference.
• Withdrawing it across the cheek- I love you.
• Drawing it through the hands- I hate you.
• Letting it rest on the right cheek- yes.
• Letting it rest on the left cheek- no.
• Twirling it in the left hand- I wish to get rid of you.
• Twirling it in the right hand- I love another.
• Drawing it across the forehead- we are watched.
• Over the shoulder- follow me.
• Opposite corners of both hands- wait for me.
• Placing it on the right ear- you have changed.
• Letting it remain on the eye- you are cruel.
• Winding around the forefinger- I am married.
• Putting it in the pocket- no more at present.

So girls, be careful in using your handkerchief. Drop your hanky when

you meet that lad or simply hold it- but beware drawing it through your
hands. As for boys, think twice before letting your handkerchief remain on
your left eye or twirl it on both hands.

Read the paragraph below and then gather the necessary accurate
information by answering the questions. Write your answer on a separate
paper.
1Few of us realize that a vast amount of information has been gathered

about our feathered friends, the birds. 2Birds are very valuable because they
destroy insects that are harmful to agriculture, because they feed on the
seeds of weeds, and because some of them eat mice on the farmers’ crops. 3A
Scarlet tanager has been known to eat six hundred thirty caterpillars in
eighteen minutes, and one nighthawk which was killed had recently eaten
sixty grasshoppers and five hundred mosquitoes. 4We can estimate the vast
quantity of insects that birds consume when we know that a pair of
chickadees were found to feed their young forty times in thirty minutes.
