Word types

A prefix is a group of letters added to the


beginning of a word.

A suffix is a group of letters added to the


end of a word.

The stem is the group of letters without


adding the prefix or suffix.

Using Prefixes
A prefix can be added to the beginning of a
stem to create a new word with a different
meaning:

The prefix re- means again


The word start means to begin
When you add re- to start you make the
word restart.
Restart means to begin again.
How does the prefix ‘un-’ change the
meaning of these words?

Friendly = unfriendly Prefixes can

opposite
Sure = unsure meaning!!
Make four words by matching each of the
prefixes to the stems:

Using Suffixes
A suffix can be added to the end of a
stem to create a new word:

Pull + ing = pulling

Cheer + ful = cheerful


Write a sentence using one of the following
stems with the suffix ‘-ful’
