(Intimate, Frozen)

B. Objectives:
1. Define Communication
2. Identify and Differentiate Frozen and Intimate Communicative Style
3. Apply the significance of Frozen and Intimate styles by understanding
its use and outstanding characteristics.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Communication is part of our daily activities. To achieve our goals, we need
to employ appropriate communication style . In the previous lesson, you have
learned some type of communicative styles for various situations. After
learning much about the formal communicative style, in particular, the formal
essay and its specific qualities / characteristics, you will now go to another
formal style which is the frozen communicative style. Moreover, you will be
oriented on another form of communicative style which is intimate
communications style.

VOCABULARY LIST
1. Communication (n) – a process by which information is exchanged between
individuals through a common system and symbols, sign or behaviour
2. Frozen Style - the most formal style of communication wherein the audience is
not allowed to raise questions to the speaker; it is a style of communication that
almost never changes. It has a fixed static language and uses long sentences
with good command of grammar.
3. Intimate – a casual type of speech that happens between close family
members, friends and couples.

Let us now study more closely the Frozen /intimate speech communication style.

Frozen Style

This is a style for declamation and for print. The listener or reader is not allowed to
question the speaker (or writer).
✓ Its extreme, impersonal style is clearly planned and marked by social
distance, which may probably cause sociocultural differences between
speaker (or writer) and listener (or reader).
✓ This style is more characteristic of writing than speech, reserved for the
most formal occasion when spoken, and then read.
✓ The writing reflects the efforts of revision. It is here that some items like
careful development of thought, logical planning, attention to stylistic
features, word appropriateness, rules of usage, and so come into full play.
✓ The style invites the reader to enter into a personal experience of creative
discovery, such as literary texts, like poetry, which he may memorize,
replay, and re-feel, and to find more profound values and meanings with
each repetition, transforming the texts into a frozen one (Broderick, 1976).
✓ As the most highly formal style, it uses the most complex grammatical
sentence structure and vocabulary known only to experts in a particular
field.

Joos (1967) in Chaer (2004:70) explains frozen style as a speech style that is
usually used in very formal situation. The characteristic of pronunciation is monotone.
It is called “frozen” because it already has a pattern and cannot be changed. In
written language, frozen style can be found in historical documents.

2
Frozen style has a long sentence than the others. The utterance of this style must
be accepted seriously by the hearer. Examples of this kind can be found in declamation
of King to the people, in the church or ceremony.
Frozen style is more elaborated than the other style. It is structured and planned.
Example of this style:
“In this grave hour, perhaps the most fateful in our history, I send to every
household of my peoples, both at home and overseas this message spoken with
the same depth of feeling for each one of you as if I were able to cross your
threshold and speak to you myself.”

Frozen style includes statutes, briefs, and appellate opinions, documents as

insurance policies, contracts, leases, and wills. So rigidly constrained is the style that it
can be considered reflective, it means that documents written in this style admit virtually
no leeway in the range of their expression, no deviation from preset norms.
Frozen speech style is usually used in formal settings. It is the most formal style of
communication wherein the audience is not allowed to raise questions to the speaker. It
is a style of communication that almost never changes. It has a fixed and static language
and uses long sentences with good command of grammar.

Example of Frozen Speech Styles

The Preamble of the Constitution
School Creeds
Marriage Ceremonies
National Pledge
National Anthem
Speech for a State Ceremony
Motto
Judicial Sentencing
Contracts
Wills

Intimate
✓ This speech style is for very close relationships like couples, family, and
best friends. It is also used for self-addressed questions or self-talk, etc.

3
Intimate speech is used in conversation between people who are very close
and know each other quite well because they have the maximum of shared
background information.
✓ It is a style among intimate members of the family or friends that do not
need a complete language with clear articulation. It is enough to use short
utterances. Another characteristic of this style is grammar unnecessarily
used here, because it can bring disorder to this intimate style.
