CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter covers the literature relevant to the

current study's premise. It also examines several studies

and resources from the Internet in order to provide the

necessary background and knowledge for the completion of

this research. It tried to compile claims from prior

studies regarding the influences of general academic

strands on college major course selection.

2.1 General Academic Strand

In June 2016, the Department of Education started

introducing senior high schools a new level of basic

education made up of grades 11 and 12, across the nation in

compliance with Republic Act 10533 of 2013, also known as

the Improved Basic Education Act of 2013.

The two more years will give students the knowledge

and abilities to better prepare them for the future,

whether it be in terms of areas of work or the development

of entrepreneurial skills, according to the Department of

Education's official website.

2.1.1 Benefits of General Academic Strand

You can select electives from the several academic strands

within this track. (Kaye Ampong & Shanya Cooray). According

to Dreece(2016), students can pursue any course in college

and choose the path you want to take from there if you

haven't decided on which field you want to pursue when you

enroll in Senior Highschool. According to Biliran (2018),

GAS is commonly the go-to strand for those who are keeping

their college options open.

As a result, General Academic Strand is the only

academic track that is flexible and allows you to examine

your preferences and skill in order to choose your college

major in the future for the reason that this strand offers

other subject from other academic strands.

2.1.2 Challenges in Choosing General Academic Strand

According to Cruz (2016), one of the drawbacks of the

general academic strand is that students who choose it will

have some difficulty catching up with the lessons because

the other students who get to select the particular track

will learn more in the college courses they will take.

2.2.1 College Major Selection

One of the biggest issues and challenges students have

during their academic careers is choosing a vocation.

According to Nyamwange (2016), it requires the interchange

of a significant number of intricately connected

components.

According to Penedilla and Rosaldo (2017), when

choosing a career, it is important to consider the

students' interests. Students must know what major to

pursue in college, a course that interests them and also

fits their abilities and skills, so that it is not

difficult for them to choose the right career path.

2.3.1 Factors Influences on College Major selection

According to Quinter et al.'s (2011), the rest of

students' life will be affected by the careers they choose.

Students' profession choices were affected by their grades,

ages, personal interests, and experiences, among other

things. These students made their career decisions based on

their educational experiences.

According to Al-Frou(2013), Parents choices in terms of

careers have a big Influence on their kids. Parents assisted

the adolescent in reflecting on career choices and

encouraged them to explore their vocational interests and

abilities as well as various occupational options. However,

some people also reported that their parents overly contro-

lled their career actions and choices (Schultheiss et al.,

2001).

One of the personality traits that significantly influences

job decision-making is interest. People who select a job

that is in line with their interests are probably happier

and more driven. Having professional intents, creating

career plans, and deciding on a career track to pursue are

all goals that are supported by interests (Lent et al.

1994).

When it comes to picking a vocation, young people are

impressionable, susceptible to peer pressure, and affected

by the media, say Kazi and akhlaq (2017). It also mentions

the importance of role model teacher in inspiring and

motivating their pupils.

Synthesis

In conclusion, the literature review on General

Academic Strand influences on choosing college major shows

that the benefits, challenges, and factors affecting

college major selection have is important to let the

students knows.The findings shows that benefits of general

academic strand which is it helps student to identify their

skills and abilities because it offers subject from other

academic track.On the other hand, there is challenges that

student can faced by choosing the General Academic strand

have some trouble catching up with the lessons because the

other student who gets to choose the particular track will

learn more in the college course they will enroll in.In

choosing College Major its factors affect the decision

making of students.The results shows that experiences,

parental influence, interest, and role of teachers

influences them in choosing their career path.

Chapter 1

Introduction

The General Academic Strand is one of the academic

track strands offered to senior high school students.

Biliran (2018), stated that General Academic Strand

is the most applicable strand for students who are

still open to their college options moreover this

academic track is for students who are still not sure about

the college courses they want because it offers other

subjects from the other senior high school strands that can

help you figure out your skills that you can apply to the

course you want.

According to Bidwell (2014) and Peano et al. (2008),

the senior SHS curriculum serves as a stepping stone for

those who choose to pursue careers in university life.

In line with this, Sarmiento, D. & R. Orale (2016),

The K-12 program is a more powerful educational approach

than the existing basic education curriculum in the

Philippines..

Their attributes, skills, interests, and knowledge

still influence their decision making.The General

Academic Strand aim to help them to discover their interest

and improve that skill.

Statement of the Problem

This research aims to address its influence on the

college major selection of Grade 11 GAS students in SRLCSI.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions:

1. How does the general academic strand become beneficial

for the GAS learners in choosing their college major

selection?

2. What are the results of the general academic strand in

their decision-making in choosing their college major?

3. What challenges do Grade 11 GAS students in SRLCSI

face in choosing a college major?

Significance of the Study

This study is about the influences of General Academic

Strand on college major selection of Grade 11 GAS students.

These have significance on students, parents, and future

researchers.

Students: Understanding the impact of their strand choice

on college major selection can be highly beneficial.

Knowing more about someone's hobbies, qualities, and

prospective career pathways they can make more informed

decisions on future educational opportunities. They will be

aware of the types of courses and extracurricular

activities that can help them build skills and experiences

relevant to their desired career path. Additionally, they

can use their knowledge of the relationship between their

strand choice and college major selection.

DEPED: To give informations and facts, that can help them

to make the general academic strand more better.

Parents: Better understanding of their childs, interest,

strengths, and potential career paths.This knowledge can

help parents guide their childs educational choices and

encourage them pursue relevant opportunities that could

benefit the future.

Future researchers: To develop their understanding on the

influences of General Academic Strand on college major

selection and helps them in conducting their own research

studies as it would serve as reference.

This study covered and dealt with the influences of

General academic strand on college major selection among

Grade 11 GAS students.

The study was focused on selected Grade 11 GAS

students in St. Rose of Lima Catholic School Inc.

Therefore, the result of this study are considered

applicable to the subject as a whole.

The study found at the influences of the General

Academic Strand on college major selection Grade 11 GAS

students.

The Grade 11 GAS students were the respondents in

conducting the study during the third grading period with

the support of interview.

Conceptual Framework

The concept of this study was focused on the influence

of General Academic Strand on the college major selection

of Grade 11 GAS students in SRLCSI.

We have used the Input-Process-Output (IPO) Model in

describing our conceptual framework.As show in the figure 1

below, Grade 11 GAS students will be asked to answer the

following: The challenges in choosing a college major

within the general academic strand, and the influences and

benefits of the general academic strand in their decision

making in choosing their college major which will be

determined through their answers in interview.The output of

our study will be able to identify the challenges,

influences and benefits of choosing General Academic Strand

in their decision-making in choosing their college major.

For clearer understanding of this research, the

following terms were given definitions to help the readers

comprehend the following terms according to the context of

the study.

General Academic Strand – This is one of the academic track

strand that do not focus on any single career path, it

covers the different subject from each of the different

academic strand.

Decision Making – This is the part of selecting and

thinking a decision from one situation, it includes

gathering informations and analyse it to have a better

decision.

College Major – A college major is something that helps

students get their dream profession in the future, it

becomes a bridge for them to reach their desired career.

Influence - This affects the one topic or scenario, that

causes some changes to that topic.
