ABSTRACT

Music is a powerful tool that can have a positive impact on students’ lives in

many ways. This study aims to identify whether music affects the students’ learning

productivity. It makes use of quantitative research, where the main methods for

gathering data are surveys and questionnaires. A descriptive method was used as

the research design. The respondents to this study are the selected 50 students from

grade 10. In the survey, male and female genders are involved in order to support

the data acquired through questionnaires. The researchers came up with the result

that music had a positive impact to the students’ learning productivity. Base on the

results, the students in grade 10 strongly agreed that they listen to music while

studying. On the other hand, they agreed that they don’t feel relaxed when they

listen to music. It is recommended that the students should listen to music, as it

helps entertain. Also, the teachers are encouraged to play a background music

during lunch or free time on the campus speaker to make the students productive
INTRODUCTION

Listening to music is an ordinary thing; it has become ingrained in

everyone's habits to accomplish their work or pass the time while doing so.

Despite this, music is referred to as an artistic medium that uses harmonic

frequencies to portray feelings. It can be heard everywhere, including on

radios, television, in malls, ads, and live performances. We experienced a

range of emotions through music, from happiness to sadness. No matter who

you are or where you come from, music is a universal language that can

speak to the soul. It can stir up feelings, bring back memories, and unite

people.

One of the difficulties students encounter in current surroundings with too

many distractions is focusing on their studies. They have developed many methods

of concentration just to deal with this. One of their strategies for escaping the

clamorous environment and distancing oneself from the attention-grabbing

distractions has been to listen to music. When studying or even reading a book,

students prefer to listen to music; they utilize it as a study partner for more attentive

focus or as a stress-relieving technique. The person's taste in music is a crucial

additional consideration. While some people think that music helps them concentrate

and focus, others find it to be more distracting. It's crucial to try out many musical

genres and discover one suits each person the best.

In India, Anthony, Priya, and Gayathri (2018) found that 40.5% of the

students listen to music while studying, and 64% of the students who lack

concentration while studying in silence tend to increase their efficiency when

studying with the music on. The survey was taken among 80 college students

and was conducted online through Survey Planet.

A study conducted in Polytechnic University of the Philippines by Blanco

and Nartea (2020) revealed that Filipino students acquired good grades, but

this cannot be directly attributed to music alone because not all students listen

to music. Results also showed no significant relationship between year level

and the impact of listening to music on academic performance, but a

significant relationship between college and the length of listening. The type of

music and GWA were also insignificant to the impact of listening to music. It is

a study conducted by D. Blanco and M. Nartea (2020).

In the study of Buladaco, Aguirre, Manito, Soliman, and Villareal (2020)

involved 30 college students from public and private schools in Panabo City.

There were 10 students from a public school and 20 students from a private

school. They found that the positive finding is relevant to justifying the current

trend of listening to music while studying as it does not pose any adverse

effects on the concentration of students.

This study is beneficial to the following:

Students. This study will encourage the students to listen to music while studying

since this will provide information about the positive effects of music to students.

Parents. They could help encourage their son or daughter to listen to music while

studying at home.
Teachers. It would be helpful if the teachers could play songs during lunch or free

time on the campus speaker to make the students productive.

Future Researchers. The study conducted will further open doors for future

researchers to refine and expand studies about the impact of music on students.

This may serve as a source of information about this.

METHOD

Research Design
The researchers utilized the descriptive research design as a quantitative

study. According to Hamilton (2015), the descriptive research design accurately and

systematically describes, observes, or validates aspects of groups collected through

quantified information, like the relationship among variables. The research design is

appropriate to determine the impact of music to students.

Research Locale

This study was conducted in one of the public secondary schools in second

congressional district with the school ID 316213.

Research Respondents
The respondents of the study were the 25 grade 9 students and 25 grade 10

students enrolled in S.Y. 2022-2023.

Research Instrument

This study used researcher-made questionnaire composed of 10 items: This

questionnaire helps collect the data on the impact of listening to music while

studying. The researchers grouped the questions in a way that would allow them to

collect the most relevant information from the respondents.

Data Gathering

The following steps were observed during the conduct of study:

First, the researchers sent a letter to the office of the School Head to conduct

the study. Second, the researchers administered the instrument to the respondents.

Then, they collected the questionnaires and tallied the responses. Lastly, data were

analysed using mean.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion
Data shows that background music has a positive impact on students’
learning productivity. This study was an important step in understanding how
music affects the student’s learning productivity. When students prefer to listen
to music while studying, it may help them focus to some level. The positive
finding is relevant to justify the current trend of listening to music while
studying as it does not pose any adverse effects on the concentration of
student. Based on the findings most of the grade 10 students answers
strongly agree and agree. This are the evidence that music can improve
focus and concentration, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve mood and
motivation, all of which can lead to better learning outcomes. It does not show
that music push the students to get a higher remarks. But it agrees that music
entertain and helps student’s to relax. We all have different objectives, thus it
depends on the learner how music influences learning.

Recommendation
The researchers of the study arrived at the following recommendations.
Students are encouraged to create a good study habits. Also, the teachers are
recommended to play songs during lunch or free time to make the students
productive. It is suggested that the parents could play song. The idea that
background music is very effective for the student to stay on-task, increase their
motivation to learn, and have positive behaviour patterns is important and great, but
to see if their test scores rise will be something of interest. Also, the teachers
