ASSIGNMENT NO.

Name: JOHN POL SEGURATE MAGLASANG Year and Section: BSA1-AB2

1. A 205 cm3 soil sample was collected three days after a drenching rain. When the soil was
assumed to be at field capacity (not saturated). The wet weight of the soil is 361.6 g and after
drying overnight in an oven the sample weighed 298.8 g.

a. Calculate the moisture content of this soil at the field capacity? (5 points)

%MC= 361.6g – 298.8g x 100

298.8g

b. If this soil retains 11 % moisture at the permanent wilting point. What is the plant available
water of this soil can store? (5 points)

The plant available water of this soil can store is least amount water may in take because its
sandy than a clay one which is above 15%.

c. What is the bulk density of this sample? (5 points)

BD= 361.6 g
205 cm3

= 1.8g/cm3

d. If the soil has a particle density of 2.65 g/cm 3. Calculate the porosity of this sample. (5
points)

F= 1- 1.8 x100
2.65
=32

2. A plowed soil was collected and weighed. The volume of the sample is 95 cm 3 and weighed 145
g. Calculate the bulk density of the sample. (5 points)

BD= 145 g
95 cm3
=1.5g/cm3

3. Another soil sample was collected from the forest with a volume of 90 cm 3 and a mass of 120 g.
What is its density? (5 points)

BD= 120 g
90 cm3
= 1.33 g/cm3
4. In the above two examples (problems 2 and 3) which soil is heavier? Which is lighter? (2 points)

Problem 2 is the heavier and problem 3 is the lighter.

5. In the above two examples (problems 2 and 3) which soil is denser? Which is less? (2 points)

Problem 3 is denser than problem 2.
