DEEP KAPAMPANGAN WORDS AND

CULTURE

 The reason Kapampangans have a reputation for being such a show-off

(mayabang) is that they have something to show off (may ipagyayabang)
—they have fine tastes, they have high standards, and they do everything
with hard work and attention to detail, from cooking to grooming to arts
and crafts and everyday tasks. And the reason for their commitment to
excellence is their diligence and their focus—traits handed down from
their ancestors—as reflected in this old Kapampangan proverb:
“ING SOBRA PIYATAYATA ING KARARASNAN NA ALA”
“ANY WORK YOU DON’T YAKE SERIOUSLY WILL AMOUNT TO
NOTHING”

 How cool it is that the Kapampangan language actually has a word for
PEACEMAKER! “Nuan la ring manipaum, uling ilang mayaus anak ning Dios”
(Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God). From the
root word paum, the ancient Kapampangan term for peace (not kapayapan). From it
comes the word pamipaum (concord, harmony, peace agreement).

 The Kapampangan virtue of generosity embodied in this old

Kapampangan proverb—sacrificing your own happiness to make
someone else happy, offering something you need to someone who needs
it more, and giving up some of your wealth and material possessions for
those who have nothing at all—because it will benefit not just them but
also you, for you will become a better person as a result.
