The General Meaning:
This poem describes the country where the poet lives which is not for the
old people but for the young generations. It is also to describe a symbolic
journey or it is a quest and an attempt to seek immortality in this world
through his journey

I
The poet describes two kinds of people in the 1st stanza "the old and the
young". The young generations are described as dying. They are dying
generations because they are caught in a net like fish. They do not know
that they will die. The poet compares between so many things to declare
his wish to go to the holly city of Byzantium. He compares between life
and death, between the old generation and the young generation, as well as
between the monuments and the works of art which remain and become
symbols of immortality with the music of the body.

II
The old man is described as a paltry thing "useless thing" in the second
stanza because he is like a scarecrow. This metaphorical image is used by
Yeats to tell us that the old man remains an old man unless he makes
something make him immortal in this life. In other words, the old men are
useless and they can be of value if they sing the song of the soul; because
the soul is immortal. Then, he says "singing school", he refers to the groups
of fish at the time of putting eggs. He wants to go to Byzantium because it
is a place where his soul can sing. The difference between the song of the
body and the song of the soul lies in studying those monuments which he
creates because these things remain for along time. For all these, the poet
sailed the seas and comes to the holly city of Byzantium.

The poet calls upon sages "wise men" after being in Byzantium. He tells
us about a belief which was common at that time. This belief says that there
is a place between hell and heaven. This place is to purify the sins of those
people who are sinners. He asks the gyre "the movement of a spin" to take
the bodies of those sinners and purify them. The gyre is a symbol of
immortality but the body is just a dying animal. He asks the sages to
consume his heart away because he wants to get rid of it. The difference
between the body and the soul is clearly reflected because the soul is
knowledgeable but the body does not know what is going on. He also asks
these sages to put him in the form of an artifice of eternity.

IV
The poet wishes to take the form of a mechanical bird because he looks for
immortality. He says "If I have the chance to be out of nature, I will take
another form. He does not want to be a natural form because what is natural
is going to die sooner or later. He decides to take a form of a non-natural
thing, of a mechanical bird. It is a golden bird. This bird is made by Grecian
Goldsmith to wake the emperor and to sing for the ladies and Lords. This
bird is not a physical thing like the body of a human being, and this means
that the bird is not going to die and decay like our bodies. This bird is out
of time, it sings a spiritual song and not a sensual song, therefore its song
will last forever. The poet wants to take the form of a mechanical bird, and
not of a natural thing; because what is natural will die and decay but what
is non-natural thing will live forever.

.1Contrast: There is a sharp contrast between so many things: between the
old people and the young generation, nature and art are contrasted with
each other because there is a problematic relationship between them ,
nature is not immortal but art is immortal. The mechanical bird is
contrasted with the natural bird which is mentioned in the 1st stanza.

when he says "An aged man is but a partly thing."

An Important Question About The Poem.
Discuss Theme of Mortality and Immortality in Sailing To Byzantium?
This theme can be expressed in Yeats' Sailing To Byzantium. Byzantium
becomes symbolic; it is an immortal place of artistic and intellectual culture
where creativity can be found. The poet wishes to be out of nature because
he wants to take the form of a mechanical bird because the mechanical bird
is immortal. The mechanical bird is out of nature and it sings a spiritual
song. Therefore, this song lasts forever. Immortality remains a quest and a
dream for Yeats. He seeks immortality through art and there are many
references for that. The mechanical bird is one of these references because
it is a symbol of immortality.
"Growing old just isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. "Sailing to Byzantium
begins as a meditation on the things which old age leaves behind: bodily
pleasure, and regeneration. As death approaches, the speaker turns towards
the possibility of rebirth as a potential solution for the trauma of watching
his own body deteriorate. The line between spiritual and physical rebirth
becomes blurred as the speaker imagines placing his soul into an art object,
something that can outlast all mortal creatures.
