NARRATIVE REPORT

On the 3Oth day of November, Megger India held a free international webinar about
challenges and solutions for transformer oil testing. The speaker of this webinar is Mr. K N Dinesh
Babu. Hands-on power system protection engineers with commissioning experience over 16 years
in HV and EHV substations. Application & design with testing & commissioning experience in
protection schemes involved in smart grid, synchro phasors, and solar power systems. Actively
contribute application literature in power systems in standard journals/conferences as a Senior IEEE
member & CIGRE.

To begin with, in this free webinar, they first discussed that Transformer oil is a refined
electrical insulating oil with outstanding electrical insulating qualities that is exceptionally stable at
high temperatures. These particular oils are commonly used in high voltage equipment such as
power transformers, high voltage capacitors, and circuit breakers. Mineral oils have traditionally
been employed as a coolant or as an electrically insulating medium. The primary issue with mineral
oil is overheating, overloading, and short circuits, which diminish the shelf life of the transformer
unit and limit its function as a dependable coolant. Furthermore, for the development of novel
insulating liquid materials, additional variables such as high electrical insulation requirements,
safety, and economic concerns must be addressed. Because of their high thermophysical and
dielectric qualities, nanofluids have become one of the market's alternatives to existing goods.

Additionally, I also learned from this webinar about the inside and outside control room of
copper saving techniques. In the inside control room, these are the things that can be done. The first
is to eliminate the control panel. The second is to reduce Inter Panel Wiring and the third one is to
reduce panel wiring. So how these three can be done, here are the solutions, by using BCU, utilize
GOOSE communication technique and remove auxiliary relays and inbuilt features of numerical
relays. While in the outside control room, reduce cables and the solution was to process the bus
system- hard fiber technology.

And lastly, the importance of transformer maintenance. Transformer oil maintenance is

critical to the reliability, performance, and lifetime of transformers. The insulating oil in your
transformer should be free of moisture, dissolved gases, and particles that collect as the oil ages.
Even fresh oils may need to be treated to reduce impurities to safe levels.
