PRINCIPLES OF

REINFORCED CONCRETE
DESIGN
(Chapter 3 – Shear Design)

-Engr. Eunice R. Berina

PROBLEM 1
A rectangular beam has the following properties:
bw = 320 mm d = 570mm stirrups diameter, dt = 10mm
fc’ = 24 Mpa fyt = 275 Mpa
Determine the required spacing vertical U-stirrup when the
required shear strength Vu is:
a) 50 kN
b) 90 kN
c) 130 kN
d) 290 kN
e) 360 kN
f) 570 kN
Use the 2010 NSCP.
PROBLEM 2
A rectangular beam has bw= 300mm and d = 580 mm. The beam is
supported to service dead load shear of 126kN and live load shear of 138
kN at critical section. Use fc’ = 21 MPa and fyt = 275 Mpa. Determine the
required spacing of 10mm vertical U-stirrups using NSCP 2015.
PROBLEM 3
Determine the spacing of vertical stirrups near the left support of
the beam loaded as shown in the figure. Given the following data:
bw = 305 mm d = 590mm stirrups diameter, dt = 10mm
fc’ = 25 Mpa fyt = 275 Mpa
Service loads:
wD = 30kN/m (including beam weight) and wL = 34kN/m
L = 3m
Use NSCP 2015.
