Course literature
The course is based on the following literature:
1. Niels Saabye Ottosen and Hans Petersson: Introduction to the Finite Element
Method, Prentice-Hall, New York 1992.
2. Some notes and journal papers about modelling of shell structures and large
deformations will be handed out during the course.
3. Niels Saabye Ottosen and Matti Ristinmaa: The Mechanics of Constitutive
Modeling, ELSEVIER Ltd, Oxford OX5 1GB UK
4. CALFEM manual.
5. Matlab and ABAQUS manuals (online).

Additional course material as ABAQUS tutorials and videos, mesh module in CALFEM
lectures, exercises and project descriptions will also be available on MyMoodle.

Course structure
The course consists of three different types of activities:
L: Lectures giving a theoretical base of the numerical modeling.
E: Exercise-tasks to practice on implementation of small FE-problems in CALFEM.
P: Project-tasks solved by the computer software CALFEM and ABAQUS.

Project work
Project 1: Stress and stability analysis of thin-walled steel plate.
Project 2: Plasticity analysis of a steel flange.

The project work will be made in groups of two students. Attendances to lectures where
the projects are introduced are compulsory. The written project reports must be delivered
for grading before specified deadlines in the course program. The report shall include: a
short introduction of the problem, basic theory used in the project, a short description of
the numerical implementation, the main results obtained and interesting observations.

Examination

4 (5)
The grading of the course is based on reports handed in for the two above projects.
The weights of the assignments: weights
Project 1 60%
Project 2 40%
To pass the course, the two written project reports must be approved. To be approved on
the projects, you need to have at least grade 50% for each of the project.
