MYP M20 Design

Subject group and discipline: Design (design, digital design, product design) Unit duration: about 20 hours
Unit title: “You are never too small to make a difference”*

Global context: Globalization and sustainability

Key concept: Communities
Related concept: Markets and trends
Statement of inquiry: Changing consumer behaviour at local community level is key to creating a global sustainable world.
Inquiry questions such as these should be developed by teachers and students:
Factual: What are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)/Global Goals?
What resources are wasted by my community?
What is the impact of our communities’ waste?
Conceptual: How can an individual’s waste production impact others?
What is my role in achieving SDGs?
Debatable: Is it my responsibility to save the world?

Summative assessment
The student produces an ePortfolio that follows the design cycle to develop a solution (or range of solutions), which targets local/community waste.

Students must select one of the following audiences/clients:

 their school community
 their family
 community organizations: food banks/soup kitchens, community plots/gardens, or community shelters/centres.

Suggested solutions may be, but are not limited to, the following ideas:
 Recipes made from left overs
 App for waste donation
 Multi-media campaign around recycling for local use
 Textile product made from waste
 Prototype smart composting containers
 Electronics made from reclaimed parts
 Products to raise awareness of the destination of our waste
MYP M20 Design

 Digital gamification solution to encourage reduction of food and water waste

 Edible cutlery/crockery

Please note:
 the working title for this unit is a quote from Greta Thunberg’s speech to the United Nations COP24 Climate Change Conference, 4 December
2018 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFkQSGyeCWg)
 waste donation could include, but is not limited to: unwanted furniture, clothes, broken toys, broken electrical goods.

Objectives: All strands of all objectives (A, B, C and D)

Summative assessment tasks, including assessment criteria: Evidence of summative assessment task strands for eAssessment:
Criterion A Within Criterion A the student selects a target audience/client from the
options above and will analyse and inquire into:
I. Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a
specified client/target audience.  the need for a solution that targets local/community waste

IV. Develop a detailed design brief, which summarizes the analysis of
relevant research.

Criterion B Within Criterion B the student provides evidence of:

I. Develop design specifications, which clearly states the success  a detailed design specification
criteria for the design of a solution.  a range of ideas or designs that consider the specifications
II. Develop a range of feasible design ideas, which can be correctly (examples of planning these solutions may include annotated
