MYP Design N19

Subject group and discipline: Design (design, digital design, product design) Unit duration: about 20 hours
Unit title: Design thinking to assist the vulnerable

Global context: Scientific and technical innovation

Key concept: Development
Related concept: Perspective
Statement of inquiry: Taking on client perspective leads to designing safe solutions
Inquiry questions such as these should be developed by teachers and students:
Factual: What makes us feel safe?
What risks do my target client/audience face?
What about their situation might make my target client/audience feel unsafe?
Conceptual: How can designers understand the needs of a client they cannot communicate with?
How can understanding the way our client will interact with the solution help us make better design choices?
Debatable: Do designers create better safety innovations than scientists?

Summative assessment
The student produces an ePortfolio that follows the design cycle to develop a solution (or range of solutions) which enables and/or improves safety for
their target audience’s situation.

Students must target one of the following audiences/clients:

 Homeless or displaced people
 Rescue workers
 People with physical or mental changes which have limited their movement

Suggested solutions may be, but are not limited to, the following ideas:
 Evacuation or rescue prototype
 Portable filter for liquid or air
 Assistive cane or device
 App or program to send regular safety tips for a situation
 Tracking device
MYP Design N19

 High nutrition long shelf life emergency food

 Light-weight emergency garment

Please note:
 No specific exploration is mandated for this unit
 Issues in relation to safety could include, but are not limited to: natural disasters, manmade disasters, limiting physical or mental changes,
seasonal concerns or restrictions, malnutrition
 Homeless or displaced people could include as a result of manmade or natural disasters; rescue workers could include fireman, lifeguards,
medical, police, paramedics; and people with physical or mental changes that have limited their movement could include dementia sufferers,
amputees, para-sportsmen/women
 Stakeholder perspectives may be primary or secondary observations

Objectives: All strands of all objectives (A, B, C and D)

Summative assessment tasks, including assessment criteria: Evidence of summative assessment task strands for eAssessment:
Criterion A Within Criterion A the student selects a target audience/client from the
i. explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a options above and will analyse and inquire into:

iii. analyse a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the  a design brief which reflects the analysis of their research with
problem reference to the global context and statement of inquiry.
iv. develop a detailed design brief, which summarizes the analysis of
relevant research.

Criterion B Within Criterion B the student provides evidence of:

i. develop design specifications, which clearly states the success  a detailed design specification
criteria for the design of a solution  a range of ideas or designs that consider the specifications
ii. develop a range of feasible design ideas, which can be correctly (examples of planning these solutions may include annotated
interpreted by others sketches/storyboards, accurate drawings/diagrams, aesthetic
iii. present the chosen design and justify its selection considerations)

Criterion C Within Criterion C the student produces evidence of:
i. construct a logical plan, which describes the efficient use of time  time limitations, resources and details of the necessary skills
and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create required to create the solution.
the solution  appropriate technical skills*
ii. demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the solution  development process and presentation of the final product*
iii. follow the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended  justification of changes made.
iv. fully justify changes made to the chosen design and plan when
making the solution *Please note URLs must not be submitted. Evidence of technical skills and of
the development of the solution will be one or more of the following:
 Audio
 Photographic (including screenshots)
 Video (including screencasts)
 Written

Criterion D Within Criterion D the student will:

i. design detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate  design authentic tests for the solution
