FIRE EQUIPMENT INSPECTOR

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY ACT, 85 OF 1993

CONSTRUCTION REGULATIONS 29

CR 29 A contractor must, in addition to compliance with the Environmental

Regulations for Workplace, 1987, ensure that –
CR 29(g) suitable and sufficient fire extinguishing is placed at strategic locations
or as maybe recommended by the Fire Chief or local authority
concerned, and such equipment is maintained in a good working order;
CR 29(h) the fire equipment contemplated in paragraph (g) is inspected by a
competent person, who has been appointed in writing for that purpose,
in the manner indicated by the manufacturer thereof.

Duties and Responsibilities

In terms of this appointment you are required to specifically ensure that all firefighting
equipment on the below mentioned premises is inspected monthly and the results of
such inspection are recorded in a register which must be available for inspection at all
times. In this regards you must ensure, amongst others, the following:-
1. The correct type of fire fighting equipment has been provided, in strategic
positions, in relation to identified hazards;
2. That such fire fighting equipment remains unobstructed, and in good
working order at all times;
3. That the positions of fire equipment is suitably indicated by means of
symbolic signs and that such signage remains in a good, clean condition;
4. That all emergency escape routes are signposted, where necessary,
and such routes remain unobstructed at all times.
