HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD IN MATH?

Quite often children come home and straight away turn on the TV. However if a
parent provides a place and a time for learning or for going over homework, they
will be surprised to find that their child will quickly adapt to the routine and
actually look forward each day to the experience.

HOW CAN I MOTIVATE MY CHILD?

By becoming enthusiastic and involved, you are sending your child a positive
message about learning. For children it is more fun to do an activity when the
family are taking an interest in progress.

HOW CAN I MAKE THE BEST USE OF THIS BOOK?

Children are naturally inquisitive and like to learn. Activities that are entertaining
and enjoyable make learning fun. Being around enthusiastic role models also means
that the child will become positive and enthusiastic about leaning. This is the
atmosphere that the school and the home should try and produce. The content of
this book is progressive and contains both basic skills and new concepts that are
reinforced and built on by repetition. To help learning, the same type of question is
asked in a variety of different ways and contexts. The book is best used at regular
intervals during the week. Because it is designed to complement the National
Mathematics Curriculum, you will be reinforcing what has been learnt at school or
introducing what will be taught in later weeks.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD DOES NOT GET THE ANSWERS CORRECT?

Children learn at different rates. The important thing is to remain positive and
praise what has been done. Use other examples and talk about what has gone
wrong. Rub out their answers then let them try that page again. Practice and
repetition will lead to increased confidence in math.

HOW LONG SHOULD MY CHILD SPEND ON MATHEMATICS?

If a child works for 20 minutes during each week day, they are completing 100
minutes extra work per week and over 80 hours per year. This is extra to their
regular school lessons and is setting a pattern for later years. Most children will
initially need to be encouraged to start an activity, however do not force them.
There will be days when other activities take precedence. Reading through and
explain any instructions and reward their efforts with more encouragement. Above
all, instill an enjoyment of math and its challenges. Success and confidence in any
subject inevitably lead to an enjoyment of learning. We hope that you and your
child have fun as they learn with the Mighty Math series. At Mahobe, we certainly
had fun putting it all together for you and enjoy your letters of praise!
