My family holiday by Ali Hossam

A
Last year, I went on a week-long activity holiday in Slovenia with my mum and
younger brother Samir. I was astonished Mum booked it – it didn’t seem like
something that would appeal to her. Looking back, I’m convinced she wanted to
make sure there was plenty to keep us both busy. We flew from England, and
from the airport it was a short journey to the capital, Ljubljana. It turned out
Slovenia was much smaller than I’d thought, and the boring coach journey I was
sure was ahead of us never happened. In fact, I discovered that travelling for
more than an hour would take us into another country!

B
After we unpacked, we couldn’t wait to explore the historical part of the city. It was
mostly for pedestrians, with tiny streets we got really lost in. But luckily that meant
we got to discover a fantastic ice-cream shop. We spent ages there deciding on
flavours – everything sounded delicious! All apart from a disgusting sour cherry
one Samir ordered, although apparently he liked it! That first evening, we had a
meal in the hotel with the other families booked on the same holiday. It was a real
shame that there weren’t any kids our age; fortunately, Samir and I get on pretty
well most of the time.

C
After dinner, we got the week’s plan. Our first adventure was river-rafting –
travelling down a river by boat. We were warned it’d be fast, but that didn’t worry
me: quite the opposite – I couldn’t wait. There were also windsurfing and sailing
activities throughout the week. One thing I was determined to do was to push
Samir into the water as often as possible. I did this because, despite being
younger, he’s taller than me, which he refuses to let me forget! It was a great way
to remind him that actually I’m the oldest.

D
On the first morning, Mum didn’t set her alarm, so although we made it in time, we
were last onto the bus! After a short drive, we arrived at the river, and got into the
boats. The guides certainly weren’t lying about the river speed! My mum was
incredible though – she’s not confident around water, but you wouldn’t know it.
That was the first of many exciting adventures, and I realised it was the only
holiday where I haven’t wanted to constantly check my phone. I was amazed how
little that bothered me!

Part 6
Questions 37–42
Read the text and questions below.
For each question, circle the correct letter: A, B, C or D.

The dogs that are helping forests to grow again

A few years ago, fires in the El Maule region of central Chile destroyed thousands of square
kilometres of forest. Francisca and Constanza Torres are sisters who have lived in the area all their
lives. Constanza says, ‘This was very different when we were young because there was a lot of
forest. It was full of wildlife, and now there’s nothing left.’
Francisca and Constanza looked at the bare land and had an idea. They realised that their three
dogs, called border collies, could help to plant new trees. Border collies love running, and because
farmers have used them to move sheep around since the 1800s, they don’t try to catch wild creatures
if their owners tell them not to. The sisters designed special backpacks for their dogs, to hold seeds –
the tiny things that plants grow from. The backpacks have small holes so seeds fall out as the dogs
run around the forests. These grow into new trees. The sisters buy the seeds themselves, but now
need people to send money for more.
Of course, humans could also drop seeds in the forests, but dogs are better at it. They happily run
about 25km each day, depending on how steep the hills are, whereas most people could only do
around 10km. At the moment, robot technology isn’t advanced enough to spread seeds without
harming other plants. This isn’t an issue for dogs. Using remote-controlled aircraft called drones
would disturb wildlife with the noise they make.
Francisca and Constanza have already taken their dogs to fifteen different forests. They can’t do all
the work alone, which is why they’re talking to journalists. They know readers are often keen to get
involved after hearing someone’s story. And they have some success to share, as recently they’ve
noticed small trees and animals when they return to plant more seeds. This makes them feel positive
about what they’re trying to achieve. They’re trying new things too, such as giving small trees to
schools so that students can learn about nature in their science classes. Their plan is so good that
people from California and Australia, places which have also had bad forest fires, have been in
contact. If you’d like to find out how you can help, search summerbordercollie.com.

37 In the first paragraph, we find out

A why the forest was a good place for animals to live.
B why people don’t care about the forest anymore.
C how the forest has changed since the fires.
D how the forest fires in Chile started.
[1]

38 The writer explains that the type of dogs Francisca and Constanza own
A have worked in forests for a long time.
B are good at following instructions.
C were traditionally used for hunting.
D can carry more than other dogs.

11

39 Why does the writer say it is good to use dogs to help plant trees?
A They cause less damage to the environment than machines.
B They can get to areas of the forest that humans cannot reach.
C They do not get bored going to the same locations.
D They are reasonably inexpensive to care for.
[1]

40 Why are Francisca and Constanza hopeful about the future?

A They have seen signs that the forest is growing again.
B They are teaching school children to look after forests.
C They are receiving helpful advice from people around the world.
D They have noticed that journalists are interested in their story.
[1]

41 What is the writer doing with this text?

A encouraging people to go out into the countryside
B recommending getting a particular type of dog
C warning about the dangers of forest fires
D persuading people to support a project

Moving to a new town

A Victoria
As soon as my parents found a flat they liked in the town we were moving to, we
started going to see schools. The one I’m at was our first choice. The only thing it
doesn’t have, which my old school did, is an after-school drama club. I’m quite
upset about that. The other thing that’s not great is my bedroom, but maybe it just
needs decorating. The people next door are nice, though. The day after we
moved in, the girls from the family invited me to go skateboarding with them and
their mates. I go out with them a lot now and we always have fun.

B Kamal
In some ways, the place we live in now is better – we didn’t have a sports centre
or a cinema nearby until we moved. I miss my friends, though. That’s why I go
back and hang out with them at weekends sometimes. Luckily, it’s only an hour
on the train. My new school’s not bad. I walk there, and it takes about the same
amount of time as the journey to my old school used to take. I think I just need to
find some people who share my interests. Doing hobbies with friends is more fun
than doing them alone.

C Amber
This town’s a lot smaller than the one we lived in before, so it’s not easy to find
stuff to do, but I’ve started horse riding. I’ve never had so much fresh air in my
life! It’s fun, and I’d definitely recommend taking up an activity you haven’t done
before if you want to meet new people. That's how I got to know my new best
mate. I like our new flat, but if my parents had let me choose a place to live, I
probably would’ve chosen one nearer to my school. My old school was only a few
minutes’ walk away. Now it takes ages to get there!

D Zhang
When my parents decided to move and were looking for a flat, I went with them
and we made the decision together. They wanted to know about local schools
and the neighbours, but I was more interested in making sure I got a better room
than the one I used to have. The one I’ve got now’s fantastic, so the move was
definitely a good idea! I still talk to friends from my old school, but I haven’t met
up with them. We’re too far away now. Luckily, I’ve made friends at my new
school and I’m doing well there.

Part 6
Questions 37–42
Read the text and questions below.
For each question, circle the correct letter: A, B, C or D.

Young designer
17-year-old Martha Kohler tells us about designing and knitting jumpers.
I learned to knit when I was ten, during a visit to my aunt’s. I was wondering what to get my mum for
her birthday and my aunt suggested I make something. It was a cold winter, and we thought she’d
appreciate a wool scarf. We got a book and started learning to knit together. Sadly, my aunt gave up
pretty quickly, but I loved it and finished the scarf, and I’ve been knitting ever since!
Then, last year, a friend and I read about a competition to design a jumper that was organised by a
company called 21-Century Knits. The best jumper would be sold on the company’s website! That
was amazing, but it was the fact that the judges were all designers I admired that persuaded me to
enter. I’d be able to meet them and pick up some valuable tips! I knew the competition wouldn’t be
easy, as I’d probably be rather inexperienced compared to other people – but I sat down to think of
ideas.
The company’s website had a beautiful, exclusive clothing range, but the competition was for a
jumper that wouldn’t cost a lot. I spent ages on my design – I worked hard, using a mix of light and
dark blue wool, and it had unusual sleeves. The jumper was definitely something I’d want if I saw it in
a shop – which was what I was aiming for. So I submitted my entry, and after a couple of weeks, I
heard I’d won!
I’ll never forget the feeling when, just a few months later, my jumper was featured on the website.
Naturally, I hoped to sell hundreds, and although that didn’t happen, the company were happy
anyway. I think the positive comments sent in by shoppers must’ve helped because they’ve asked me
to design again for them! In fact, I’ve started getting some ideas ready. The company wrote
something about me on the site for customers to read, which was nice, although it was a shock to see
my picture there too. But knowing that my story could encourage others to take up knitting is fantastic.
I’m certainly glad I did – it’s changed my life!
