“MADAM GEETA RANI”

A FILM REVIEW
Final Term - Activity 1

I. Introduction

The movie “Madam Geeta Rani” is a movie that talks about the story of a
public school teacher named Geeta Rani, she is a retired high ranking police army
in India but regardless of the opportunities that is offered to her in the service, she
gave up her career as a police army and chose to become a school principal in a
small rural place and the moment she stepped into the place, the conditions won’t
align in her favor. The school is completely a mess, garbage's are seen
everywhere, students are fighting with each other in the name of their religion
and a lot has their own vices.
Moreover, the teachers are not interested in teaching their students and the
government are all corrupt. Also, most of the residents in the place believes that
accepting bribe isn’t a crime and teachers accepts salary without doing anything
but there is still this one teacher who still teaches effectively which inspires her to
do things in the right way. It is also a story of a teacher who is implementing many
plans to redesign an undisciplined school. Although she faces many challenges a
long the way, she fought for herself alone. Looking fierce while fighting enemies
and one good thing about her is that, she has such a beautiful personality but
sensitive sometimes and she had a beautiful relationship with her father.
The movie also portrays the importance of learning other languages, right to
education, the importance of your native language and the extracurricular
activities. As she had a strict actions on the school, her relationship with the other
teachers became miserable. However, because of Geeta Rani, there are many
changes happened to the school where she implemented a new set of rules. The
movie makes us to be in the shoes of the characters where they perfectly portrays
their role and it is a concept that is worth to watch.

II. Characters of the Story

1. Geeta Rani - the main character of the movie who is the headmistress of
the school. She is a former Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army who became a
Principal of the Government school. She is not perfect yet she is a brave woman
who changed a school. She has a powerful character. She is righteous, upright,
professional, disciplined and a passionate teacher.
2. Rama Lingam - he is a one such biggie in the area who runs a private
school and he fears that the government school might turn a competition to him.
3. Geeta Rani’s Father - a gentleman who appears to be Geeta Rani’s
inspiration. A man who defends her daughter’s rightful acts towards those people
who ridiculed her ways of reforming the school.
4. Susheela - a teacher in the government school who teaches for 33 years.
She was offered for a promotion but declined the opportunity and continued to
teach in the government school. She was also a mother of Geeta Rani’s lover.
5. Mr. Harish - he is a corrupt vice principal of the school. He accepts brobes
from admitting students in the school. He hated Geeta Rani for being upright and
devised a plan to suspend her from the position.
6. Kathir - a young student who is a 2nd standard of study. He was first
hesitant to approach Geeta Rani but later on admired her. He offered Geeta Rani
some sweets and asked her hand for marriage.

III. Summary

The movie begins with a specific scenes where the children are taken to
school by riding a trucks and pays an overpriced fare at the city of Puthur. On the
other hand, Geeta Rani is on her way to this place where it could be considered a
chaotic city, a place of noise, a place where students fistfights for there different
religions.
She then arrived to the place witnessing the school’s premises as she
expected the worst but it was a devastating place to be considered as a school.
She witnessed a school where students’ use cigarettes and it can be purchased
within the school premises and surrounded by garbage. She also witnessed how
the teachers manage their classes, unethical, unprofessional and a
disappointment. She gathered the students, staffs, personnel of the school for an
assembly. She doesn’t hesitate to set out rules that the students must follow such
as class time, wearing of uniforms, punctuality of teachers but she then gained
enemies within the faculty, particularly the vice principal of the school who
threatened her authority.
Geeta Rani then initiated cleaning the school, taking the bad influences out
and sets a fresh and inclusive atmosphere for the students. She sets a new routine
of the school’s morning assembly and opened a “Sunday Box” for the school to
cater the multiple intelligence of the students on weekends such as singing,
dancing, writing and more to maximize their forte. She became the subject of
admiration and inspiration for the students as she ate lunch with them, shared
food and became friends with her students.
The students’ parents attention are called for a meeting for the first time then
asked what has caused for the school to be stagnant when it comes to instruction
and it’s holistic development. They pointed their fingers towards several
educational institutes and the lack of actions from the government, she then
questioned their role, responsibility and competency as parents. Then, it led to the
reconstruction of the facility of the school and improving the teaching and learning
setting for the students and teachers. She observes the teachers performance
inside the classroom and seated in classes and discovered that there are areas of
instruction that needs for improvement.
Despite these changes in the school, she still cannot please everyone. She
faced a lot of challenges, she was sabotaged and attempted to assault her but she
confidently faced it all. She faced all these adversities in her profession with honor
as she respects and admire her father. Unfortunately, her father dies in his sleep
bidding his goodbye to her brave daughter.
After that, it was then revealed that Geeta Rani had a lover who turns out to
be the deceased son of the longest teaching instructor of the school, who is
Susheela. They reconciled as a mother grieving for her child and a lover who logs
for the love of her life. She was then arrested by upgrading the slow learners to
ninth standard and allowed them to take the exam. She was imprisoned but the
people didn’t take it lightly and protested and requested the police to release her.
They were waiting for the announcement of the result of the exam and it was
later announced that the students she upgraded passed the exam and proved her
prudence of allowing the learners to improve. The movie ended up with Geeta
Rani speaking in front of the students and faculty and declared an inspirational
talk that says people who protest and fight against injustice are the one who
creates history.

IV. Conclusion

I think the director somehow delivered the purpose of the movie. The movie
received a favorable reviews when it first came out. It successfully portrayed the
issues found within the educational system of India. Educators are inspired and
satisfied with how the movie goes out the social issues that are really happening
in real life.
The movie also became a helpful source of providing a deeper understanding
of the subject Educ 64 - The Teacher and the School Curriculum as it shows the
teacher as an innovator, initiator and every characteristics of a teacher has. I can
consider this movie as a successful movie as it evokes emotions and actions within
the viewers which it it the main purpose of the movie. In addition, the movie is
about how the teachers improved themselves. Furthermore, I was amazed by
Geeta Rani’s “3 Questions” to determine what’s lacking, what are the actions that
will be needing to do and how to implement a new plan for a more comprehensive
and holistic education.

V. Moral Lesson/s Learned

The Right to Education, as we all know education is made for everyone.

Despite of what your religion is, gender, class, race or other demographic profiles
can hinder the boundary and categorize the community by discerning who has the
right and who has not..
The Teachers are the implementer of change. Teachers are the
facilitators of learning and we provide guidance to our students as to what are the
necessary skills, knowledge and concepts they must consider in order to survive
the challenge of the concrete world. With this, we must act like Geeta Rani to
improve the competencies to maximize what our students learn towards a better
future.
Resilience and Dedication, Geeta Rani gave her unwavering commitment
to her students teaches us the value of dedication in the face of adversity.
